Apple iPhone 5 first impressions device, photo, and screenshot gallery

Summary: The Apple iPhone 5 is an amazing piece of hardware and also takes great photos. It also comes with the new iOS 6 mobile operating system, as shown in this gallery.

The iPhone 5 comes in a compact and attractive retail box. I ordered the black one since I thought the black metal looked attractive online.

"I can't get Passbook to do anything for me yet."

Ditto. The number of supported stores is very extremely limited.

    • The difference with Apple is that it's approach is uniform and platform ...

... wide, so we can expect Passbook will be rich very soon -- unlike Wallet thing from Google.

      • You keep excusing Apple for "one day in the future"

while others are there today, in the here and now.

I have a question - why do you praise Apple for doing things that you deride others for doing?

It doesn't make any sense. It just sounds like you're making excuses for Apple, Dennis.

        • Which "things" and which "others"?

No one is doing Passbook besides Apple. And of course there is drastic difference between this Apple's effort and Wallet-thing, which is hopeless for more than a year already.

        • On break from Geek Squad?

Take your unqualified butt off these boards.

      • Another crippled closed piece of iCrap software

Why not include NFC which is an open standard to do the same kinds of things as Passbook?
        laequis
        • Because NFC has been shown to have security issues?

It's not a matter of if, but when, the bad people will choose to exploit it.

Your apologetics just gets more old and stale every time you speak!

    • American Airlines and United Airlines

      Already using passport.

On the store side: Target and Walgreens

Entertainment: Fandango, MLB, Ticketmaster (to name a few)

I can see the usefulness. The success will depend on how many companies will sign up to it.

    • Welcome to the US Cell phone reality

We're very far behind the rest of the world with Passport and Wallet apps. It will evolve over time. Have a look at what Japan has been doing with these kinds of apps and it will give you an idea of where this is going.
I'm disappointed with both right now but looking forward to when this type of app works with all.

  • I'm not sure I get it...

Unless you found Infinity Blade particularly laggy on a 4 or 4S - which it's not - then you really don't need the A6. Switching to anodised allot back looks MUCH better... but we'll see how durable tat is in a month or so (my guess, not very). The phone's proportions are all wrong though... it's a super unattractive candybar shape - Yuk. I could have done with being a bit wider. I might be in the minority here, but I find my 4S to be too narrow to hold comfortably in my hand... and making it taler seems crazy pointless. And after that, what else is there about the iPhone 5 that makes it "great"?

I mean, absolutely EVERYTHING else about this handset is to do with iOS6, and my 4S updated perfectly. IOS Maps, Panorama photos, updated Siri, Passbook, updated Messages... everything. All handed to me for free as a software update. So why, exactly, is this phone worth queueing up for?

My carrier upgraded me from the 4 to the 4S for free (without contract extension)... and I wasn't in ANY rush to upgrade my 4, as the 4S seemed a total "meh" upgrade. The 5, sorry iFans, is even less amazing as an upgrade choice.

Okay. Now that eleventy-bajillion people have bought the iPhone and posted unboxing videos, photo galleries, and wanky opinion pieces and reviews, can we PLEASE leave this gadget alone and get some variety in the tech news now.. Please!

    • I'd be interested to see where it goes

"Unless you found Infinity Blade particularly laggy on a 4 or 4S - which it's not - then you really don't need the A6."

I'd be interested to see where gaming goes with more powerful chips. There's still a lot of room for improvement.

"I might be in the minority here, but I find my 4S to be too narrow to hold comfortably in my hand... "

Problem is, there is no "right size" for hands. Different people have different size hands. That's just a fact. The best you can really do is to take an average.

It's okay not to get the iPhone 5 right away. In fact, I imagine there's a lot of people who won't. But that doesn't really mean that Apple should stop making new iPhones.

    • Agreed: let's have some news about something completely different!

Personally, I don't understand why everyone is having a wobbly about the iPhone 5. It's a decent handset but please, let's talk about something else for awhile.

      • Yes, Please

As expected the I-Phone 5 looks nice but its a minimal upgrade to say the least. The Lumia 920, Windows Phone 8x and Samsung Ativ look like great phones too.

      • Nothing else to talk about

There's nothing else to talk about is there? Oh yeah the iPad Mini!

  • What’s Your Vote For The Most Beautiful Phone Ever?

I think hands down the most beautiful phone I’ve ever seen is the Nokia N9.

Number 2 I think would have to be the Galaxy Nexus. Switched off, you can't even tell where the screen ends and the bezel begins.
    ldo17
    • OMG

of course you like the Nokia N9< its an ipod nano rip off !!!

    • There is no "Most Beautiful Smartphone Ever"

Just that some are more elegant than others and some, quite honestly, look like toys. To me, plastic means cheap and flimsy; easy to break. Guess where that leaves the rest.

    • Hmm...

I thought the old 3g/3gs were attractive to. I must say that my polycarbonate unibody one X in white puts my wifes iPhone 4 in white to shame.

the N9 is beautiful but I honestly think the new iPhone is the prettiest phone on the market, when the screen is off (on the black one) it looks like there isnt one at all and its like a finely chiseled piece of glass, and I have the galaxy S3 but it is a bit over rated.
