Assassin's Creed movie to star Michael Fassbender

X-Men, Inglourious Basterds actor will star in and co-produce big-screen adaptation of Ubisoft action franchise; Ubisoft Motion Pictures developing film independently.

The upcoming Assassin's Creed movie will star X-Men: First Class and Inglourious Basterds leading man Michael Fassbender, Variety reports today. Not only will Fassbender play the leading role in the film, but he will also co-produce it.

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice" to play the franchise's iconic hero, said Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet.

Last year, Sony and Ubisoft were in negotiations to develop multiple Assassin's Creed movies. According to Variety's report today, these talks have been put on hold, with Ubisoft now planning to develop the first film independently. This move would give the studio greater creative control, unlike the scenario with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which was adapted by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer.

Variety points out that Sony could still end up distributing the Assassin's Creed movies, but Ubisoft Motion Pictures will seek a writer and a director before negotiations move forward with Sony. Baronnet told the site that Ubisoft Motion Pictures seeks to "limit its risk investment" with the Assassin's Creed films by tapping its in-house studios, like Hybride Technologies, to develop the visual effects.

In addition to Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft is spinning its Raving Rabbids franchise into an animated television series for Nickelodeon and has plans to make movies based on its Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon games.

The latest game in the Assassin's Creed franchise is Assassin's Creed III, which is set during the Revolutionary War and is due out on October 30 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more on that title, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

WTF? No. Just no. A movie adaptation could be a bit hit or miss, but I'd give it a shot anyway. But, while Fassbender might have done some decent movies and I enjoy his acting, he isn't Desmond. Desmond is about as far from Fassbender as you can get, and while I usually don't get into the 'whitewashing' argument, in the case of this movie I think Desmond's ethnicity is important. Not even gonna consider watching this, gonna stick with the games thanks.

scndrl ...Have you SEEN Prometheus? It's ridiculously close to a character like Desmond. Don't be stupid. Fassbender is so incredibly colorful in his acting career, I have no doubt he alone could carry the film far (even with bad producing). I'm no fanboy, but he definitely is fit for a serious-confused/confident-focused dual-role between past and present character.

I think he's a great actor. With the right script and director this could shape into a decent video game film adaptation... Then again this is a video game film adaptation so it may suck. lol either way I'm hoping for the best because Assassins Creed is an awesome IP

I still think this is a bad idea.  You know what won't surprise me:

"Desmond is valuable because of his high concentration of First Civilization DNA."

"Oh really, how can we be certain?"

"It's in his midi-chlorian count."

As per Deus Ex.  Use the original game's plot, or epic fail.

Another attempt to rake in cash with possibly watered-down content. There's seriously " very rare-to-no creativity in the IP industry". Lets hope this isn't a cheesy-fied, "infused with unnecessary humor", and extremely linear attempt to transition a very good video game over to the big screens.

In my opinion, this movie might be another bad hollywood movie adaption of a game.

Whilst the original AC had a good plot I, for one, am hoping that this will be the tales of Ezio Audotore di Firenze. I couldn't put AC2 down when I purchased it and feel that the stories of the master assassin of his age would be the best route to go down. I don't want to see too much of Desmond's story although, let's face it, it has to be part of the story. I want to see the battle between the Templars and the Assassins struck out on screen for me and not just some nonsense romance which Hollywood always seems to go down. Ezio was always the ladies man and there should be a love interest in the film, it will give depth to the character but please don't mess it up for us. I would loathe to see critics defining this as a 'schoolboy game turned into woefully inept conversion to film'. Oh and please make it 3D if it's any good, I need more 3D movies for adults in my collection!

Unfortunately, Fassbender looks like an assassin but nothing like Desmond, Altair, or Ezio.

Im gonna play a Role as an Assassin too on NOVEMBER 15 2012 :)

I'd like to see the plot for the movie. AC has an interesting plot. Not sure how they're going to connect this movie to the game

CalamityKate 89 pts

I'm glad to see comments clarifying which character he'll be playing.  To say that the person playing Desmond will be "starring" is a either a little bit of an overstatement, as Desmond is a supporting character to Alistair/Ezio in the games.

That is, unless they beef up Desmond's part of the story quite a bit and downplay Ezio's.  Which is assuming they skip over Alistair and go straight to Ezio, which is hardly a safe assumption.

A logical way to come at the project would be to pace it as a trilogy, with the first movie covering the events of the first game, the second Ezio's story, compressing the Animus sequences from Ezio's trilogy into a single story, and the third covering the events from AC3 and any sequels it might get.

They'd also need to pace revelations regarding the modern role of the templars and assassins a bit differently and the templars plans, with more coming out in the first movie, if they chose to go this route, than occurs in AC.

CalamityKate Altair, not Alistair. Rather different characters. :P

CalamityKate Alistair? I take it you like Dragon Age.

Good point.  I did mean Altair.  Thanks for the correction.

Hope Up for this movie,   dont let Sony do anything to it, leave them out! Price of Persia was a lame movie cause it had No relation whatsoever to its original script.

U might think why do you need to wright a script of a movie based on the game? I mean, just follow the games storyline, its already there! No need to get creative or something, dont try to invent warm water, its already there...

I can see him playing this role.

From thehollywoodreporter.com

Fassbender will play Desmond Miles, a bartender who is a descendant of several lines of prominent assassins. The story weaves between present day and ancient times as Miles squares off with the Knights Templar."

samantha_sneez 158 pts

@spoonybard-hahs That's a cute kitty

spoonybard-hahs 244 pts

Fassbender will be playing Desmond. As far as anyone knows, Altair could still be played by another actor. Assuming of course they aren't skipping AC1 and going straight for AC2 - BH for Ezio. I'll be honest, I believe Fassbender should just be given every award every year weather he worked or not. However I never pictured him playing a multi-ethinic twenty-something and a thirty-something Middle-Eastern man.

Then again, he is Michael Fassbender.

Printul_Noptii 126 pts

He is a very good actor :D He should have gotten the oscar for Shame. Unfortunately Hollywood can't handle NC-17 movies lol

it wont work with todays money men ruining everything, it can only work as a tv series imo, the story is far too big for one made for chavs movie. An animated movie or series would be preferable imo

I STILL think making an Assassin's Creed movie is a bad idea... I let PoP slide for me because it's really simplistic and magical, yet somehow Disney found a way to screw with us anyway.

Assassin's Creed is a story about a conspiracy that hides in our everyday life, a secret battle waging for centuries between to sides fighting for control, and in the middle of it there is a prophecy about the end of the world.

This is a blockbuster movie production, getting Fastbender just proves it. They are probably just going to ignore all of that fascinating story and focus on everyone's favourite renaissance vigilante killing someone important.

It's going to suck, AC doesn't fit as a movie.

TohouAsura 426 pts

On the other side, making a Raving Rabbids animation TV series for Nickelodeon is a brilliant idea!

winshot 77 pts

WTF!!! Fassbender? Please save us the torture and don't make the movie. My entire image of Assassin's Creed will be broken by imagining him playing the role. Ubisoft, PLEASE!!!! I say PRETTY PLEASE!!!! Get a new actor whom no one knows and then maybe I can live with it even if you f**K up the movie which I know you surely will.

Andrecosta13 28 pts

winshot What the hell are you talking? Fassbender is EPIC! A new actor? What do you want, a sh*tty one? Fassbender will do a great job!

winshot 77 pts

Andrecosta13 FASSBENDER is not suitable for the world of Assassin's even if he's an okay actor. There is a certain grace that needs to be carried in the roles of the creed. A sense of freshness that ignites your creed quality that you have developed living the world of assassin's in the game is required and not a actor who is seen in many roles already and stuck with you. It makes you feel "Oh! Damn! This is a movie. I should stop watching and go play the game". To get trapped in the AC universe a new guy with actual talent to live up to the assassin character is need. That Ezio's face in the game cannot be replaced by a know character. At least DAMN Ubisoft should make a animated movie and go make a deal with PIXAR! Geez!!! What in the hell is the world coming to.

saif20 5 pts

winshot Dude? the hell are you talking about? Fassbender is a good actor and CAN be a good assassin in the movie. why bring a new face who didn't even act before to act as a FUCKING ASSASSIN? freshness my butthole, please make sense. and I'm not saying this will be PERFECT but COME ON fassbender could kill it as an assassin ... don't judge the movie before its even out. Give it some time

samantha_sneez 158 pts

@saif20 @winshot OMG such unsavory language over a freaking video game to movie adaptation. Mommy must not be home.

saif20 5 pts

samantha_sneez  saif20  winshot Ofc she's not home ... she's dead. Don't open your mouth and think your smart then end up being the dumbass here.

winshot 77 pts

saif20 Yeah, Mr.ROBOT can replace Altair or Ezio. Jake Gyllenhal did a great f**kin' job with Prince of Persia right? Any guy who really lived in the assassin's creed game would know what I mean. If you like fassbender imagine him when playing the game. Ubisoft will drop him after seeing the bashing that's been going on in the forums of this choice. If they care.
