[Good Scenes In Bad Movies] The ‘Ghost Ship’ Edition!!!

Another confession. In addition to the House Of Wax remake from last week’s article, I’ve never seen the Ghost Ship either. By most accounts it is terrible. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean every single frame of it is bad! I know there are plenty of moments I love in otherwsie sh*tty movies. And that’s precisely the point The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards) aims to illustrate here in his first column for Bloody-Disgusting!

We’re going to, on occasion, start examining decent scenes in otherwise bad movies. And we hope you’ll come along for the ride! Head inside for his take on Ghost Ship! READ MORE

Holy Crap, It’s Daniel Radcliffe With ‘Horns’!

Horror fav Alex Aja (High Tension, Mirrors, Piranha 3D) is finally back behind cameras with Horns, an adaptation of Joe Hill’s story that will star Daniel Radcliffe, Max Minghella, Juno Temple, Joe Anderson, Kelli Garner and James Remar.

EW has landed the first teaser image that shows us our first look at The Woman in Black star Radcliffe with a pair of horns. “It’s a very, very different type of part than anything I’ve done before,” teases Radcliffe. Today marked the first time the actor settled into a Vancouver makeup chair for several hours of prosthetics application.

Radcliffe will portray the number one suspect for the rape and murder of his girlfriend. He awakens one morning to find horns starting to grow from his own head and soon realizes their power drives people to confess their sins and give in to their impulses — an effective tool in his quest to discover the true circumstances of his late girlfriend’s tragedy.

He describes his new role as “deeply emotional and also incredibly outrageous in some ways.” Says Radcliffe, “To play somebody who, in the midst of a time in his life of great turmoil anyway, undergoes this horrific transformation into a devil character — it was very, very exciting.READ MORE

The film takes place in “a small town that comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

I was not a fan, sharing this negative review. Watch some clips below and see if maybe they pique your interest.

Cloverfield and Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s Mike Vogel (above) and Killer Movie‘s Nestor Carbonell have joined the cast of A&E’s upcoming series “Bates Motel,” which serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock horror classic Psycho, in recurring roles, says Deadline. “The series examines the twisted relationship between serial-killer-to-be Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his mother Norma (Vera Varmiga). Carbonell will play Sheriff Royce Romero, who has something almost sinister about him.” Vogel will play Deputy Zach Shelby, described as “a completely engaging, attractive, intelligent sociopath.”

They also report that “True Blood” vet Rutina Wesley (below) is in negotiations to star in the thriller Angry Little Gods, which Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) is directing. Wesley would make the movies during her break from filming HBO’s “True Blood,” on which she plays a newbie vampire. In Angry Little Gods, Wesley would play the fiancee to Mark Webber, who unbeknownst to her is playing a twisted game — a make-or-break competition that could make him his fortune or cost him his life. [Interview] ‘Frankenweenie’ Screenwriter John August On Being Pro-Science In A Harsh Political Climate

Frankenweenie is easily the best Tim Burton movie in a decade. I was almost braced to dislike it, so it was a wonderful surprise to find myself concurring with Brad’s glowing review. In the film, a young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

I recently sat down with screenwriter John August (Big Fish, Go) to talk about how he approached the expansion of Burton’s original 25 minute short into a feature length piece. We also discuss some of the amazing speeches made in the film by Martin Landau’s no BS teacher Mr. Rzykruski. They’re quite refreshing to hear given how timid a lot of mainstream films are in regard to these things.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow), while Charlie Tahan and Atticus Shaffer were later added. Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film, and that several of the character names—Victor, Elsa Van Helsing, Edgar “E” Gore and Mr. Burgermeister — were inspired by classic horror films.

Frankenweenie hits theaters October 5th. Head inside for the interview! READ MORE

Writer/director Eric England made a splash earlier this year with Madison County and it looks like his 2013 will be busy as well with the release of Contracted and his installment in Chiller TV’s anthology “Chilling Visions: 5 Senses of Fear.”

Also coming next year, pending distribution, is Roadside, a single location thriller that “Finds Dan Summers and his pregnant wife, Mindy, in a fight for their lives when they are held hostage in their car by an unseen gunman on the side of a desolate mountain road.” Ace Marrero, Katie Stegeman, Alan Pietruszewski, Lionel D. Carson and Jack Curenton all star.

Raid-Dredd

[Special Feature] ‘Dredd 3-D’ vs. ‘The Raid: Redemption’

When Lionsgate released their trailer for Dredd 3-D way back in July, we all basically thought the same thing: “Hey, this looks an awful lot like The Raid.”

It’s no wonder why. Just like The Raid, Dredd’s trailer sells a film in which an outmatched badass must take on an entire building of villains, battling level by level to the top floor where he must kill a drug kingpin who waits among cool, mini-boss henchmen.

You can cry foul all you want, but sometimes these things aren’t so simple. According to Wikipedia, Dredd started filming in Novemember 2010, while The Raid began its shoot four months later in March 2011. So there appear to be no shenanigans here to curse. We instead have something a bit more complicated. Two movies, completely independent of each other, both utilizing the completely awesome conceit of containing their action film within dangerous high-rises.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun comparing the two, if only to highlight what an embarrassment of riches we action fans have been enjoying recently. Head inside for the death match! READ MORE

The Clouds Part, Revealing A Release Date For ‘Dark Skies’

Scott Charles Stewart’s Dark Skies kicked off production on August 3rd, and it looks like things went smoothly during the shoot as the film already has a release date of February 22, 2013 via Dimension. The film stars Keri Russell, Daniel Barrett, Josh Hamilton and Dakota Goyo.

Jason Blum produced the film through his Blumhouse Productions and Alliance Films and Dimension is onboard to distribute, we exclusively reported that the horror flick focuses on a 6-year-old boy who’s apparently been “marked” by an alien (living among us) for future abduction. It looks like it taps into some of the same themes of Fright Night, while also playing into child abuse (did the parents cause these marks on the child’s body?)

[Interview] Director Jennifer Lynch Talks ‘Chained’, ‘A Fall From Grace’ And ‘The Monster Next Door’

If you’re a fan of director Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena, Surveillance, Hisss), her new film Chained hits Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD today – October 2nd – from Anchor Bay Films.

I recently hopped on the phone with Lynch and we talked about the challenges of making an intense serial killer film, the process of casting Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men In Black, “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”) and her upcoming projects. It turns out she’s taking a turn into lighter fare (after her very next film, A Fall From Grace) with the Monster Squad-esque The Monster Next Door.

In Chained, “Coming home from a routine trip to the movies, eight-year-old Tim (Bird) and his mother, Sarah (Ormond) are picked up by a psychopathic cab driver named Bob (D’Onofrio). It ends up being their last ride together. Bob murders the young boy’s mother and keeps Tim as his unwilling protégée, making him clean up the mess following each murder he commits. After a couple of aborted escape attempts, Bob chains Tim – now renamed Rabbit — allowing just enough length to move freely within the house. As the years pass, Bob starts instructing Rabbit, teaching him anatomy and human behavior. Now a teenager, Rabbit (Eamon Farren, X: Night of Vengeance) is slowly being pressed by Bob to start his own homicidal spree. Slowly but surely, he must soon choose whether to follow in Bob’s serial killer footsteps or make one final, desperate attempt to break free…”

The cast also includes Gina Phillips (Jeepers Creepers, “Ally McBeal”) Conor Leslie (“90210”), Evan Bird (“The Killing”), with Jake Weber (Dawn of the Dead, “Medium”) and Julia Ormand (My Week With Marilyn, “Mad Men,” The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). The Chained Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD also includes, as a bonus feature, the scene that prompted the MPAA give the film an NC-17 rating. Head inside for the interview! READ MORE
