Criterion: 'We will make another Burnout game'
Creative director Craig Sullivan confirms studio will "at some point" make new entry in series; teases company may develop Road Rash game next.
Criterion may be focused on the Need for Speed series at present, but that does not mean the company is abandoning its Burnout franchise. Speaking to The Guardian, Criterion creative director Craig Sullivan pledged the Guildford, London studio will return to the series at some point in the future.
"There's still a lot of stuff we want to do with driving," Sullivan said. "We will make another Burnout game at some point. Obviously, as we're working on NFS we're thinking of really good ideas that aren't right for this series; there are ideas that we're going to explore with Burnout. And we wouldn't be making NFS or Burnout games if we didn't think the driving genre had a long shelf life and that we could push the boundaries."
The most recent core Burnout game Criterion made was 2008's Burnout Paradise. The studio took the franchise to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in 2011 with Burnout Crash, and is currently wrapping up development on Need for Speed: Most Wanted, due out October 30.
As for where Criterion may head in the future, Sullivan teased that the studio may develop something without vehicles at all, but a Road Rash game is more likely.
"We might make a Road Rash game…But then we might make a game without vehicles in it," he said. "I mean, we made Black, I was the lead designer; we might make a game about blowing the crap out of each other. But Road Rash seems like a good fit for Criterion…"
In 2009, Electronic Arts re-trademarked Road Rash, but nothing has come of it since.
I hope they make Road Rash, at least we'll finally get a sequel to that awesome IP. I'm not big on them making NFS games because they feel more like Burnout games than NFS. But if no one else can make a decent NFS game I don't know what to say...
I don't care about what they want to make as long as it's not another Need for Speed game. Period.
Well if it doesn't offer split screen local-multiplayer I don't really see the point of making another one. From Burnout 3 (which was awesome) to today the series has largely left me not giving a crap about what they make next.
we want BLACK 2 !!!
A new Road Rash game would be awesome. Make it happen Criterion.
I don't think a new Road Rash game, regardless of who made it, would meet the expectations of gamers. Games of that era don't seem to do too well by todays standards; developers always seem to overcomplicate the core gameplay. // I'd absolutely love a new Black. Even now there's just something about that game which helps it stand-out for me. But honestly I'm not all that excited for a new Burnout.
PlatinumPaladin Road Rash might not meet the glowy expectations of older players, but we still need a Motorcycle racing game. i haven't seen one for many years. The last RR game suffered from the gameplay not concentrating on the fighting. it's driving model was too simplistic to make the racing interesting.
Yes please. I'm no snob, all the Burnouts had a great deal to offer.
Criterion makes another, and I'll play that next one over 100 hours, just like the others.
With them at the helm I'd rather not see Road Rash come back.....
They destroyed NFS, and they'll destroy anything good about Road Rash.....
It's obvious all of EA's studios are filled with morons anymore....
Burnout revenge was the last burnout to me...I hope they make a burnout so good as burnout revenge or better if possible....Burnout Revenge's soundtrack was the best that i've ever seen in one game...so please .. fill the game of cool musics like they did with revenge ( rock ,hardcore , industrial ...).Paradise soundtracks sucked lol ...
@Stardust7 While I do agree that Revenge was a better game than Paradise, my reasons for that extend beyond the mere soundtrack.
PlatinumPaladin I have more reasons to prefer revenge too lol ...about the soundtrack ..its just my personal opinion ...but I'll never say something like "mere soundtrack" ..Firstly because i love music...Secondly because the soundtrack is very important to any game ,movies etc....The soundtracks can stir up emotions ...
Stardust7 PlatinumPaladin Yes the soundtrack can add a lot to the atmosphere of the game indeed. The original NFSMW had an excellent soundtrack and no NFS game since has had that. I have never played a Burnout game because I've never owned a console post '98. I hope this time they release the game on PC.
Another Road Rash or Burnout game would be sweet!
It seems so stupid not to make Burnout, people like this game so make it. It's the same with a lot of games. Then they take Call of Duty and shove it down your throat
kind of. Call of Duty doesn't even have building destruction, it should be like Mercenaries.
I would love a Road Rash reboot : )
Another burnout will be nice but what about another BLACK game?
I'd be happy with another burnout game, and another road rash could be cool been a while since ive seen that name
And I will be buying that burnout game.
road rash might be cool but another burnout would be awesome!!
I like Burnout 3: Takedown.
Alot went right in the production of that one.
I never cared much for Need for Speed.
Road Rash ~ I don't know. Some people love it more than pizza. I had a few laughs playing it with friends but I never got into it.
road rash please imagine that awesomeness
Oh......My.......God..... Please, for the love of all that is good, make Road Rash. I have been waiting too long.
Road Rash has been long overdue for a sequel/reboot. I don't know if I would want criterion handling it though, I think it would have to be a little bit more gritty than they are used to.
I thought Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted pretty much WERE Burnout games... not that I'm complaining at all- Need For Speed is interesting again for the first time in years because of them. Road Rash possibilities certainly spark my interest too.
What I'd REALLY like to see Criterion do, though, is combine Burnout with Black- and make an action sandbox so incredibly awesome it'd melt your eyes.
A Burnout game would be great for the Xbox 720 and PS4 as launch titles. Criterion could make it happen since at least the Xbox 720 is believed to be launching in Nov 2013.
Oh god, Road Rash by Criterion sounds awesome. FUND IT!
Road rash was awesome! Bring it back!
Oh please - not another Black, Criterion.
What can you possibly add to an already saturated genre that has a dearth of remarkably new ideas, Criterion?
Spartan_418 You are still too lazy to type a response, I see. :P
I hope it's not another Burnout Crash. An another Road Rash game might be interesting.
Even a follow-up to Paradise would've been a better idea.
This is Criterion's bread and butter, this isn't a surprise to me.
Oh a new Road Rash would be totally wicked. I have fond memories of Road Rash 2 and 3 on Genesis. Maybe make it open world like the Need For Speed games.
Oh, man, Road Rash. That takes me back. I may have to did those old games up.
I have such fond memories of Road Rash. The sweet simplicity of braining another biker with a pipe was awesome.
Not sure I could do another Burnout after Burnout with real cars, I mean NFS MW.
rudyv30 I could. NFS MW doesn't even have a realistic crash model. Do you remember the crashes in Paradise?
Sweet!
Burnout Revenge was one of the first games that I had an absolute blast with on 360, and Paradise was even better. A new series entry is way overdue
just make a new RC Pro Am
bongsyas_23 Now THAT is old school awesomeness!
I enjoyed both 3 and revenge the most
Seriously just make Paradise 2
Well get the hell on it then, its not like the last Burnout game wasn't one of the most beloved arcade racers of all time...
singhellotaku I hope you are talking about Burnout Paradise, and not Burnout Crash.
Ultra_Taco I forgot Crash even existed, yeah I meant Burnout Paradise, I'll have to edit my comment to indicate that.
Road Rash? OMFG R U SERIOUS. The lil' kid in me sitting at my Sega, numbed with excitement. Count me the hell in.
This is a double whammy, "Road Rash" brought to you by the creators of "Burnout" just has a nice ring to it as well. Love the Burnout series, not complicated just plain fun.
