Doom 3: BFG Edition releases October 16
Revamped edition of id Software shooter, expansion, and new content coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 for $40 and PC for $30.
Space marines who look forward to seeing what they're shooting in Doom 3: BFG Edition will need to wait until its release on October 16, Bethesda announced today.
The BFG Edition includes remastered versions of the 2004 first-person shooter, its 2005 expansion Resurrection of Evil, and The Lost Mission, a new seven-mission pack. It also contains the original Doom and Doom II games, frequently cited as progenitors of the FPS genre. Doom 3 and its expansion will receive a high-definition face-lift with new lighting and rendering as well as stereoscopic 3D support, 5.1 surround sound, and achievements and trophies for their respective consoles.
The gameplay will also receive changes in the form of a new checkpoint system and an armor-mounted flashlight, allowing players to operate weaponry while simultaneously illuminating Doom 3's darkened environments. The previous version required players to shift back and forth between the handheld flashlight's visual awareness and the much heftier firepower of Doom's diverse arsenal--inspiring a "duct tape mod" to give players the best of both worlds.
The package is set at $40 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and $30 for the PC. For more on the original Doom 3, check out GameSpot's 2004 review.
40 bucks? You kidding...
I might have gotten this game but they left out Final Doom... Why??? Why do devs always omit one game from these super collections?
if they had FD in it it would have been a complete collection
@mischiefmeerkat I feel the same way! It really grinds my gears when they pull that crap.
I still say it does not stand Better Flashlight Guys. But Big Fucking Gun.
Played this on the PC a long time ago. Considering getting this for the PS3 again, pure for the overhauled graphics and 3d :D. Wondering when we will hear about Doom 4 as well!
A lot of souls I've talked to didn't like D3 that much but I simply LOVED!! it. it looked good, kept you on your toes and was a sci-fi horror in a semi-believable environment that i could relate to and enjoy.
I've played D3 more than 8 times over and with this revamp I expect I will happily play it at few more times (esp with the reported new levels)
The suggestion of 3D support really appeals so I'm thinking I may very well end up parting with my cash for this title.
I sure hope ID are doing their homework and putting together some good stuff for the suggested D4 (PLEASE HURRY UP AND RELEASE IT AND DON'T TEASE ME AND f**K ME ABOUT FOR YEARS BEFORE DOING SO - GET IT DONE THEN START TALKING ABOUT IT PLEASE ID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
this has me so freakin psyched. i never got to play doom 3. i played the demo but my computer at the time was crap. i love the 1st 2 im really psyched about that. and being able to play all 3 on my ps3 plus aditional levels has me so so psyched. i may have to cancel my resident evil 6 preorder just for this game. screw resident evil the last game they came out with was crap this is doom. countless hours of running thru levels and looking for ever secret without going online and cheating. playing nightmare without cheats. this is exactly what ive been waiting for, for quite a few years.
Will Doom and Doom2 be fixed to work with a mouse on a current OS this time or will it be the same DOS shovel ware they released before?
Thats funny, the mounted flash light on this BFG Edition and also the checkpoint system proves that i was correct back on 2005 with my so long text humiliating ID's effort in my review for Doom 3. I remember it very well, i gave to them 2,5 as overall score, i almost got banned from here because of it.
theCCyberDDemon So? lol
I'm game :D
Fixes my biggest gripe, and includes way more than before. I am excited.
Looking forward to the new levels, better graphics on a great game. Dont really care about the old doom. Been down that route with oldie games. The nostalgia lasts for about 10 minutes at which point the crappy ass graphics cheesy game mechancis get on your nerves and you remember why you have such a high end computer
@DatDirtyDawG Right? Lol. I used to go out and buy up old games I used to play, and quickly realized I can only stand playing it for 20 mins or so and I'm like, holy sheet, this is boring as duck.
Hmmm, $30 for better visuals, DLC included, brand new levels, and the co-op mode that the PC version was lacking? Sold.
definitely worth it if you've never played doom 3.
Awesome. I'm happy to pay $40 for this. 3 great games plus some extra content. Sounds good to me!
I would have loved to have owned this game on the vita. Too bad no vita port is coming. this game probably would have made a killing in sales since vita owners seem more than happy to pay $39.99 for ports like MGSHD collection.
No handheld flashlight makes me sad.
Nothing was for fun than beating a zombie with a flashlight. Nothing /:
I bought the Doom 3 for PC for under $10.00. I still have the psx versions of Doom and Ultimate doom, I don't have a reason to buy this new version. But if you don't have them, by all means go for it, even if it is a bit overpriced.
With Doom 3, the expansion pack, mods, and the addition of enhanced graphics and steroscopic 3d! I don't think its over priced at all considering I have been trying to get another copy of doom 3 for the xbox with no real luck as online stores want to charge $40 to $60 for this old xbox game.
Doom 3 is brilliant! But the xbox version is 360 compatible so $40 seems a bit steep, considering you can get the original for about a pound.
Basically, high-definition releases for console counterparts. A basic, copy and paste release for PC?
Does anyone know if the PC version was "touched up" at all?
I understand most people will be buying it for the Lost Mission.
why u no 19.99 damn it.
Carmack not excited about better graphics. Response: release 8 year old game with improved graphics.
manicwagon
Of course.
It's his direct response.
It's all his Idea.
You know what, I bet it's Carmack alone who makes all decisions in the company.
You're lucky if he's even working on the thing.
at glance Doom 3 BFG seems convincing,
but with further observation this is nothing more than cheap-port from original releases.
there's no differences with other crappy HD port, (released by Capcom or Konami.)
The basic engine looks all that same.
Doom 3 released on the 2004, Doom 3 BFG is just like 2005/6 games.
(Battlefield 2, FEAR 1.) anyone??
it's just 15% / 19% better from the original PC version.
and 27% better from the original Consoles version.
they just add higher resolution to it (to fit 720p.)
Lighting-fix, here and there.
(but overall,,, the basic engine still all the same.)
Developers should build HD Remake from the ground, using current tech / engine,
and upgrading the engine up to 100%
this is just a lazy attempt to attract Console users,
(since there's no backward-compatibility on those system.) good luck throwing $40.
no wonder EA, and Activision raping Console Users.
this is one of many example.
this is not "HD Remake" (literally.), this is called "Port" folks. (Direct conversion.)
Ladiesman17
The basic Idea was to make it available to the Playstation people who never had a chance to play it. What's wrong with saying "oh we went through the trouble already. Why not throw it there on XBLA and Steam if anyone wants it?"
Ladiesman17Currently under active production, Doom Mesa is a complete re-creation of the game Doom 3, utilizing the Doom 3 engine. Doom Mesa will let you re-visit the world that restarted the Doom continuum. Doom Mesa was built and founded on the basis that Doom 3 BFG Edition didn't fully live up to the potential of a Doom 3 remaster.
Okay seriously the flashlight thing made sense in the original. Think about it.
The point of a Flashlight: To illuminate.
Who needs a flashlight: People who need to see, like maintenance and security. A handheld flashlight has better use to them as they can more easily direct the rays. Sure armor mounted is great if you need to blast demons with a gun but I am sure they weren't expecting that.
Don't say duck tape because a gun can't opperate with tape wrapped around it. Also the need to take the tape off and reattach it to a new weapon is just silly.
My point. In the universe of doom, even though it is futuristic, it makes sense that flashlights were not attached to the gun or armor.
Look at security today. They use mag-lights for a reason. It is more practical for everyday use.
blacklab421 wait, what?
That is my reaction to all who think the flashlight didn't make sense =]
blacklab421 You, my friend, have a point.
Although I don't need an explaination. I liked the hand held flashlight just because of the horror value it added to the game.
one of the best coop experiences of all time.
40$ is a very exorbitant price! I've already played Doom 3 and I'm not interested in this BFG edition..
The_Godfather_
Me neither but it wasn't made for us.
oldskool game for people who love gameplay more than shiny graphics
d00m 4 is coming
Saving $40. Looks good for those that haven't played Doom 3 though. Doom 3 is one of the best atmospheric games ever developed. Love.
This game is going to be awesome. 60fps for the SUPERIOR Xbox 360 and 50ist fps for the over priced internet ready blu ray player. But i'll still be good. Doom3 on the original Xbox was great. Buying it day one.
The Xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made. --John Carmack
buying1999 360 is the least dependable system ever made, that is a more accurate statement.
buying1999 Lolwut. Did i fall back in time to 2006? Jesus kid, calm yourself.. these are just devices we use to play games on.. nothing more.
buying1999 Really? Look at Uncharted 3 and tell me Xbox is "superior".
buying1999 LOL if that was an actual Carmack quote i'd burn all my copies of iD Software games. Even the ones in Steam.
But it's not. so...
buying1999 yes but its better in 3d on PS3 and you get something on psn plus like free games, what do you get on xbox live gold, Sorry oh yes cross game chat and online play with your own connection you already pay for. Xbox live gold what a great value for money. also the most unreliable console in gaming history keep going m$.
Someone finally found some duck tape on Mars
Outatomomega Read my post above. =]
Sweet, Oct 16 is my birthday, and I've always wanted to be able to play Doom3 on my 3D monitor. Happy days!

Doom 3 Review
While not as remarkable as the technology that fuels it, the game itself is put together well enough to make Doom 3 legitimately great, all things considered.
