Content featuring fifth playable class available now for $9.99 or 800 Microsoft Points.

2K Games and Gearbox Software recently announced that its upcoming Borderlands 2 DLC featuring a fifth playable class is out earlier than expected.

The Mechromancer DLC will be available for download right now on October 9 for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions of the game. Further clarification was provided by Gearbox Studio president Randy Pitchford on Twitter. Gamers who did not pre-order the game will have to fork out $9.99 or 800 Microsoft Points for it.

The DLC will allow players to use Gaige the Mechromancer who has the ability to summon a giant robot called Deathtrap to assist her. Her upgrade paths are focused on afflicting status effects, powering up her Anarchy skill, and giving support and buffs to less-skilled players around her. Players can check out the character's skill tree on the game's official site.

The DLC was initially planned for an October 16 release. For more information, check out GameSpot's review and video feature on the game.

i screwed myself i preorder the game but lost the stupid receipt. then to make things worse to play online you have to download the patch but when i try it glitches & says it cost over 3million xbox live points what a let down.

thehawk3986 9 pts

deathblow3 hey if you lost the receipt you can go back to GameStop if thats where you preordered from. They will usually give you a back up code. I had an issue with my codes as well.

yeah tried that to no avail so i am screwed

Thanks Gearbox, I was really trying to get through my playthrough with Zero before being tempted to play another class and you just had to go and release another character a week early just to tempt me!

CamoBullo 111 pts

After some time with the Mechromancer, it is definitely worth the $10, despite I pre-ordered the game. While many may say this is a rip-off, it gives you a completely different experience. I'm currently going down the Ordered Chaos tree, and it just makes her into a beast. And hey, at least this isn't a crappy map pack -- it's a new experience with a new character.

thehawk3986 9 pts

All you people bitching because you didn't pre-order a game need to shut up and just pay for the content. And for the idiots who are like "$10 JUST for a new character" obviously have no clue how much work and effort goes into making a character a game like this or any game for that matter. You have a whole other class to play with in the game, a whole new skill tree and everything. what is the matter with some of you idiots. smh

poster012 68 pts

thehawk3986 I hear that in Borderlands 3, they're making each zone separate DLC for $10, but it's okay because zones are hard to make. You know, because each zone is like a whole other experience, with new textures and terrain. Totally worth it! I can't wait!

thehawk3986 9 pts

poster012 O wow you know how to use sarcasm.. congrats. Dude seriously its bonus content that they were already going to charge everyone for anyway. But they decided to give the people who preordered the game a treat. Is that so wrong. What is the matter with everyone. The game has a ton of content with 4 DLC packs on the way. (o and btw if you buy the season pass now you save about $20) so please don't say "but but i didn't know that"... All you supposed gamers out there claim to know so much about games, but its amazing how a game that many of you purchased the very first day it was released, was completely unaware of the pre-order content that has been floating around for months now. Shame on you. Gamers love to complain about things that are usually their own faults. Everyone grow up. Gearbox released an awesome title and they have some really awesome bonus content on the way. Let's support devs that are still giving us quality material, and stop complaining about DLC. DLC is here and unfortunately believe it or not WE the consumer is to blame for purchasing bullshit DLC content from other games like (costume packs). Now the industry knows that WE are gullible idiots who are willing to easily be seperated from our hard earned dollars.

thehawk3986 I am aware of the pre-order crap they pulled, and I'm also aware of the stupid season pass. I hated the DLC for the first game (regrettably, I bought all of it). Designing games around DLC is unacceptable. I was really annoyed when I discovered that they did it with the first game. I didn't buy Borderlands 2 because it's just a rehash of it predecessor (luckily I was able to play it at a friend's before I wasted money on it). They did what people lambaste EA for. All they tried to do was one-up the first one, and it came off as pathetic. The jokes weren't funny, Claptrap was magnitudes more irritating, and the main villain was woefully uninspired. He was basically a rip-off of the General from the Borderlands 1 DLC. It was a stupid character then and, it's a stupid character now. The Zero Punctuation review nailed it. So, no, I don't want to reward Gearbox for this crap. I think they have a skilled team and can do better than just playing it safe and following a template. I was hoping that they would be more creative with the Borderlands sequel, but they just caved to stupid consumers whom cry about a stale market, then turn around a buy next iteration of the same game. Well, they didn't my money for Borderlands 2, and it's unlikely they'll get my money for Borderlands 3.

thehawk3986 9 pts

poster012 I don't get you buddy. BL1 didn't even really have a real storyline the game was empty and barren for the most part. The game was built on having you killing and looting. O yeah and more killing and looting. The game is not supposed to be some deep FPS with an intense characterization and beautifully interwoven plot lines. BL2 is just a bigger beast of a game than BL1 was. They took about 90% of the elements that were present in the 1st one and tried to vastly improve them for this iteration. That is exactly what people who actually liked the franchise wanted from Gearbox. I have no idea what it is you were expecting. And just because a Dev team puts out DLC does not mean that they are designing the entire game around it. Both BL1 & BL2 had plenty of content without DLC expansions. BL2 is not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, but the game is great. The characters are entertaining and sometimes even affable.

Yathzee from ZP!, although I find his mad quibbles hilarious, he single handily gave one of the worse reviews of the game I have ever seen. Not only was he saying things that were incorrect about the game itself like the fact that you can't track more than one Mission at a time, but it truly sounded like he just doesn't like the franchise to begin with. Much like you! If you don't like the franchise just say you don't like the franchise, don't come and leave comments like you have some unique introspection into the game. Because you don't. You didn't like BL1 and if you didn't like that one you most def wasn't going to like this one. Whining about DLC and all this other tripe is a waste of time and energy. cheerio mate

thehawk3986 I never said that I didn't like the first one. I did, for the most part. I didn't like that they had DLC in mind when making it. For instance, I absolutely hated that they had level-scaling on the second play-through, and I didn't know why they did it until I downloaded the DLC. That's why the did it, so that they could shove in content without screwing up the levels of the campaign. It made the second run substantially less fun. I hated the DLC, but I had a lot of fun on my first play. Yahtzee nailed B2's description when he was talking about the wallpaper, because that's exactly how I felt when I played it. The story wasn't gripping... the story wasn't even a complaint of mine from the first one. It didn't need some epic narrative. The second one, indeed, has more story, but it just gets in the way of the action. Being called up by an extremely irritating villain every five minutes isn't my idea of an improvement. Borderlands 2 is just a tarted-up retread; that's it. I could tell that immediately during the intro, and the rest of the game follows suit. They just tried to make everything bigger and better, but they ended up tacking on a bunch of superficial crap. All of the humor felt forced, it constantly referenced its predecessor in distasteful ways, like that whole seen with the claptrap in the beginning. Even the new environments didn't make the game feel any different. And I totally agree with Yahtzee about the loot; I eventually just stopped looking in lockers entirely, because I got tired of opening ten of them just to get a couple dollars. From what I've heard, it even carried over the same issue with having to unload a million bullets into each enemy towards the end of the game. All of the "powerful" artillery you find ends up just feeling like pea shooters. To be honest, I might have enjoyed this game a little more if I never played this first one. Though, the humor and NPCs would still be just as annoying, but at least I might enjoy the shooting mechanics a little more. However, I already had my fill of the first game, so that novelty is long gone. For having so much content, it doesn't offer very much.

Trinitarian 58 pts

people who are not loyal fans and did not preorder the game do not deserve to get this for free. Pay up or shut up its your own dam fault.

buccomatic 1539 pts

$10.00 is way too much for another character or class. this really should have just came with the game for free.

gearbox is a joke, almost as bad as EA when it comes to DLC ripoffs.

greenballer 6 pts

buccomatic How is it a rip off when tons of people got the content for free. You could have got it for free as well with online pre order or in store pre order.

Trinitarian 58 pts

buccomatic pfff go cry a river somewhere else. If you spent $5 bucks to preorder the game this would have been yours for free. You shouldn't try and speak and think at the same time your going to through your fragile body out of balance.

Bl4KD37H 154 pts

if you spent 5 bucks then it isnt free is just half the price.

mViRuSz 5 pts

Bl4KD37H Not really you play the full amount for the game without paying for the character, the $5 goes to the game not the DLC

poster012 68 pts

buccomatic I was on the fence about Borderlands 2, anyway. This just made me not get it. it seemed like a sleazy way to grab pre-orders. I was able to play on my friend's Steam account, and I wasn't impressed. It's just a retread of the first game. Those that say otherwise have no concept of what different is. People complain about all of EA and Activision's rehashed franchises, but this is just as much of an offender.

lukemo 5 pts

 poster012  buccomatic

It is very similar to the first game.  But if they had changed it up a lot, people would be pissed about that.  I'd bet there are A LOT more people perfectly happy to play more of the "same" borderlands than people who are unhappy that it's too much like the first one.  You say you've played it at a buddies, and then make sweeping generalizations about the game?  If you played through the game completely (which you must know takes a very long time), you may find that it is surprising, funny, exciting, and new in many ways. Talk about judging a book by it's cover.

Also, I didn't preorder the game. But, I'll probably buy the DLC.  Like anything else, it's worth what people will pay for it and to me, $10 spent for 40 hours of entertainment with a new character is pretty reasonable.

jwinding 5 pts

I didn't pre-order, I just popped down into my local Blockbuster two days ago and bought the game and as luck would have it, the 'Premiere Club' code was included in the box. Now, I feel just fine investing in the season pass.

jwinding 5 pts

Btw, I really like playing as Gaige, the 'Ordered Chaos' skill tree is fantastic.

Toysoldier34 412 pts

I was wondering how I got it when I first launched it. But I stopped caring pretty quickly when they said the character was an easy mode and simplified. I just carried on as normal and didn't really bother me if I had it or not.

I may check this out if I get tired of Dishonored.

comb5 200 pts

Toysoldier34 Actually only one skill tree "Best Friends Forever" is the 'easy' mode. Her other skill trees are normal. One focuses on lightning damage and the other actually makes the game quite challenging and strategic.

The-Neon-Seal 242 pts

Toysoldier34 Loving the character so far (some of her lines are really unxpected like when she makes comments while browsing the menu) and so far she has been ALOT harder to play as than the commando. (I'm following the "Little Big Trouble" and "Best Friends Forever" trees)

Cruisemissile 399 pts

I never pre ordered but got this for free anyway, it was included in my PC version of Borderlands 2.

OHGFawx 327 pts

Cruisemissile You must have bought a pre-order copy that someone never showed up to claim, or cancelled for some reason.

jesuschristmonk 41 pts

I already have her, since I pre-ordered, but I'd gladly pay $10 to give Gearbox some more well earned money.

Cube_Girl 39 pts

If they add another class it should be a Claptrap, that way I can follow other players around and annoy them with my beatboxing until they give me their loot.

Landsharkk 802 pts

Cube_Girl I had a conversation about this with a friend of mine.  I'm really hoping one of the upcoming DLC's is a DLC focused on letting you murder hundreds and hundreds of claptraps.  I mean just totally annihilating them.  Or maybe a 'torture the claptrap' DLC where you slowly pull them a part, piece by piece.

I guess anything involving murdering claptraps would be fine.

kerrman 58 pts

Landsharkk  Cube_Girl Sooo.. the final DLC for the first Borderlands..

I downloaded the update from Steam, and I had zero issues.

PETERAKO 77 pts

this is too expensive for a playable character.

Darkmoone1 100 pts

PETERAKO If you really wanted her you should've pre-ordered.

PETERAKO 77 pts

Darkmoone1 Pre ordering is risky at best. no feedback, no reassurance. if the game did not meet the expectations, then this might result in a permanent loss of 60 bucks that could be used to buy more than one games with actual feedback(not to mention GOTYs which might be cheaper or similarly priced as the originals with all extra content included)

patience is my path. patience is my trial. patience is rewarded. patience becomes my life. the waiting game has began.

Darkmoone1 100 pts

PETERAKO Maybe pre-order the day before the game came out on Steam? Thats what I did and there were tons of good feedback. :P

Toysoldier34 412 pts

PETERAKO  Darkmoone1 I pre-ordered the game 2 months or so in advanced for $35.

BlessTheMusic 33 pts

PETERAKO  Darkmoone1 Lol pre ordering is risky? Its 5 dollars, if the game sucks get your five dollars back. Also this is Borderlands 2 not some random ass game, we all knew it was going to be good. But nice try.

deathblow3 240 pts

PETERAKO  Darkmoone1 wrong if you pre-order from the right place then find out that the game is no good.(high profile games get reviews day of or same week) it is still preorder if youpick it up a week late if you dont like reviews then you can cancel/move the money to a different purchase. so you can still preorder and take a wait and see attitude. i have yet to pick up dishonored but i have preordered it.

deathblow3 240 pts

PETERAKO  Darkmoone1 cost me 5 bucks.

PETERAKO 77 pts

deathblow3  PETERAKO  Darkmoone1  note that you guys are in a different region
