UK game chart: February 26 - March 3

Square Enix celebrates another week at the top with Final Fantasy XII; Sonic returns to the top five.

Final Fantasy XII, the PlayStation 2-exclusive title from Square Enix, has held onto the top slot in the UK all-formats game chart for a second week. The only time a Final Fantasy game has been number one for a longer period was Final Fantasy IX for the PlayStation, which kept the top position for three weeks.

The success of Final Fantasy has kept Microsoft's Crackdown at number two for another week--the latest expansion in Electronic Arts' massively successful Sim series, The Sims 2 Seasons, arrived in the chart at number three.

The all-formats top 10 featured six platform-exclusive games last week, with Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii making its debut at five. Nintendo DS exclusives Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training (Brain Age in the US) moved up three places to take it back into the top 10 at number eight, and New Super Mario Bros. held on to 10th place.

The remaining titles in the top 10 all lost places--FIFA 07 went down from three to four, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 slipped from four to six, Need for Speed Carbon lost two places at seven, and The Sims 2 dropped from eight to nine.

There was only one new entry in the wider top 40--following the release of the movie, Take 2's Ghost Rider arrived at 24. A number of DS titles reentered the chart and helped to make Nintendo the most-represented publisher within the top 40--overall, games by Japanese publishers made up half the titles in the chart.

This week sees the release of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for the Xbox 360, along with another sequel in the shape of Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis. Murder-mystery fans will also have a chance to sharpen their skills with the release of CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder and Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express, both for the PC.

"Seabra: Lol TTdog lot's of games sell cos of their music from Rez to singstar" Very brave to select two music based games (I'm suprised you neglected Guitar Hero) and what with Rez being only 4 or 5 years old, show me someone who bought a mainstream title on music alone and I'll show you a retard or you can just look in the mirror. If you think people buy games for music then I'll ask you 1 question... what colour is the sky on your planet?

Well done to FFXII, that game deserves the top spot, and is so far game of the year in my mind, but it's a shame that Okami isn't in there, 12 and Okami shouldn't have been released so close to each other, they're dividing my attention.

The Sonic Wii game has performed better than the PSP sonic game and 360 version which if I recall correctly failed to make it into the top 40. Revival? Maybe............

Awful games sell, mostly to grannies and parents who haven't the faintest clue about whether a game is any good or not, "There were adverts everywhere so it must be good," purchases from chain stores were the person selling the game barely knows what a PS2 is let alone whether or not the game is any good. It amazes me that people still think that a game in the charts must be good... because its in the charts. Wake up and look at the real world for once. And Seabra.... when did anyone last by a game that costs 30-40 notes because they liked the music?

some times i wonder how buy some of the crap that turns up in our charts, i mean if you go into ah number or game shops and look that the shops chart (or the websites) they are usually fairly respectble charts,. so A. who is buying the crap stuff, and B. where are they buying it from?

TTdog. i never played gears of war. i Said i din't care it was on top. I just don't care. And i admit i don't like microsoft (and it's not cos of fanboyism but more of jealousy) but i'm not always criticising them. Is it hard to understand what i'm saying? 0.o Games on top must have something good about them. We're talking numbers of thousands of sales. Even if it is the music, gameplay, story, etc etc. Cos people are not stupid to buy games that they NEVER played before that everyone says they suck, some are but not enough to get to the tops. The only reasons for a really bad game to sell is cos people like the tv show, movie or what so ever a lot (like the sopranos), or they played a previous game with the same title and like it a lot and so they buy the new one also (like if FFXIII sucked i would buy it anyway). Marketing alone does not put games on top. Cars and all that were on top just for the simple fact that kids like the movie a lot and they never ask to much from a game, they have fun with a simple one. So in our eyes (grownups) those games suck but they are awesome to keep kids entertained and not being a pain in the arse for their parents. Good for them not for us.

Tekirai: I own Okami too and it should be up on that chart, but unforunatley most people in England have no taste >_> It finished it a few days ago and it very nearly took my no. 1 spot ^^;

Tekirai
Tekirai

... as I predicted, I see no sign of Okami on there. Typical. I think I'm the only one in my freaking country who owns the game. Good to know a worthy series is on top though. But I have to ask, why is it rated 16+? I don't play the series, only played a demo once, but the last game I saw from the series was rated 12+. Is there animated blood or something? o_O; *feels stupid*

And yet, Seabra, you state that you don't like Gears of War because you hate Microsoft, not because you've played the game or anything like that, but because you hate Microsoft. Thats fanboyism of the highest order, good work. By the logic of your initial post all the games in the charts are good "If a game sells well is cos it's good, simple or has a great marketing campain (which only good enough games have)", so could you explain why the likes of Cars and Little Britain were in the charts only a couple of weeks ago? Awful games, and thats based on reviews rather than opinions, get marketing budgets just as comparable to other games, look at the amount of ad space FIFA STREET had, and that was slated everywhere, with the exception of the Chavs.

Seabra
Seabra

TTdog did you read it all? "(but i really don't care since i don't like x-box) and why i don't like it ? cos i hate microsoft. But i always stay shut"... i'm not always around criticising microsoft for this and for that cos i simply don't like it. I was saying that most folks do the exact opposite "pointlessly", just to criticise. It' s good that people have an opinion about a game, but it doesn't suck just cos they don't like it. ;)

Why are fanboys making comments? This is a nice mix of games for different platforms.

Seabra; "I just think it's pointless and stupid coming here and criticise something cos you don't like a certain company, game, or type of game without being realistic. Other people do like them and that's the main reason why they sell." Yet you state you hate Microsoft in the same post, quality. I can slag off Killzone because I bought it, and it was awful, games companies can hype even a bad product, if they can afford to develop a game for a console they sure as hell can afford to promote it as well. You can't seriously think that FIFA Street sold on the strength of the product.

What are all you people praising PS2 talking about!? There is one game in that chart that is exclusive to PS2. There are two exclusive to DS, and then one exclusive to Wii and 360. And two PC games!! Overall, I'd say it's actually a pretty mixed chart. Everyone's a winner!

urbanlegend13
urbanlegend13

Not really surprising... They waited so long for FFXII that people want to get a copy of the game the faster they can.

Seabra
Seabra

That's the way you see it TTdog. USUALLY companies spend their advertisement budget in good games. like 90% at least. Gears Of war just won a prize for the best game of the year. (but i really don't care since i don't like x-box) and why i don't like it ? cos i hate microsoft. But i always stay shut. While most start criticising every single game and company that is rival to their favourite one. But what you say it's true also like with FFVII the game that was mot returned by buyers ever. Cos people bought it thinking the graphics were like in the game movies (still i think it's the best game ever). I just think it's pointless and stupid coming here and criticise something cos you don't like a certain company, game, or type of game without being realistic. Other people do like them and that's the main reason why they sell.

Yay for FFXII still being number 1! =D Redeems my faith in the rest of the country somewhat. And FIFA and Pro Evo seem to finally be slipping, which can only be a good thing.... In a way, it's kinda depressing, but I'm actually pretty impressed by this chart =P

lol, as i said last month... FFXII would be number 1... and so it should be!!!

Ever heard of hype Seabra? It suckers people into thinking the game is great and they buy it, and it turns out to be drivel. Killzone was hyped to the max and it sold, and within weeks there were dozens of copies in the trade in bins, for some people Gears of War was over hyped. Its called marketing. Man if you believe that only good games get a big marketing campaign then you've got a lot to learn.

Damn most of u guys are a big.... you guys just now to criticise. there's diferent people for diferent types of games. Otherwise it would be the same sh!t games over and over again. If a game sells well is cos it's good, simple or has a great marketing campain (which only good enough games have). I bet most of the games are classified from 7-10 here in gamespot. I'm glad FFXII is on top. FF rules and so does PS2 :)

I don't really mind about the charts. FFXII is a worthy number 1, the only surprise is, for me, Crackdown. I hope people didn't buy it thinking they'd be getting the Halo beta as well... That would be a bit unlucky for them! I also am surprised at PES not doing better than FIFA. Everyone I know (even those who aren't "hardcore" gamers but I play football with) play PES now and don't even look a FIFA. Maybe it's because people now know PES 2/4 are the most fun.
