Nintendo investigating Wii U manufacturer after child labor admission
Mario maker looking into operations at Foxconn following the company's admission of utilizing children under 16.
Chinese manufacturer Foxconn, which is responsible for assembling the Wii U, among numerous other devices, has admitted to employing workers under the age of 16. In a statement to Reuters, the company said, "Our investigation has shown that the interns in question, who ranged in age from 14 to 16, had worked in that campus for approximately three weeks." This represents a violation of China's labor law.
As a response to this, Nintendo issued a comment to IGN, stating the company is launching an investigation into the findings.
"Nintendo is in communication with Foxconn and is investigating the matter. We take our responsibilities as a global company very seriously and are committed to an ethical policy on sourcing, manufacture, and labor," the company said.
Use of child labor is a violation of Nintendo's Corporate Social Responsibility Procurement Guidelines. In adherence with these guidelines, Nintendo must conduct regular on-site inspections of companies, like Foxconn, to check worker morale, interview administrators, and pore over records.
"If we were to find that any of our production partners did not meet our guidelines, we would require them to modify their practices according to Nintendo’s policy," Nintendo said.
Apple investigated Foxconn plant after a series of suicides (2 years ago) and they found nothing. They only care about their margins.
They asked Siri :
- "Are there any problems in our cheap Foxconn plant ?"
- "No Sir, everything is fine, people are very happy here"
- "OK, back to Cupertino !"
Poor Chinese !
ms acer sony use them to i feel bad for having stuff from where they have kids work. i wonder who sega use to use because i have every sega console there ever was.
Not happy that it breaks the law... But perfectly happy to have people work for nothing as long as they're over that age... Gotta love the morals.
What the fuck is Nintendo, Apple, Sony and god knows who else that uses Foxconn to build their shit doing??!! Have none of these people got kids?? Disgusting
Why do companies and or people even bother pretending to be 'shocked' by news like this. This happens all the time in China and the companies and people continue to support China's manufacturing because they want stuff cheap. The sad truth is those kids probably need the money badly so their family won't have to move into a cardboard box.
So what about all the other electronics manufactured by Foxconn? I find it funny that Nintendo is being attacked over this when so many electronic giants use Foxconn...
Also if people were really concerned about this they wouldn't be buying anything made in third world countries(and China).
ArabrockermanX Scroll down the comment list a bit and you'll see my post listing all the companies that I found to be using Foxconn.
Nintendo is big on family-freindly gaming, no so big on the family-freindly manufacturing.
Suikogaiden What are you talking about? They have the entire family involved! that sounds like it's family friendly to me.
I bet most of the child labour is on the Apple side of things making overpriced and crappy iPhones,iPads,iPods.
Nice to see Nintendo speak out about this, hopefully the other companies that are partnered with foxconn will speak out. However,
Japan has been dealing with economic issues for a while now.
The US and Europe has been dealing with their economies and unemployment. If they really cared about ethical conditions these companies would employ workers from their own country so they could not only deal first hand with the "ethical" manufacturing of their products but also help their country's economies.
They really only care about profits and avoiding bad press.
Nintendo, made for kids! Made by kids!
Nintendo motto should be : For Kids.By Kidsjake44
>like Foxconn, to check worker morale, interview administrators, and pore over records.
>worker morale
>Foxconn
>morale
Not exactly that surprising, child labor isn't that uncommon in the world. At least nintendo is trying to do something.
C'mon Nintendo I want to respect you...
Hellhound30x is this not Foxconn's fault or have I misread the article?
badstyle My comment was meant like this. "DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT NINTENDO!" get it?
Hellhound30x It would appear that they now know this to be the case and are imposing their policies accordingly. It is China's government which need to do something about it. get it?
badstyle ooooh... well lets see what happens, GET IT?
Hellhound30x I'm sure none of this will impact on supply - unless Nintendo wanted it to. But hopefully it will get sorted.
badstyle agreed! (=
they could make this work in their favor through smart PR. the new slogan : made by children, for children. jk
Halloll lol...
Chinese factories with dubious work ethics, you don't say?!
Good on them.
Foxconn also put together the XBox 360 and PS3 but you don't see Sony or Microsoft giving a crap. Where was all this press when those consoles were being made?
Oxo_64
Microsoft and Sony don't give a damn about who they step on to get profits, including underage children.
RabidBurp Oxo_64 or indeed their own customers *cough* data protection *cough*
RabidBurp Oxo_64 Well neither does Nintendo... They are only coming out and apologizing because the media decided to launch some selective attacks and they happened to be on the receiving end. If only Foxconn were being attacked or MS/Sony/Apple Nintendo would have ignored this.
As if they're actually going to do anything. Nothing matters as long as fat American children can get their electronics for cheap.
Interesting article.
The Reuters statement seems to read that there is no surprise @ Foxconn's end...
...
I could go on, but that would feel mute.
Growing population vs employment, is gambit we are in; globally now.
Nintendo in court: "It's natural to use child labor to make a game system for children, right? Right? Mama mia."
okassar These comments are so immature and ill-informed. I worry for the next generation.
As long as I get my Wii U, I don't care if Nintendo beat those kids. This is funny though.
exedeath Nintendo is not the one hiring kids, it's foxconn, a company also used to manufacture products for apple, microsoft, sony, toshiba, etc.
exedeath The only thing funny here is your complete ignorance.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha O Nintendo
Its actually ironic if you think about it. Kids in China, who probably never get to use a game console, make Products which kids in the US play with.
sad story no one should make children under the age work they should have the right to go school and have a education like everyone else, but working conditions in china is $1 per hour in labour for the adults isn't it?
sam628 money is relative - that $1 could probably buy more in china than in the US, but I know what you are trying to say...
I feel bad that kids have to work like this, but it's better than living on the streets with no pay at all. Living conditions in China are terrible, it's no wonder they cut corners to make ends meet.
Why do people even enter business with Foxconn any more? This isn't the first time there have been problems with working conditions in there factories. Need I remind you of the recent iphone 5 delay and the threats of suicide in the Foxconn Xbox factories?
At least they found a replacement for monkeys in their factories...
Nintendos new slogan should say "for children, by children."
Vodoo Yet, they are the ones saying it's against their policies...
I don't think anyone is the least bit surprised to learn this.
Foxconn are a typical Eastern/Communistic style company, with the one motto : It ain't wrong until you get caught.
farcorners
And here I thought everyone had some morals and weren't robots who had no emotion or feeling. How could anyone hurt a child, or bare to see them sad? I don't get it.
farcorners
eastern/communist companies??? How is western capitalism any different? In fact, aren't they just following our example of profit above morals? And aren't they mainly just supplying western countries with cheap products because that's all we give a shit about?
Note to those who want to stop supporting Foxconn and demand the companies are using overseas manufacturers to bring the work back to the U.S.
First off, you'll have to stop buying products from the following companies:Acer
Amazon
Apple
Cisco
Dell
HP
Intel
Microsoft
Motorola
Nintendo
Nokia
Samsun
Sony
Toshiba
Vizio
Secondly, you'll have to accept that dramatic increase in price of all products made by the above companies if they suddenly move their manufacturing to the U.S.
As a fun fact, the employees at Foxconn that work on the iPad assembly line make about $14 USD (about 87 Chinese YUAN) per day or $420 USD (2,610 YUAN) per month . After a couple of years working their, they get a raise to $24 per day.
The minimum wage in China in the Sichuan province (where Foxconn factories are located) is about 1001 to 1050 YUAN per month. So, at least for the iPad assembly line, they are getting double minimum wage. That's not too bad, in my opinion.
If the manufacturing was brought here to the states, consider the ratio between China's minimum wage and the US minimum wage for a factory worker. Where as $14 USD per day is fine over there, that'd be more like $72 per day here (at $9 minimum wage). Guess what that'll do to all those fun gaming console, Apple devices, etc?
Yeah, say goodbye to being able to afford any of that stuff.
