XCOM might have become a third-person shooter photo

Right now, all eyes are on XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and for good reason -- it's sounding surprisingly promising. But what of 2K Marin's first-person XCOM? As nice as it is to only have to focus on one of the two, I'm more curious about the latter game. There's so much we don't know about it.

The mystery deepens with screenshots and information taken from a marketing survey that were sent to Kotaku by a reader. Apparently, XCOM is still being worked on, though it has -- or is at least contemplating -- going third-person. Would such a shift even matter to skeptics?

Additionally, the survey asked how respondents would react to XCOM being sold digitally as a $29.99 download rather than a full-blown retail release. Now I'm even more interested in playing this.

The Other XCOM Game Might Now Be a Third-Person Shooter [Kotaku]

I think the original vision for this was fucking awesome and just had the misfortune of having the xcom name attached. Squad based is more my cup of tea though.

$30 download? I'd buy it, but that's a "pull the plug, get this POS out and recoup some of the cost" move. It's not surprising though. At least Enemy Unknown looks good.

I kind of liked the idea of it, I was never really in love with the original. I wonder if the fact that the recent Syndicate game(another classic RTS to FPS) selling horribly is kind of making them think twice about releasing the XCOM FPS. I think the XCOM FPS looks a lot more interesting than the Syndicate one was ever going to be.

The answer is that, if you're going to make a new thing, make a new thing. Don't make something new then attach some random old IP to it just because it's available. All you'll do is piss off old fans and screw up the expectations.

Does that map in the corner hint at a sandbox game?

Killias nailed it. Sad too, because Syndicate was a cool game and would have been a good start for a new ip.

Original trailer for this was amazing; get in, do the job and escape etc. (a bit like MGS Ground Zeroes it seems) but then they went all generic with it which was disappointing, would love to see it revived in a better form.

Bummer. That original concept was FUCKING FANTASTIC.
To bad all the shitty forums on the internet exploded over a re-imagining even though Enemy Unknown was already in development.
I just hope that all the super weird geometric stuff and mystery is still there

Now, I don't know if anyone remembers that first trailer of first person X-Com, but it was basically "Hey gaiz, we made Bioshock again".

And whilst Bioshock was good, Bioshock 2 proved that it lost it's lustre the second time around.

That was one of the problems with it, beyond "we have slapped this old name that we think people recognise onto our game because we know we couldn't sell it on its own merits", it was clearly just 2K Marin copying other people's homework again, this time with the names rubbed out.

And then they made the second trailer, and it was "Hey gaiz, we made Mass Effect, but first person".

I actually thought this looked kinda cool. I mean, boo to the third person shooter part in general, but maybe the cool aesthetic and shit would soften me up.

honestly X-COM would work as a Full Spectrum Warrior/Valkyria Chronicles with shooter flair(tactical version of Borderlands?) mixed with base building and management. frankly that's what i thought X-COM would become after 2K said they're adding more strategy elements.

guess not.

Third person could be a little more tactical, I suppose. Could be better that way.

I don't think it really matters. To me the only practical way to save that game would be to do the obvious thing and change it's name so it's an original IP instead of an unmitigated betrayal. Do the RE 4 -> Devil May Cry thing.

I'm more interested in this game than the strategy one. Third or first person is fine.

It makes more sense as this than as a first person shooter, but it still doesn't make any sense.

How much further can they dilute and dumb down this concept? We're rapidly approaching rock bottom by my estimations and budget title screams desperation to make a quick buck on their fuckup. Sad.

They just need to take the XCom name off this and rebrand it. Having that name wont get them any more buyers and will only piss off old school players. Get some washed up Sci-Fi hack to write you a 10 minute story and try again.

Rock Paper Shotgun showed some shots and it now looks like a 1940's Ghostbusters.

Ah well. I'll check that version out, but who gives a damn? ENEMY UNKNOWN NEXT WEEK. YEAHHHHH.

I thought it looked like Bioshock in a different setting. I was cool with that. I hope it comes out eventually.

I still don't care about it. No XCOM game can be a FPS. Look at C&C;'s FPS.
