This sort of thing. Never used them myself, though haven't run a marathon yet. If I'm on a long run I'll usually take some jelly babies / beans in case I feel like I'm flagging.

I only drink small quantities at a time and leave it a min between gulps buoy don't want to feel bloated. I agree with the drink if your thirsty idea.

I use the Science in Sport (SIS) Go gels about a quid each from Tesco or sports shop. Be careful with some gels as they can be quite thick and "gloopy" meaning you need a drink after them. I find the SIS Go ones ok in this respect.

I've been running 10 miles recently and certainly haven't felt the need for water yet. I kind of hope that I can do a half-marathon without it, if it's not too hot, but I haven't upped to tht distance yet to see. The race I'm aiming for is in late march/early April, so it shouldn't be too hot

Are these gels any good? I know you're supposed to hit 'the wall' about the 20 mile mark, but just wondered if topping up sugar levels might be a reasonable idea on a longer run.

I haven't felt any decrease in energy apart from the tiredness that comes with pushing your distances up beyond what you're used to.

I think I'm going to try and maintain fitness through the winter with a 10 mile run at the weekend, weather dependent, until Feb before the final push up to 13 miles.

Thanks chaps. You know, I'm not sure I've hit the wall yet. I've had moments towards the end where I've been waiting for it to end and I've wondered to myself "Oh, this must be the wall, cool!". Is 20 miles or so the accepted wall point is it entirely subjective to each individual? I'm hoping I can do 30k this weekend and hope too that the extra 10k in 4 weeks will be possible on the day given the large crowd and what not egging me on :)

    Hello all.

It seems like this will probably be a trivial question given some of the distances you're all running. I've just started to time my runs on the treadmill, and it's all very "baby steps" at the moment.

Anyway...question: What is a good time for someone to run 3k in?

I've read some forums elsewhere, but results are wildly different. Obviously a lot of you guys/gals are waaaaaaay ahead in terms of running exp, so this may not be the best place to ask.

If you're just starting out and can run the whole distance, I'd say around 20 minutes or so.

Yep, around 20 minutes would be a solid start. When you begin the main thing is building up some strength in your legs, so don't be too ambitious. Stick at it, and you can make progress fairly quickly.

Well...I'm pleasantly surprised at that suggested target.

It was my 3rd timed run last night and I managed it in 14m 11s. Glad that I'm slightly ahead of the curve!

Some of the other forums I've read stated I should be running in in 11/12 minutes for a beginner; which shocked me slightly.

    Thanks for the input folks.

11 minutes for 3km would be going at over 16kph, which is frankly insane for a beginner. That would be a 10k run time of 38.5 minutes, which is quick enough to in with a chance of winning competitive races at local competition level.

Yeah, that's very aggressive. If it get 5k in or around 25m I'm happy which is more or less the same a cptjohnnycasino's time.

Managed 28k on Sat morning, which was great \o/ Was bloody sore at times, had to stop and walk for a few mins twice (drink and slow down), and was super thirsty (though I'm not sure if that's because of the longer run or because I had a small amount to drink and it whet my appetite, as it were).

How do y'all survive without water? 20km without water sounds like a method of torture to me, I'll empty my 750ml bottle over the course of a 50 minute 10k easily, and be desperate to refill it and down it in one straight after finishing.

I just make sure I'm well hydrated before I set out and drink a fair bit during my pre-run warm-up / workout.

Anyone signed up for any races next year? Finally plucked up the courage to enter a marathon (two actually!). Got Milton Keynes in May and Loch Ness in September, probably run the Cambridge half marathon again too.

No, I don't think registration for the Yorkshire batch (Leeds half, Leeds/York/Hull 10k) usually opens until March or so, but I'll do them again. Don't think I'll be up for a full by next summer, maybe something to aim for in 2014. I've refocused my training for a while with more emphasis on strength and HIIT so I'd imagine my endurance cardio will be suffering over the next 6 months, but alas I had to pick one or the other.

I'm doing the London marathon in April. Slightly shitting myself but figure I've plenty of time to get ready. Managed a 15k on Sunday.

Like AP, I try to get as hydrated as possible early in the morning, leave it a few hours for it to pass through my system so I don't have to stop en route and then head out for my run. Unless it's I'm going for a run at work, which I only have time to run a bit over 5k, so I just fire out at lunch.

Registration opens for the local half-marathon and 10k in a few days time. I'll probably allow myself to be talked into the half-marathon, despite the race being at the end of march, so all training and the race itself could be flippin' freezing. I will also aim for a 10k in May, then who knows.

I'd still quite like to try a duathlon one of these days so may scour for any suitable ones over summer if I can get enough time on my bike.

Oh congrats on getting into London Cosmic, I'll try the ballot again next year but don't fancy my chances. Maybe I'll finish one of next year's races under 3:10 and get a good for age place... Heh, can't see that happening, I'll be happy finishing in 4 hours.

    @Zomoniac
Training wise, I'm trying to do something similar at the moment. Make sure I do at least one session of hill sprints a week now. Need to mix that up with some HIIT and fartlek too, but invariably just jog along at my slow steady pace for the most part... Definitely finding the hill sprints benefit my running in general though.

I'd quite like to do a duathlon as well, although I definitely need to work on my cycling. Another consideration was a team iron man event, but can't find anyone to do the swimming.

The swimming bit is why I won't even try a triathlon, I am not a strong enough swimmer. A mate started doing them 10-15 years back, but I never joined them when they asked me to give them a go.

I think he ended up spending ages in the pool at lunch to work on form, but I could do that everyday for years and still be pretty crap at that part.

Running and cycling I enjoy very much, swimming is for saving your life or mucking about on holiday IMO ! ;-)

Heh, that's exactly how I view swimming too. Have considered lessons to improve my form though...

I could cover the distance required for a regular triathlon I reckon (no chance the 3 miles for an iron man!), but would be so far behind at that stage I'd probably lack the motivation for the rest of it.

Yep, it's the trailing bit that'd get me too. I have swam a mile on a couple of times for charity, admittedly a looong time ago, so I could do the distance, but it took so long and I'd be so far behind that even with a decent run and cyle I'd be last by a long way.

Essentially, I avoid triathlons for the sake of my ego!

Me too! I did a duathlon (which got me into running) but could never do the swimming part and don't have the time to start that, focusing on running. Managed to get 5k in 18 minutes today!

Edit: Wait, silly Nike+ got my GPS wrong! Probably closer to 24 minutes after all. Still \o/

I'd just like to point out that I've been a hero over the couple of weeks. My girlfriend has been getting into running (which is a good thing), steady away 5k's in about 30 mins. I happily told her she could use my GPS watch, and I am remaining resolutely silent has my overall stats take a battering! Hero.

Ran Liverpool Marathon this morning and was finally delighted to clock an official sub 4 hour time. Yippee.

Chip time was 3:58:24 which was a 32 min improvement on last years painful attempt.

/strikes sub 4 hour marathon off bucket list/

Nooo. Get some good food in you and have an early night!

Anyone use the Galaxy S3 for Nike plus or running in general? Is it too big to run with strapped to your arm?
