DVR champs

CBS got off to a strong start this fall in terms of viewers recording its shows via DVR, On Demand and other “time-shifting” methods.

According to Nielsen’s just-released “Live +7” list for premiere week (Sept. 24-30), six of the week’s top 10 recorded shows aired on CBS, including “Person of Interest” and “NCIS” and freshmen shows “Vegas” and “Elementary.”

Live +7 measures viewers who record shows for up to seven days following an episode’s original airdate.

There were only two sitcoms in the Live +7 top 10 — ABC’s “Modern Family” and “The Big Bang Theory,” which added 31 percent and 25 percent additional viewers, respectively, via DVR, etc.

“What this tells you is that dramas have been on the forefront for the last several years . . . and there are more dramas on the air right now,” says industry analyst Marc Berman, editor-in-chief of TV Media Insights.

“There are still comedies that work, but dramas are getting more DVR usage and are a hotter ticket.”

For instance, NBC’s new post-apocalyptic drama, “Revolution,” added nearly 5 million Live +7 viewers to its premiere numbers — a whopping 53 percent increase — while “Hawaii Five-0” added 3.3 million viewers via time-shifting (a 41 percent uptick).

Also on the list (but not in the top 10) were the NBC drama “Grimm” — which increased its viewership 55 percent with DVR recording added in — and Fox’s “Glee,” which clocked in with a 54 percent viewership increase via Live +7 recording.
