In lieu of the recent Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary celebration, GameSpot Asia's Jonathan Toyad brings up the most renowned character archetype of the series and explains why we love them so much.

Sephiroth screams archetype. Fanboys can argue he's a badass and could squish the universe with his hand, but, honestly?
pronounciation: archetype = Arrr-KEH-TYPE. :/ .... oh well if we're talking about 9 and it's rip offery- I'd have to say Dragon Ball rips off Journey to the West. :/ You seem to be trying to group the more recent archetypes together minus Mist00 's strong female character archetype, there's also the monster types that get repeated: chocobos, cactuars, tonberry(you even had one in your video!) and moogles! I liked the women have higher int than men to be able to cast all dat magic archetype >:/. I probably like Yuna and Garnet the best for female summoner characters. As for best male protagonist: for now it's Zidane, because he was theatrical in his ability, a leading man and learns to rely on friends over time when he's down. As for best supporting cast: for now it's 'leading man' Balthier (ALL THE BEST LINES!) and his best job class as Air-Pirate (airships ftw).
aikibabyseal You seem to misunderstanding Dragonball. That manga is SUPPOSED to be a parody of Journey to the West. that's the point of the manga. I totally agree about Balthier though. And lol at Vaan having nothing to do with the plot whatsoever after, like, the sky city, the name of which escapes me at the moment.
I for one understood everything; to all those who didn't understand just didn't try to understand. To the topic at hand i think you are missing the strong female character archetype.

The biggest problem I have with FF games is that I can't tell if my character is suppose to be male or female.

urgh. i almost cry when i heard the FFX theme song. so many good memories.
i'm not a hardcore FF fan myself but i have been playing FF game starting from 7 till 13. My most fav is FF10, and my least fav is FF13. what bout u guys?
IMO, all FF game series are good but still, all of em have their own flaws - such as FF7-great story but the graphic in not so good (but great at it's release time); FF10-great story and all but the voice acting (ENG ver) is not so good and FF13 that have great graphic but crappy story and character presentation.

Can't really point out a favorite Archetype but I can say that Vivi is my personal favorite FF character.
I still think Lightning is the best female lead in the series.

God almighty am I sick of Cloud and Sephiroth. Also, at VaanX, I didn't see what the big deal was with Balthier at first when I watched my brother play XII, but then I played War of the Lions. Holy crap.

john691 Cloud and Sephiroth are great in their contrasts. I used to think Sephiroth was the greatest villain, but upon replaying FFVI, I realized Kefka was stark raving mad, and the most diabolical villain. But who is the hero of FFVI? that is probably the most difficult one to decide (outside of FF1, FF3 and and maybe FF2 which all featured undeveloped characters).
But a very special place resides in my heart for Cecil and Golbez as the hero/villain... like Sephieroth, Golbez is not the true villain... This was the first FF game I beat, and I have many fond memories of this game. Doing the quest to get Edge, I was listening to Aerosmith's Get a Grip album, and the instrumental song, Boogie man, now goes hand in hand with that portion of FFIV. I can play one without thinking of the other. What a great song. It is so moody and brooding, it really fits the Eblan Cave quest of the game... it could easily replace the theme music for that part of the game.
But the crystals theme from the final fantasy series is pretty darn good too. Aerosmith should cover it.
Wow, mega-SPOILERS in this video and comments below. The writing for Vivi was superb and should be in a category all by himself for awesomeness. Also, missing is the "loveable-rogue" archetype e.g Balthier, Zidane, Locke Not many of them though

Well if there's a category for "guys with tragic romances" I'd give a nod to Locke from FFVI. Not quite in the emo category with Squall and Cloud since he manages to manage himself pretty effectively.Still one of my favorite characters from the Final Fantasy series.
you know what i am still palying Final Fantasy VII And VIII in pc, awesome games made ever, i don't think they can make game like this again.. most playable games at that time...

And for my two cents, I think Toyad is great, he's written better articles then anyone else on this site. And jesus, if you can't understand him, then you must have your own problems with the english language.
