New Super Mario Bros. 2 sells 295,000 units in September
Nintendo reveals new US sales milestone for portable Mario game; 3DS software sales rise 89 percent year-over-year; Super Mario 64 DS reaches 5 million sales.
Research group NPD revealed yesterday that New Super Mario Bros. 2 was September's fourth best-selling game in the United States. Now, Nintendo has provided specificity, saying the game shifted 295,000 units during the month.
Nintendo also said Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D all saw sales increases compared to last month. Overall, total 3DS software sales jumped 89 percent compared to this time last year, Nintendo said.
Lastly, Nintendo announced that Super Mario 64 DS has now sold more than 5 million units in the United States alone. It is the third Nintendo DS game to reach this sales milestone, joining New Super Mario Bros. (10.6 million) and Mario Kart DS (8.5 million).
Total US September software sales dropped 14 percent to $547.3 million. Madden NFL 13 was the best-selling game of the month, followed by Borderlands 2 and FIFA Soccer 13.
this goes to show everyone that nintendo still dominates in sales with mario, zelda, mario kart, and anything mario related. people love mario and the WII U is going to dominate bigtime. im a ps3 player, but nintendo just knows what works and with 3ds XL selling like hotcakes, nintendo is going to take over again. wii u is sold out everywhere
new money for old rope. Nintendo is very fortunate.
I wasn't really bothered by NSMB2 since it didn't really offer me much of a change from NSMB. But I will definitely be picking up NSMBU. I just feel very excited for that version for some reason. So I'll see you guys in the Miiverse!
kavadias1981 NSMB2 is actually pretty fun for what it offers. But I wouldn't pay full price for it if I were you. Wait until a price drop or pick it up used after a couple months have gone by.
Seeing first party titles hogging the limelight isn't going to please third party developers. However, it looks like they will be getting a much better deal developing for Wii U, so hopefully we will see more of them taking the top spots in the future.
Nintendo should try coming up with better names. Putting "New" or "U" in the names of so many titles is just not creative.
CivilizedPsycho I mean they named everything Suoer ___ and ____64..... They still sold things
RPG_Fan_I_Am CivilizedPsycho yep thats because it WORKS. i know it pisses you off because you hate nintendo but really, your in the minority here buddy. such a hater. good job nintendo
CivilizedPsycho yeah you should really tell the nintendo business partners that and see how they laugh you out of the room because nintendo is making billions with "U" and "NEW" lol. obviously your just jaded.
I so want to get this game. :(
Just bought a 3DS XL, it's awesome. I'm not surprised Super Mario 64 DS is still selling well, now with the big screen and the analog stick it's much easier to play.
LordelX i just got the XL, never owned a ds and its awesome, paper mario im looking forward to. zelda 3ds is beautiful.
Aaahh. What a change of pace from not knowing if the 3DS would be a successful portable or if it would break Nintendo's perfect portable streak.
Now it's all good and relaxed, for the 3DS is well on its way up.
While I did not get this game because it didn't offer much content and it is $40 (I am trying to save up for Wii U, Halo 4, and other things), I still think it is a good game to pick up if you are new to Mario games. The game's concept was on the right track, but it could have offered a little more content and more original levels.
Otherwise, good job with the sales, Nintendo.
I'm happy to be one of those 295,000 people. It may not be the best Mario in the the world, but it was good for what it offered, and I had fun playing it.
Now if only Nov. 18 would come sooner so I can get New Super Mario Bros. U down my pants.

The thing I hate about Nintendo games is how they NEVER drop down in price.
I could wait until the end of the 3DS's life cycle and the games would still be full price.
Hell, even Call of Duty games drop down faster than Nintendo's....and people go nuts over Call of Duty...
DiverseGamer I hate that as well. Even when the games go on sale on sites like Amazon, they're still a bit pricey.
But I guess it's because Nintendo doesn't seem to believe in price drops half the time.
DiverseGamer
My guess would be because Nintendo never devalues their games with new releases. If you think about it, what game has Nintendo released that has ever rendered the previous entry obsolete or even "less fun?" especially with their main franchises. With Super Mario Galaxy 2, when I beat it 100%, all it made me do was want to go back and 100% beat Super Mario Galaxy (which I'm still in the process of doing). Skyward Sword made me want to go back and play all the previous Zelda entries I missed.
Granted there are other amazing games out there from other publishers but many of them follow a continuum which pretty much requires you to play previous entries if you want to get the full experience. Never played Assassin's Creed but I want to get the 3rd one? I'm going to have to play through the first 4 games if I want to completely understand what's going on and have the full experience, same with Mass Effect, Uncharted, Gears of War.
Plus it's really only Nintendo's AAA titles that don't see a price drop for a long time and those usually come out no more than once a year in general.
abHS4L88 You don't have to play previous games in the Uncharted franchise to understand the story line of each individual game. Their are little nods to previous titles and characters that carry over, but you would have absolutely no trouble following the events of, say, "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" if you haven't played "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" :)
Nick_Atreides abHS4L88 I think the reason they don't drop their prices is because they continue to promote their games long after release i.e through various forms of advertising, bundles, promotions, etc, in order to keep the game selling for months or even years. Whereas other developers release their games and then abandon them. To Nintendo, their games are always new to whoever hasn't played them yet. The release date is irrelevant.
kavadias1981 Nick_Atreides
Yeah, if you notice, they're still promoting Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 3D, MarioKart 7, and Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS.
abHS4L88 Nick_Atreides Exactly. It is far cheaper to promote sales of a game for as long as possible, than it is to make new games. It's good business. But that's Nintendo for you.
Good to hear, I didn't purchase the game though- I'm sick of Mario side-scrollers for now.
awesome game, left me wanting more... but ill have more once I get my wii u next month with nsmbu ;D
Bangerman15 NSMBU is looking like it will be the best of the New Super Mario Bros. series. HD graphics and it looks like a spiritual successor to Super Mario World, which I still think is the best Mario game ever made.
Superzone
I know that world map looks pretty awesome! hopefully its long and that new speed rush mode is as fun as it looks
Bangerman15 Superzone
I can't wait to see how well I do with my sister constantly trying to eff me up XD
abHS4L88 Superzone haha that multiplayer can get pretty hectic, its easy to troll people by jumping on them so they fall off lol my nephew and I always did that to each other
Ahh, Super Mario 64 DS. My first DS game (got it free when I bought my blue DS back in 2005). Good times with that, I remember being blown away by the fact that I was playing a 3D game on a handheld. At the time, that was just insane!
Mario's been stagnating a bit lately, but you can't go wrong with his games overall. :)
I kind of have to agree with Tremblay. RPGs get dogged all the time for never changing mechanics. People always joke how CoD or Fifa can just take the old game and change the date. But these "new" mario games that are so dated that they make sliced bread look like a recent invention are still doing these kind of sales. Go figure. Mario has some fine games in the series, but there needs to come a time when just putting the character in a game (cough olympics games) does not sell the game on that facet alone.
kiramasaki
You do know those Olympic games are made by Sega right? New Super Mario Bros. 2 is probably the only entry in the franchise so far that doesn't push gameplay that much. Wii brought multiplayer and Wii U is expanding on that multiplayer along with adding more variety.
kiramasaki Not trying to be rude towards you, but I do not think you can compared the Mario mixed games (Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Soccer, Kart, Minis, Puzzles, Dr., etc) with the Mario main series (2D and 3D) of games.... They are by nature different games that only share one thing in common, the Mario brand. Moreover, some of this games are straight license agreements between Nintendo and other developers, meaning that in some of the games Nintendo have very little input on them.
It is an unfortunate and brilliant business decision from Nintendo to add the Mario brand to many games....
* It is brilliant, because everyone recognize the Mario brand and it helps (not all the time) boost the game sales. ;)
* It is unfortunate, because maybe Mario does not need to be the face of every single mix game that is out there.... which brings me to the previous point.
Not defending Mario nor I am bashing Sports games, COD and/or (J)RPGs (which I play them a lot), but I do not think it is that bad the way Nintendo has kept releasing the "main" Mario game series, and they "usually" add to 1 to 2 max per home console; with the oddity of the NES of having 3 games for it, and the Wii with 3.
You mention that the "new" Mario games are so dated, but there is a reason they kept it like that, and that is to appeal to the old school retro gaming. Since the SNES (with Super Mario World), Nintendo did not release another 2D Mario game from the main series on a "home" console until the NSMB Wii and that new series started on the DS console.
I understand your point, but there is always going to be a love-hate relationship when it comes to supply and demand for the Mario games: *** Nintendo is blamed for releasing a Mario game and they are blamed for not releasing a Mario game ***
How are the headphones sales along with all those Super Mario 64 sales?
Who cares, this is what Mario is all about. Simple saving princess story, followed with cool plat forms. Also note that its not like Nintendo hasn't changed Mario games with mario 64, and Galexy. The 2D version is meant to follow the old style.
Thunderbear24 Yeah but how long can you really play the same thing. I've been playing 2d mario games for a while. And what was awesome about the ds one was that it had been a loooong time since the last one. Now the "new" series sees a new release almost every year.
I honestly don't think this last one was necessary at all. It's the same game but now you get the "pleasure" of grinding for a million coins. How innovative.
I'd take super mario 3D Land over that same old same old any day.
Tremblay343 All the Mario games are essentially the same concept, with minor variations. Get over it. Game looks great, and I love the emphasis on coin collecting-- that's what it's all about, right?
Tremblay343 Thunderbear24
No offense, but you fail to mention that those NSMB games are being released on different platforms.
NSMB for DS (2006).
NSMB Wii for Wii (2009).
NSMB 2 for 3DS (2012).
NSMBU for WiiU (2012).
I do agree that 3D Land felt way better than the NSMB2, since the later one had a grinding factor to it that was a little shallow and not challenging in a gameplay sense; however it is not a bad Mario game and still manage to bring some different in the series.
Tremblay343 Thunderbear24 And essentially all FPSs, RPGs, fighting games, strategy games and sports games are the same. Aim at the guys and shoot, or pick attacks and wander around towns, or smash button combos etc.
Some people get bored by the 2nd game while some enjoy even the 10th episode.
I would have to see how its sales "legs" would be like for New Super Mario Bros. 2, as I expect it to sell very well in the long term even with competition with the Wii U version coming up next month.
and i do not want any nintendo game to pull a cod or resident evil or goldeneye reloaded , sorry game isnt broke they shouldnt fix it
gamebuyer22 it is far from a rehash , id like you to look at cod thats a rehash , nothing is different about it
All this shows is that rehashes with no imagination sell.
gamebuyer22
That's already been proven a long time ago with Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and Tony Hawk, your point? Or are you just trying to find an excuse to hate on Nintendo?
