New Gaikai site teases Uncharted, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid

Updated website for Sony-owned streaming company hints at support for new first- and third-party franchises.

Since Sony completed its $380 million acquisition of Gaikai in July, little has been heard of the cloud-gaming company. Now, that has changed.

Gaikai has launched a redesigned website that teases support for a range of franchises like God of War, Uncharted, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect, and LittleBigPlanet

Representatives from Sony and Gaikai were not immediately available for comment.

Established in 2008 in Aliso Viejo, California, by David Perry, Gaikai enables game streaming to a variety of devices via the Internet. As part of its acquisition announcement, Sony said combining Gaikai's technology with Sony's game platform will provide users an "unparalleled cloud entertainment experience."

Interesting.  Perhaps this is the future - at  least for sony.  Playstation as a subscriptions service rather than a hardware brand?.  Interesting and in line with some of the noises coming out of Sony in recent months. Obviously only viable in certain territories due to broadband speeds and not realistic as a worldwide distribution network but in a number of years who knows.....Perhaps we'll see some generic hardware/protocol and we'd all just subscribe to the Nintendo/Xbox/Playstation/Apple channels as our preference takes us.  For now though, it's Steam for me.

I am excited to see how Sony uses the Gaikai service. I'd like to see PS3 games available for PC and the other way around. Not that streaming is the best way to go or the way I would choose. But when it comes to playing demos or renting, a streaming service seems fit for that.

I've never seen the Gaikai Logo before today. There's potential for a lawsuit against Microsoft for having a similar 4 blue squares as their new Windows 8 logo. The main difference is that the 2 lower squares in the Gaikai logo are smaller than the top.

Still not interested in streaming. Never will be. I don't want to be forced to stay online while playing, or play single-player games with latency, or be without games when their service is down, congested or hacked.

Albaficas  Ladiesman17 He is quite right though, the service makes no sense. At best it's there for people who don't want to waste HD space? At worst if you have no connection or a slow connection or bad DL limits then it's an unattractive proposition. At best they've paid to provide a service that quite a few fans won't use and those that do would probably be better served just with a download of the game.

Just ask yourself, what is the benefit of streaming? As stated it saves space, what are the negatives? Well, you could end up not even being able to play them when your internet is down or have a laggy experience which isn't really what most want. For multiplayer games I don't think I'd want to touch a streaming service.

Sigil-otaku  Albaficas  Ladiesman17 Benefits are simple. Server-side gaming requires fewer hardware upgrades, which is money passed on to the consumer. Think about it... the shelf life of your next PS could be much longer, since graphics will improve as Sony updates their hardware. Tired of console tech falling behind PC? Me too.

Albeit lag issues are a real concern... but a few years down the road.. who knows? This technology is very promising.

yalta_basic  Albaficas  Ladiesman17 Hardware upgrades on a console? At best you'll swap out your hard drive but for console gaming streaming is a poor service because at most you'd need to upgrade your hard drive to get more space but compare that to the inconveniences of using a bad system and it's just a choice which you'd rather do but for most I'd have thought the hard drive upgrade would be a smarter choice. This is especially true since if you're running out of space it means you can't buy any more downloaded games, you might have issues with large updates or other things so it becomes a necessity anyway where cloud gaming still remains the inefficient and roundabout way of doing what you are doing anyway (gaming).

I seriously doubt Sony will be in the habit of creating PS4.5 halfway through the generation just so people can have moderately better graphics. It's possible but then they'd have to make hundreds of new machines just to support the old machines using tons of bandwidth (more strain and cost on there own servers). It's an interesting idea but something tells me it will not happen, when have console designers ever decided they should give us a free console upgrade? We'll end up paying more to stream the new games or we'll just end up not getting any upgrade. Consoles aren't designed to be just upgraded, they are designed to be strong on release and last years with customised hardware that suits the job, by doing this they either give us that and we don't need the streaming or we have a forced weak system just so we can stream higher end games from stronger systems but Sony wouldn't benefit from having to make 2 systems  just to let us have a laggy experience. I'd jump to the next xbox and the Wii U if they wanted to force a system like that on me.

Sigil-otaku  Albaficas  Ladiesman17 Not sure what you mean by cloud gaming is round about and inefficient. Graphics are rendered server-side, and the client is stored offsite. As a a result, less steps are required by us to access high quality content. The only thing needed is an internet connection. Pretty awesome stuff and definitely not inefficient.

I don't think anyone here fully understands how Gakai's technology will  be incorporated into the PS4. If at first, an older game library is available through Gaikai - then cool. You understand - there is 0 download time with this service, right? It's pickup and play. Forget storing stuff locally on your hard drive - who cares? The only issue is your connection. If you don't have a broadband connection - then I'm sure there will be other means to enjoy games.

Finally, I don't see how you think it will cost more to stream games in the long run. Of course we can anticipate a monthly fee for the service. But look at a company's savings using this technology - manufacturing overhead, distribution, labor - all of this will be cut significantly. This results in less cost for us - a huge competitive advantage for those wielding the technology.

Again, none of know what the PS4's final specs are, but I sure hope the system is designed to take full advantage of server-side gaming.

Ladiesman17 Gaikai's streaming quality was much much better than Onlive's during our demo last year. Even on wireless connections.

Sigil-otaku 121 pts

Albaficas own it with cloud gaming? Lol, why would anyone want that service? It's like saying, okay you have a console, but don't buy the console to play games directly, buy it to stream games in an impractical way that delivers a worse experience.

Digital distribution is basically the same thing, only you don't worry about lag, you don't worry about not being able to play your games when the internet is down (or say you take it to a friends and they don't know there WEP key or whatnot, you know, little inconveniences) and you don't worry about whether you're going to see a problem in multiplayer gaming. A cloud service for games is a bad idea and at best will give you the inconveniences I stated and at worst will be unplayable. Such as what happens when PSN is down for maintenance?  Or hacked? Or just has some random error / your connection is being funny or you're running close to your bandwidth limit (I have unlimited broadband but not everyone does)? Just more worries, cloud services are just an impractical and unappealing way of gaming. I wouldn't mind cloud saves for when my PS3 breaks and it operates as a backup but compared to digital distribution a streaming service is just a poor option. You may as well just own your games and play them on your system as that affords the least potential issues. If they want to make gaming more annoying, more prone to issues and less easy to manage (i.e. you'll have more games in more places because you'll have your retail games, your hard drive stored games and now your stream service games). It's just more messing around and more problems to put up with a worse system.

@Sigil-otaku @Albafica Sony is just trying to grow or expand their porfolio and covering more ways to deliver their product & services to bring more consumers and mantain those who are comfortable adopting this way it doesnt mean will be the only way to play or sony release games at least not in the near future. set an example I belong to a generation where we need to play on a physical format to feel that we re really receiving something in exchange from our money otherwise we feel cheated i dont found value in digital games and their advantages are mínimum to none for me i only make use of them when really a game doesnt exist in earth any more or were created to be acquired just on that way. theyre just preparing for the future of gaming. i really hate the display of GS in sphones
