Halo 4 pirates facing permanent XBL bans?
Microsoft reportedly issuing permanent bans over "illegitimate prerelease title play"; 343 calls leak predictable, and encourages users to "exercise caution" to avoid spoilers.
Gamers caught playing a pirated version of 343 Industries' new shooter Halo 4 potentially face a permanent ban from Xbox Live. That's according to one Reddit writer, who posted an email from Microsoft informing the user that "illegitimate prerelease title play" has yielded a permanent Xbox Live account suspension.
A Microsoft representative provided GameSpot with the following statement.
“We are aware of isolated cases in which 'Halo 4' content has been propped on the Web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation immediately. Consumers should be aware that piracy is illegal and we take vigorous action against illegal activity related to our products and services. Playing pirated copies of games, such as Halo 4, is a violation of the Xbox Live Terms of Use and will result in enforcement action, such as account and console bans.”
Writing on the official Halo website, 343 Industries warned of Halo 4 leaks, and said it was "working closely" with security teams and law enforcement to address the situation.
"Piracy is illegal and we are taking vigorous action against it," reads a line from the statement. "We have poured our blood, sweat, and tears into Halo 4, and we want you to have the best possible experience with our game, come November 6. If you’re interested in staying spoiler-free, we encourage you to exercise caution when visiting various websites, social networking services, and forums."
Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor suggested to Polygon that the leak was not very surprising to begin with.
Halo 4 is due out worldwide November 6 exclusively for Xbox 360. It is the first numbered entry in the series developed outside of Bungie Studios and will not feature Kinect support for gameplay.
Ban them? How about calling the cops, getting a warrent, and charging these people with petty theft if they have the game on their XBox?
Do permanent bans really work? Can't people just get new consoles and make a new gt.
jpm1276 But that doesn't make a lot of sense does it. What costs more. A single game, or a new console and XBL membership?
Also any Arcade games and DLC purchased under the gamertag will be lost as well (unless they want to play offline).
Not to mention the cost of time. Any achievements earned on the banned gamertag will be lost and have to be unlocked again.
If anyone planning to pirate the game doesn't think any of that matters, *shrug* that is fine, but for me that wouldn't be worth the risk. Not for a single game. Not for $60 saved.
If only they had as much passion in stopping cheaters as they do pirates. To them, cheaters are alright, pirates not so much. I hope this game fails.
blastmaster2k2 So because they do not have "as much passion," according to you, in stopping cheaters as they do pirates, they must think that cheaters are alright and pirates are not, and so because of this unbased accusation the game should fail? First off, please explain to me what you mean by "cheaters," what your plan would be in stopping these "cheaters," how Microsoft does not have "much passion" in stopping them and what that passion would look like, and what the connection between Microsoft choosing to ban players because they pirated copies of an unreleased game and that 343 Industries' game should fail because of it is please. Thank you.
blastmaster2k2 You're right, I've heard them say many times, on record, that "cheaters are alright". I believe Frank even had it tattooed on his arm. In fact, so strong is their belief in this motto, that the first 10,000 cheaters in the game will receive all the DLC for free. And not just for Halo 4 but for every Microsoft game ever made until the end of time.
Cortana Dies... yup, that's pretty much all you need to know.
I'm not going to lie, I get my torrents every now and then, but I don't like spoilers weather for games or movies. i know most Halo fans wouldn't want to spoil part 4 by playing some half assed pirated version of the game.
How the hell do you let Halo 4 get pirated?
mr-gadgets Agreed on the spoilers part, whether it's games, movies, or TV shows. And it's extra difficult for me because I'm not the type that usually gets games or sees movies/TV shows as soon as they are released. So I have to be real careful whom I talk to and which sites I visit if I don't wanna know too much.
Any true XBOX 360 pirate should be well aware of the risks associated with playing a pirated game. Especially the risks of playing before release date and certainly with playing online. This is no more than 343's attempt at scaring away new pirates. And it will work for a lot of people.
Hey, how old is Eddie Makuch, anyway? I'm not trying to be mean here, but the kid looks about 9 in his thumbnail pic. And the line about how he "loves extra chunky peanut butter." doesn't help.
This article basically has 1 sentence of new information repeated several times over a few paragraphs. And guess what; the info was in the headline.
So these fools not only played the game on their connected systems well before it was released, but then they went online for some sweet multiplayer action? Exactly what did they think was going to happen?
A piracy-free world? Screw that.
It'll never happen.
Here's what a friend did... one xbox where he plays only original "authentic" games with live connection and all, another he got from ebay for 50 euros that never connects to the internet that he plays... not so original games on... he tries them on that and if he likes them he purchases them for the other one... so they can ban all they like piracy is a war they will never win... for every key there's a lock and for every lock there will be a key... piracy isn't even the true problem, their pricing and services is the problem...
and I a correct.
DespVand If your friend can afford to buy a second console -- even a used one -- then I'm guessing that he can afford to buy games legitimately.
Based on what he wrote, it sounds like his buddy DOES buy games legitimately. He 'tests' them first on the modded system, then IF THEY ARE WORTHY of $60, he purchases them for thorough enjoyment on his unmodded system. If the alternative is not buying games at all for fear of getting a bad game, I'd say that this is GOOD for the industry. Besides, they've already proven that second hand game sales hurt the industry worse than piracy, so would you rather his friend did that?
Stabba_The_Kutt First, there are too many demos available for me to believe that anyone needs to bootleg a game in order to "test" it these days.
Second, buying bad games is part of the risk of gaming. It's part of the reason that review sites like this one do so well. I'm less interested in what any individual thinks of a game than I am about getting an overall impression of the game.
Third, I haven't seen any proof that used games are hurting people's bottom lines. I've seen lots of bellyaching about it, but nothing that I see as proof of it. My guess is that bootlegging (read, potentially infinite copies) takes a much bigger bite out of the bottom line than second-hand sales (read, finite copies).
Finally, I should have put every mention of the so-called "friend" in quotation marks. We all know that there's no "friend" here.
PS -- Ultimately I don't care what any one person does. I just don't see the point of trying to justify bootlegging as good for the industry.
Piracy is a crime and should be punished, but the punishment should fit the crime and I wonder if a ban is hard enough. At least they're doing something.
The piracy issue and people's opinions about it are complicated. Some pirates/those who support piracy might say: "If you didn't want us to pirate it, you should have protected it better" (excellent reasoning which completely justifies theft/sarcasm). The consequence of piracy then leads to DRM, which annoys both paying and pirating gamers. Some pirates/those who support piracy then say: "Damn, I hate this DRM bullsh*t! I'm gonna pirate it just because it has DRM". The companies could then say: "If you didn't want us to add DRM, then you shouldn't have pirated it." The companies' "If you didnt..." reasoning makes much more sense than the pirates' argument, but no one, paying or pirating gamer, acknowledges that (or perhaps it's drowned under the raging pro-piracy comments). Anyway, DRM seems useless, but if there was no DRM (if it was removed or never added), pirates would simply say "If you didn't want us to pirate it, you should have protected it better" and the vicious cycle begins anew.
I disagree. Piracy shouldn't be PUNISHED. People who make legitimate purchases should be REWARDED.
Furthermore, sites like pirate bay should have to donate a significant portion of their profits to some sort of an industry recognition fund, which would allow developers to see a bit of money from their own pirated software. I know this isn't a perfect solution, but pirates are going to pirate, and the developers are the ones who deserve the $$. Unfortunately, they see such a small portion of the proceeds even from what you would call legitimate sales, so don't expect money grubbing industry executives to make any concessions any time soon.
Good, ban them all.
Damn PC pirates ! Oh, wait...
well first off i have 2 xboxs and i got my account and my console banned for playing Call of Halo: 4, early. Im fine with having my console banned but since they decided to ban my account i found someone on kijiji and trade my xbox 360 slim for a ps3 slim. Smart move ms :) lol
drsedii
well god luck with messing with sony, they will ban your ass like geo hotz as well, permanent no account tied to psn if you mess with them, and probably worse since then, better quit down your path of self destruction. i can imagine a piracy charge would ruin your life pretty well for any technology job.
trolling me with your idiotic comments, self-destruction?? awesome :)
drsedii
make your move idiot, my histories are well documented in the system so good luck chump. that way if you wanna play games i will ruin you.
wizo59mt lol a tad bit emotional over a halo dont you think?
wizo59mt im just procrastinating studying for midterms lol, dont cry buddy :)
wizo59mt trolll!! emotional troll!!!
ps3 updates its fw to increase security, xbox 360? BAN BAN BAN! lol
drsedii
glad i can still play my xbox account, mightjust have to resurrect it for halo 4.
what the hell kind of punishment is this? banning? are they permanently banned from XBL via name and identity or just current xbox account? look at what the music industry does to pirates, why let this kinda greedy scum get away with a hand slap. if they steal this they will steal anything. make them feel the real sting and fine them a fedrel warning amount and ban them permanently by personal identity from all microsoft services based around xbox past, present and future.
wizo59mt why not send them to the gas chambers?
drsedii Good call.
who cares about the ban.....ill play this one offline and play the other DOZENS of FPS online........
IMHO - As usual before a BIG release there is a leak just for banning purposes... More people will buy new consoles as they will be banned - this way is much more profitable for microsoft... even at the cost of a great game - chasing pirates is just ineffective
They shouldn't have publicly said anything about bans, and just observed and issued bans silently. Now some reading this will be wary. That's a shame.
Piracy is pretty much the epitome of 'greed'. I don't care what reason anyone thinks they have to justify what is essentially, obtaining items of value without paying what is rightfully owed for them. Being impatient is no excuse. Wanting to try before you buy is no excuse. Being "poor" is an even worse excuse. You're not poor if you have ADSL with a large or unlimited data cap and a console or gaming PC. There are a million arguments to defend piracy, and they're all weak.
Go go Microsoft banhammer.
Sorry what was your argument against piracy ? Your getting something for nothing ? You realize that's a pretty obvious point and probably did not enlighten anyone right ? no offense.
dkdk999 Obvious, yes. It should be. But most pirates I've argued with over the years seem to think they are actually entitled, and label publishers "greedy" for expecting something as obvious as... revenue. Then there's the delusional stories and garbage statistics trying justify or prove in vain that piracy isn't impacting sales, or the "i wouldn't buy it if i couldn't pirate it", which misses the point completely. Its sad.
Lhomity so paying for online multiplayer isnt greedy..? lol how about paying for dlc? Hmm if you grew up in the 90s and gamed on pc youd be shocked to believe people are paying for both.
drsedii Lhomity
igrew up playing games in the late eighties and ninties and never have once felt the urge to pirate, and yeah i pay for my habits and addictions. drsedii you sound like scum imo.
wizo59mt Lhomity bahhhahaha your a clown kill yourself!
wizo59mt Lhomity i have 2 copys of battlefield, steam account loaded with games. I pay for GOOD games, Games i enjoy. Grow some balls and stop bitching about piracy.
drsedii Lhomity
bwahhha drsedii you ball havent even dropped yet, thats why you sit infront of game screen and eat high fructose corn syrup all day, you fat bastard, go learn what sex and for get about your games, pirate.
how did you know? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151060667924792&set;=a.430852814791.222644.855094791&type;=1&theater; fat indeed :) wizo59mt Lhomity
wizo59mt Lhomity all people who pirate halo 4 are fat evil fucks that are going to hell :D
drsedii A paid service like Gold doesn't constitute greed. If you don't like it, buy a PC, a PS3 or a Wii U.
The far cheaper, quicker and easier to develop, more expensive cartridge games, and far less sophisticated PC's of the 90s have nothing to do with what is happening in the real world today, and your dislike for being charged money for items of value is your own problem. (Yes, a piece of DLC is an item of value too, that costs time and money to develop, and please, spare me the shallow and greedy "it should have been in the game" argument.)
Lhomity How is wanting to try before you buy not a legitimate reason? Why should a company make money for tricking people through advertising into thinking their sub-par product is good? In this instance I don't see the point, but in general digital piracy is a good thing.
