Keep deadheading
Keep deadheading climbing roses and other repeat flowerers. Spray those that have mildew – they may be more resistant next year.
Slug vigilance
It is not over yet. Snails may be ceasing activities for the season but slugs are still on the march, demolishing autumn delphinium shoots and any seedlings they come across.
Bring inside
Houseplants (particularly citrus) that were “on holiday” outside should now be brought in. Check that no slugs and snails come in as passengers.
Plan for leaves
If you have a lot of trees, now is the time to get organised by making a new leaf pen. Posts and chicken wire are all you need.
Make space
Clearing ground around perennials still in flower may reveal weedlings and seedlings – and refresh the garden.
