What to do this week: planting bulbs and moving shrubs

Move shrubs
You can move shrubs now if you need to, but the night before you do so, drip a hose into the soil around their roots.

Autumn prep
A jumbo tip bag or plastic sheet makes border dismantling easier. Bag up the contents for later use as a soil-improver.

Divide perennials
Dig up and split perennials. Any new plants acquired during summer and potted on may now be big enough to split into two before planting.

Plant bulbs
Alliums and daffodils are best planted in September. If you aren’t ready to plant bulbs yet, buy them and store them somewhere cool and dark.

Keep deadheading
Don’t give up deadheading plants that still have more to give, i.e. repeat-flowering bush and climbing roses.
