Lots of moving and lots of shaking in the PlayStation world this week: New PSN games (including PS3-exclusive Derrick the Deathfin, PlayStation Mobile standout Rebel, Atari’s Warlords re-imagining), a new PlayStation Store coming soon, new details on PSN stunner The Unfinished Swan, new hands-on details for Street Fighter X Tekken on PS Vita, a delightful PSN platformer designed for two people, an October 30th launch date for PS Vita’s socially connected brain scrambler Smart As, first details on next week’s releases (Of Orcs and Men, Mugen Souls, a new Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus 2 Q&A, Halloween details for PlayStation Home, and a way for Ontario-based gamers to check out PlayStation’s campus tour.

You know how I always talk about having bacon and eggs on Saturdays? Well, now bacon and eggs have been replaced with working out and it sucks. At least I still have Sundays. Anyway, it’s time for the PSN Community Spotlight. For the unfamiliar, this is where PlayStation gamers tell their unique stories/experiences/thoughts, as submitted to this section in the PlayStation Community Forums. Those that make it all the way to the PlayStation Blog will receive a $50 PlayStation Store voucher.
Last week we asked about your PlayStation stories, and gamer RandomGuard wrote in to tell us about his Halloween tradition (plus a scary PSP game).

We’re packing up some of our favorite games this fall and hitting the road to bring you the PlayStation Varsity Challenge. We want you to come battle it out in a gaming tournament for a chance to win prizes, perks, bragging rights and the chance to compete in our final championship event in Spring 2013.
This year we’re featuring PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, LittleBigPlanet Karting, and NHL 13. Come out to play with PlayStation and our partners – NOS, Virgin Gaming and EB Games – to prove that you’re the best video game brawler, a first place karting champ or a hot shot hockey star.
Students outside Ontario – we’re sad we can’t visit you this year, but we’re looking forward to expanding our tour next year. Tell us where you are, and we’ll do our best to bring you the chance to compete.

Having made five shooters already, we at PomPom Games were rather conflicted. We had just agreed to spin a cheerful little number for PlayStation Mobile. We know how to make a decent shooter. I’m sure Sony were expecting us to do a shooter. And to be honest, I wanted to make a shooter. But my partner (Miles Visman) was like totally meh about it.
So, after 45 seconds of intense prototyping, Rebel was born – a game where you blow up loads of stuff without firing a single bullet. In a world where your enemies are just the right combination of stupid and armed… one can only enjoy oneself, right?
Here’s the basic idea. You are a nameless rebel prisoner. Using intricate gameplay mechanics (press “play”) you escape from your concrete prison.

Ah, Soul Reaver. I remember it well! This gruesome little gem made quite the splash when it landed on PSone in 1999. As the wounded, ostracized vampire Raziel, your goal was to avenge yourself against the corrupt vampire lord Kain and restore balance to the decaying world of Nosgoth. I particularly remember the game’s inspired approach to combat; your vampiric foes couldn’t be killed by ordinary means, so after weakening them with hand-to-hand combat you had to hurl their broken bodies onto a sharp stake or into a patch of sunlight to finish them off. The level design was also a knockout, as Raziel was able to phase-shift into a spectral realm in order to bypass obstacles or solve puzzles.
But above all else, Soul Reaver is remembered for its story and characters.

Hi PlayStation players, this is Sylvain from Cyanide. I’m here to give you an introduction to the world of Greenskins and humans.
Of Orcs and Men is an action RPG, taking place in a dark and mature universe where Greenskins (orcs and goblins) have finally been defeated after a long war against the human kingdom. The emperor has decided that, in order to prevent any further war against the Greenskins, it’s best to just commit full-on genocide — unfortunately for you, you’ll be controlling an orc and a goblin.
As the game starts, Arkail (the massive orc) and Styx (the stealthy goblin) are among the last of their race still alive. They are sent on a suicide mission – to reach the land of the humans and assassinate the Emperor, thus stopping the massacre and enslavement of greenskins.

I’m pretty darned pleased with today’s show, and at least 87% of the credit should probably go to Very Special Guests Mr. Gary Whitta and The Walking Dead Episode 4 Director Nick Herman. For the uninitiated, Gary Whitta is the former Editor-in-Chief of PC Gamer and writer of post-apocalyptic drama The Book of Eli and the upcoming After Earth.
