Five hot Christmas Xbox 360 releases you shouldn't overlook

Don't let blockbuster season blind you to the alternatives

In our CMS there is a "top site searches" feed. Often, it is a source of innocent wonder and amusement, such as when we notice that there's (literally) 10 times as much interest in Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition as there is for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Other times, it gives us headaches. Suffice to say, reader fascination with certain games is such that certain other titles are in danger of being ignored.

In a bid to restore the balance of nature, heal space-time, paper over the cracks in the continuum, etc, I've listed a few of the games that aren't getting their due. By all means stencil it on your bedroom mirror.

1. DMC Devil May Cry (15th January)

When it comes to exhilarating highs and depressing lows, no company touches Capcom right now. Where EA and Activision settle for straight-up annoying the hell out of people, the Street Fighter publisher's moments of disgrace unfailingly give way to moments of glory. This is the company that's most notorious for calling non-downloadable content "downloadable content". But it's also the company that's firmly committed to new IP in the shape of the wonderful Dragon's Dogma and Remember Me.

On the one hand, the willingness to let Ninja Theory experiment with the new Devil May Cry while giving them every opportunity to learn from seasoned Japanese designers. On the other, the decision to release it a fortnight after Christmas, when nobody has any pocket money left. It's a bit of a tragedy, because DMC Devil May Cry is shaping up be one of this generation's best fighting games, rivalling Platinum's equally controversial Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for speed and finesse. This shall not stand, people. For the love of all that's holy, pre-order the thing before you blow the university fund on presents for your so-called "loved ones".

2. Far Cry 3 (30th November)

This ranks horribly low on the search list, clocking in below Rocksmith and the currently underwhelming Medal of Honor: Warfighter, and that's an injustice wrapped up in a scandal wrapped up in a travesty. Allow us to paint the point in bold, readers: Far Cry 3 looks like one of the smartest shooters you'll ever play. As with older Far Cry games, it's a high mobility affair - there are ziplines, jeeps and hang-gliders to avail yourself of as you tour the tropical island setting, doing horrendous things to horrendous people armed with all manner of rusty gunnery.

But what makes this really interesting is the plot, a history of madness starring a deceptively resourceful basket case named Vaas, among other deranged regional despots. If it's "viscerality" you're after, rejoice - for you will soon be swallowing down hallucinogenic mushrooms that reverse gravity and setting tigers aflame. Mmm, char-grilled tigers. Or, if your chin craves a good hard stroke, consider Vaas's opening monologue representative of the script as a whole.

  1. I'm in for FC 3. I have had it pre ordered for months, given it was initially supposed to be out last month. Not really intrigued by any of the others and there are some other games i want to get anyway as well as some dlc i still haven't got.

  2. Also interested in far cry 3, not much else on the list though.

  3. xmas 15th january is not xmas release thats after xmas anything between now and xmas is a xmas release deeeeerrr

  4. Three outta' five 'aint bad Ed!

Got FC:3 and F1 on my radar. Already have Hell Yeah' on my PS3 courtesy of the amazingly good value of PS+......

  5. I'm fairly excited about the game, too, but doesn't "January 15th" pretty much disqualify DmC as a Christmas release?

  6. Slow news day lads?!

  7. Far Cry has been on my radar foe a while, despite rating Far Cry 2 as one of the worst gaming experiences of my life. If it had hit it's original release I'd have happily bought it right out the gate but moving it to the same release day as Assassins Creed? It'll have to wait I'm afraid.

And what do you mean slow news day? Talking about upcoming releases is what they are supposed to be doing?

  8. Never liked the DMC series and have a few reservations about Far Cry 3 but that is the only game on this list I am even slightly interested in. Given the fact that I have a very limited budget and so many titles to choose from anyway, Far Cry 3 may end up being a 2013 purchase....

  9. Far Cry 2 was one of the worst gaming experiences of your life?
    Are you joking?
It's one of the best games ever.

  10. Wow, different opinions...who'd have thunk it. (and he's a man who knows kendo, has a big stick and has a ginger girlfriend :P , don't bait him)

By what criteria? I found the travel a painful slog, the endlessly respawning enemies a chore and the fact that you could be spotted by someone from 200 miles away who was then capable of shooting you WHILST LOOKING THE OTHERWAY broken at best. Sounds like a terrible experience to me, but obviously you've got different taste.

  12. I'm in the FC2's shit camp, I thought it was utterly tedious.

FC3 looks promising... but then so did two...

Agreed, far cry 2 looked great but was a terrible game to play.

Personally i am waiting for NFS Most Wanted and Hitman

  14. I never had much trouble with two, except for the spawning bad guys.Plus i don;t think it was ever billed as a pure stealth em' up.They are bigging up that there will be a distinct way you can play 3 as in all stealth or all action.Just hope if that is the case they have sorted out being spotted from ten miles away.Although if evidence of the E3 vid. where he is using the bow stealthily and doesn't get spotted once is annything to go by hope that is the case.

  15. At least Devil May Cry is getting recognised by someone, every seems to still be blindly hating on it. I for one will be playing nothing else for a while once I get that gem of a game.

  16. xmas 15th january is not xmas release thats after xmas anything between now and xmas is a xmas release deeeeerrr

The 'christmas release window' has always included the first few weeks into the new year, so this article has it right.

    Deeeeeerrrr.

You know I've found the travelling and respawning enemies in Borderlands 2 a hell of a lot more annoying than in far cry 2, the difference being borderlands has co-op which makes things less annoying. An odd thing, really.

One of the best stories badly interwoven with characters on speed, and a lot of problems with AI, but I would say far cry is the best fps on xbox given the time. Bioshock might edge it actually.

  18. FC2 was good in some ways but the bad was worse than the good. Nice to see in all the video's iv seen of FC3 that they have put right were FC2 went wrong only ie checkpoints and enemy respawn and fast travel no more running 4 miles for a bus thank the lord

4 games for me Dishonored got it today MOHW Forza Horizon and of course FC3 been awaiting this for about a year now cant wait,,,

  19. I have to agree that i despised Far Cry 2 but Far Cry 3 has me very interested.

I also that anything released in January isn't a Christmas release.

  20. I also felt FC2 was a very disappointing game to play. The travel was tedious and the story wasn't overly compelling either. In the end I just completed the game (without collecting all Diamonds, Tapes and without completing all side missions too) just to finish it! I must say that FC3 does look more interesting but not enough to warrant purchasing on day 1

  21. Erm...the embedded far cry 3 video looked very impressive, but the opening 2 minutes were a MASSIVE rip off avatar. Pretty amazing actually, completely shamelessly ripped it off - the girls voice, the things she said, even her smile and facial structure, and the rallying of the troops may as well have been taken straight from the film. Bizarre

  22. Can't say I'm tempted by any of these. DmC may well get a look in at some point but I already have far too many single-player affairs to be getting on with as it is, and I didn't get to grips with DMC4 particularly well.

I've never played any Far Cry games so I can't throw my opinion into the ring there sadly.
