PlayStation.Blog Recap

Countries: , , , ,

Anyone been playing Resident Evil 6? Sounds like it’s pretty divisive! I haven’t found much time to jump in yet, but I’m really looking forward to doing so this weekend.

If you have been playing the latest entry in Capcom’s horror series, head on over to our exclusive interview with its creators for more on how the game took shape. Elsewhere on the Blog this week, we also heard from the clever folks behind the forthcoming HD version of the original Killzone, the producer responsible for keenly anticipated JRPG Tales of Xillia and more from Puppeteer head honcho Gavin Moore.

This week also saw the PlayStation Mobile service debut in some territories (anyone else horribly addicted to Fuel Tiracas?), and we had news on The Unfinished Swan, Silent Hill: Book of Memories, God of War: Ascension and Until Dawn, to name but a few. All in all, it’s been a busy week, I’d say!

Check out the links below, and then feel free to bombard me with questions/insults/links to cat pictures below. I’ll do my best to respond in kind… (more…)

Weekend Debate: Putting a price on fun

So, this week saw the PlayStation Mobile service roll out in a number of territories, bringing with it a raft of bite-sized titles tailor-made for short-session ‘snack’ gaming. I’ve found time to check out a handful of the games and generally I’m impressed by what’s on offer.

Looking around the web at the reaction from gamers, a lot of the discussion seems to have focussed on price. I’ve always found it interesting how gamers – or consumers of any kind of entertainment medium – assign value to a product. Let’s take PSM title Super Crate Box, which is currently selling for £2.79/€3.49.

I’ve probably poured at least 40 hours into that title in its various incarnations over the last year or so. Compare that to, say, Darksiders – a great game, but I probably only spent around 10 hours on it for my £40 outlay. I’m not for a moment suggesting I wasn’t content with my purchase, but it does make me question exactly what gamers value most in a title. (more…)

Joe Danger 2

Hello World! It’s great to be back on the PlayStation Blog so soon! I’m here to tell you something surprising! Joe Danger 2 is coming to PlayStation gamers very soon – next week in fact! That’s October 10th in Europe!

PlayStation owners are getting a huge exclusive DLC pack of bonus content too. I’d love to tell you more about it, but first I’m going to have to explain a little about how we make games.

When we make a game, we make it for ourselves. We play it every day, getting better and better at it. The great thing is that you get rid of every snag and rough edge, but then we let our friends play, and realise it has become too hard! (more…)

Pid

The video game medium is unique in the respect that it borrows from many other media, such as moving pictures, radio, and even written word. The one aspect that separates games from movies or books is their ability to interact.

Interaction is commonly regarded as the beneficial component that can help define a game. But there are other distinctions worth mentioning, too. A book is conventionally about the text; a movie is the combination of sound and pictures. A game experience however, can be crafted using a varied palette and with a more unpredictable focus. The balance between the different media incorporated within a game differs from project to project. That is the strength of video games as a medium – but also the challenge for consumers.

As players, we usually carry our own set of expectations and opinions regarding the balance between the games’ different sides. Some people prefer titles all about the story; others would discard anything that doesn’t display visual beauty. Of course, there are players who wouldn’t care whether their protagonist is a submarine or a dinosaur, as long as the interaction part is skillfully developed. Between sound, moving pictures, text, and interaction, we all have our favorites. (more…)
