Best Third-Person Shooters for iOS and Android

John Bedford May 30, 2012 at 5:30PM

You could spend your whole life staring down the barrel of a gun playing first-person games, but sometimes, it's nice to take a step back and see a little more of the environment. On that note, we rounded up the best third-person shooters available on iOS and Android.

Mass Effect Infiltrator

One of the few franchises to make a truly confident leap from home consoles to mobile gaming devices, Infiltrator is a fantastic example of how to transfer the spirit of a game, rather than attempt to shoehorn the complete experience onto a mismatched system. Taking control of Cerberus agent Randall Ezno, you abandon your lust for abducting aliens for questionable experiments and instead turn on your masters.

Max Payne Mobile

Back for a third outing on consoles this month, Max still has an old home on mobile devices in this third-person adventure. He's still every inch the fugitive cop on a mission to clear his name, and his signature Bullet Time maneuvers have made the transition to mobile flawlessly. The game also features Rockstar's Social Club networking system, so you can keep track of all your murderous exploits.

Shadowgun

Set in one of those futuristic, nightmare-vision-of-the-future universes where corporations have overtaken humanity, Shadowgun is a beautiful third-person shooter that sees you taking on the role of a particularly accomplished bounty hunter, trailing an insane scientist who's assembled a mutant army. The enemies are intelligent in combat, the graphics are beautiful, and there's a whole load of epic bosses to tackle.

Dead Space

Dead Space picked up more than a few plaudits when it was released, and it set the stage perfectly for this gory effort from EA Mobile. Jump into Survival mode if you want immediate, fast-paced action across four different maps, or take in the twisted story through extended play sessions. Messy and macabre, Dead Space on mobiles is one of the most accomplished mature games we've seen yet.

Frontline Commando

Those who are wary of in-app purchases might want to stay away from this “free” title, but if you don't mind being limited to basic weaponry, Frontline Commando is still well worth your time. Explosive destruction is very much the order of the day, as you assume the role of a lone Commando on the front line of an epic battle against a thoroughly disagreeable dictator.

EPOCH

An Apple Game of the Week, this post-apocalyptic nightmare stars a robotic fight for survival as you attempt to blast your way towards the ultimate answer – where did all the people go? As you travel on your journey through the wastelands, you'll take in arena combat and customize your metallic marauder with all sorts of different abilities and weaponry.
