Macroinvertebrate Communities

Historic

Prior to development, Balch Creek would have likely supported a greater diversity of macroinveterbrate species.

Current

No aquatic habitat remains for macroinvertebrate species in the section of Balch Creek flowing through the storm sewer system across the terrace. In the open reaches above the pipe, Balch Creek provides good habitat for macroinveterbrate communities.

Assessment

Processes that have led to alterations in macroinvertebrate communities include filling of wetlands, piping and hardening of stream channels, clearing of vegetation, and residential, transportation, and industrial development.
