Smartphone users now spend more time on Instagram than Twitter.

In August, some 7.3 million people pulled up Instagram on their phones every day, compared to only 6.9 million who opened Twitter’s mobile platform religiously, according to data released by comScore, a digital market research firm. What’s more, fans of Instagram, which lets users snap, edit and share photos, spent almost 4½ hours using the app in August, compared with just under three hours for serial tweeters, who blast out short messages to “followers.”

Twitter still has more smartphone users, but not as many log in daily. The social media start-up had 29 million unique mobile visitors last month, compared with 22 million who used Instagram. Twitter also has almost 300 million total visitors — including those logging in from desktop computers — while Instagram is only on phones.

Last year, the comic/blog XKCD had the Internet examine various colors and name them. They ended up with a sample size of 5,000,000, and designer Stephen Von Worley turned the 2,000 most common responses into a gender-exploring interactive infographic. As it seemingly turns out, men and women call the same colors different names.

Google Just Produced a MAD Visualization

Mapping Arms Data, that is. It visualizes the imports and exports of small arms, light weapons, and ammunition across 250 states and territories between 1992 and 2010. Specifically:

• Military weapons include artillery, mortars, machine guns (sub, light, and heavy), assault rifles, combat shotguns, and machine pistols.

• Civilian arms consist of pistols, revolvers, sporting shotguns, sporting rifles (anything not rated as a military item including fully automatic weaponry).

• Ammunition includes shotgun shells and small caliber ammo (anything below 14.5mm which isn’t fired from a shotgun).

It was produced as part of the Google Ideas INFO (Illicit Networks, Forces in Opposition) Summit. Read more about it here.

FJP: We particularly like its use of WebGL, which is a JavaScript API for rendering interactive graphics. It’s alarming, illuminating, and pretty mesmerizing to play with.

As Facebook explains, its gifts are intended as a new way for “millions of people” to celebrate moments together. Users can now send gifts from birthday reminders, or from their friend’s timeline. Gifts can be public or private. Facebook even makes the process relatively frictionless, allowing you to pay right away or alterately add your card details later. Then, whomever receives the gift simply unwraps it digitally, enters in their address and finds it on their doorstep days later. Aunts, uncles and grandparents are about to have a field day, and kids will finally understand why it’s not such a bad idea to have their relatives on the social network. This Coca-Cola.FM Ad Pumps Up Your iPhone’s Volume

Being a long-time iPhone owner, I’ve become all too familiar with how to strategically place my device for maximum sound amplification. I’ve found that it’s possible to boost your phone’s volume — you’ve just got to get creative. And that’s exactly what Coca-Cola.FM did with its latest print ad, created by JWT Brazil. The piece is featured in the latest issue of Capricho Magazine and celebrates Coca-Cola.FM’s first birthday. Pretty cool for a free promotional iPod accessory, huh?

“New York City has just recently announced the H.E.L.M (Hire Expand in Lower Manhattan) contest, its latest initiative to bring more startups into Manhattan’s growing tech scene, which promises up to $1.2M in funds to startups looking to reside in Lower Manhattan. Sponsored by NYCEDC, LMDC and HR&A, this contest is one piece of a much larger goal spearheaded by NY: to rapidly boost the city’s tech scene through public and private efforts. What’s interesting about H.E.L.M, however, is its substantial prize and the target goal of growing the startup and tech presence in Wall St. territory, an area that has long been dominated by the financial sector.”
