iPhone 5: No Steve Jobs, no sizzle

Apple's iPhone 5 launch with new iPods and an iTunes overhaul highlights the new era at the company that revolves around incremental updates, design prowess, and control of an entire user experience. But something is missing: the Steve Jobs reality distortion field.

Jobs' showmanship was brilliant. He could take an incremental update -- or a feature that has been seen somewhere else before -- and make you think it was brilliant, amazing, and beautiful. I knew it was a game, but it was one I played willingly. I'm going through Apple keynote withdrawal.

Now I'm beginning to … Read more

New images of Steve Jobs during Apple founder's early years

Starting in 1986, photojournalist Doug Menuez began taking photos of Steve Jobs, then in exile from Apple and working at his next startup, NeXt. Jobs was just one of the execs Menuez followed around as part of a 15-year chronicle of Silicon Valley during a formative era in its history. But the pictures never saw the light of day after Jobs had a change of heart.

Until now. The photos went up on display as part of the "Moscow Photobiennale: 'Fearless genius' inaugural exhibition."

"The Russians have a long tradition of scientific and engineering excellence and seemed … Read more

HP increases job cuts to 29,000

Hewlett-Packard will cut more of its global staff than first planned, upping the figure from around 27,000 to 29,000 employees.

The world's largest computer maker said today in its

Court OKs feds' e-book settlement with publishers

A federal court has approved a settlement agreement reached between the U.S. Department of Justice and three book publishers accused of conspiring with Apple to fix e-book prices.

The DOJ filed suit against Apple and five of the country's largest book publishers in April and accused the group of antitrust violations. Immediately after filing the complaint, the government announced that it had reached a settlement with three of the five accused publishers: Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, and Simon & Schuster (owned by CBS, parent company of CNET).

As part of that settlement, the three e-book publishers agreed … Read more

AngelList attacks another startup pain point: Legal fees

AngelList -- a booming site where angel investors find tech startups to back -- is rolling out a product today that should please a lot of would-be Mark Zuckerbergs and, in theory, worry a lot of lawyers.

Ultimately, it could help both.

The site, founded in early 2010 by entrepreneurs/angel investors Naval Ravikant and Babak Nivi, is now offering standardized online documents that will make it faster and cheaper for any of the thousands of startups on AngelList to close their first round of funding.

AngelList Docs, as it's called, breaks down the money-raising paperwork process in a … Read more

Apple tries out new 'Think Different' campaign

On the Apple campus, thinking different is worshipped. The company's core aspiration is to deliver startling breakthroughs, not me-too, products. Now Apple is calling upon its rivals to "think different," but for different reasons than creating breakthrough products.

Apple's "Think Different" philosophy was expressed in a series of ads commissioned by Steve Jobs in 1997, a time when Apple was early in its comeback from the brink of bankruptcy. The ads featured Albert Einstein, Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King, Jr., Richard Branson, John Lennon (with Yoko Ono), Buckminster Fuller, Thomas Edison, Muhammad … Read more

How Apple made white the most popular car color

It's odd how the world acts subliminally upon our desperate minds.

One minute it tells us to love Kelly Clarkson, the next hip-hop. One minute it sneaks the idea of monogamy into our brains, the next it makes pornography available online and we're louche putty.

How touching, then, that there's a deep subliminal reason for all the white cars we see on the streets these days. Have you noticed? Yes, white has now superseded silver as our favorite car color.

Why might this be? Oh, the same reason we've become gadget-obsessed, socially networking automatons: yes, Steve … Read more

Original Apple 1 a steal at $127,000

Another original Apple 1 computer is up for sale, and this time it's expected to fetch no more than $127,000, a steal compared with the last unit sold.

Christie's is putting the rare computer -- each model was designed and hand-built by Steve Wozniak with input from the late Steve Jobs -- on sale in October, the auction house announced today.

The Apple co-founders produced about 200 of these units and fewer than 50 still exist, according to Christie's. Originally sold for $666.66 from July 1976 to October 1977, the computer that started it all is now selling for tens of thousands of dollars. … Read more

Apple Stores reportedly still face budget cuts, unhappy workers

The Apple Store has been touted as the model for retailers. But a new report says the chain's ongoing budget cuts are not going down well with employees.

Citing information from a variety of inside sources, blog site ifoAppleStore claims that the stores are changing "employee performance standards" to focus more on sales and profits over customer satisfaction.

Apple's retail vice president, John Browett, reportedly admitted that the company "messed up" when it implemented a new system that cut hours for some employees and left certain Apple stores understaffed. Trying to reassure concerned employees, … Read more
