Fable cocreator leaves Lionhead - Report
Lead technical director of action RPG series departs Guildford, UK shop alongside brother Dene; reportedly setting up new Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam, and mobile studio.
In the well-received Fable 3, gamers became a king or queen and exercised power of the land. However, such power isn't for everyone, as another key Fable player has left series shop Lionhead.
Speaking with Gamesindustry.biz today, Lionhead's lead technical director Simon Carter announced that he has left the Guildford, UK developer. He and his brother Dene--who left Lionhead last year--will head up a new digital download-focused studio aimed at creating Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam, and mobile games. According to the report, both Simon and Dene were considered "senior management" at Lionhead.
Simon Carter was a cofounder of Big Blue Box, the developer that created the Fable series shortly before merging with Lionhead. In addition to helping create the three core Fable installments, Simon Carter served as technical lead on Dungeon Keeper and was also a part of Bullfrog Productions.
"The decision to leave Lionhead was a very difficult one," Simon Carter told the site. "After initiating the franchise over a decade ago, I still love the world of Fable, and I'm very proud of what Big Blue Box and Lionhead achieved."
Simon Carter explained his decision to depart the studio, saying the games industry is an "exciting place at the moment" and that he is looking forward to "new opportunities to pursue."
"Everything is changing," he said. "Consumer play habits, the relationship between the player and the developer, new funding and payment models; in a few years, things are likely to look very different from the industry we know now."
Lionhead's current project is Fable: The Journey, which was outed just before Microsoft's E3 2011 media briefing only to be confirmed just hours later. Fore more on the Kinect-enabled title, check out GameSpot's preview of Fable: The Journey.
He probably left because he knew Fable: The Journey is going to blow donkey dicks.
Smart move...
Make Dungeon Keeper 3, Black and White 3, The Movies 2, Theme Hospital 2, Theme Park Remake and i will forgive you Peter. >:(
I didn't even bother to buy Fable 3. Fable 2 was enough for me. Had a great time with B&W; and the first Fable years ago, though.
Sounds like its time to bring out Black & White 3.
Fable 3 is buggy as hell and I thought they fixed it for the PC..now my dog is limping with no cure for it.
oh yes this game i don't like don't know about xbox players but it didn't make me buy a xbox and a kinect thing....too bad they did it like this
i've played fable 3 on pc and it is easy, the first one was good the second i don't know ....but the 3rd fable was inferior to the first a port on pc but it was ok not that bad just ok....i still hope for a new B&W; , that game made Lionhead what it is or what it was, a good studio , then they forgot the pc gamers but thats ok if they will release a B&W; game good enough for xbox and pc they will be as they were (ya i know a game like that is verry hard to make for consoles , the restrictions and whatever but still if they do it right they will be as good as before fable 2 and 3)...good luck to Lionhead and i don't care about that guy that let his problems not mine, maybe a good thing or a bad thing we will see
-_- that game just looks like trash nuff said....
not suprise witht he kinct that this new one Fable the jouney going to be the worst game. I still rember fable 1 still do but Fable 3 should gone like 2nd one did. I dont blame him leaveing i think lionstudios wants out xbox360 whats going to happen when game realease dont you think.
fable 1 and the original black and white, all down hill since then
I'm still mad about the state Fable 3 was in when it was released. I've never played such a broken, buggy piece of **** in all my life. I lost all trust and respect for Lionhead after that. The Fable series can die for all I care. I'll never buy another Lionhead game.
Lionhead is screwed by Micro$oft.
Fable: the journey better not be the actual fable IV. or ill be pissed. >:(
Well, anyone else need a sign that Fable The Journey is going to suck aside from undoing all your work in number 3.
I enjoyed the fable series but after seeing what the kinect is doing to it i lost faith in it. Hopefully thats a kinect only title and fable 4 will be coming soon
I would have probably jumped ship if possible too instead of working on what in my heart of hearts I knew was just a gimmicky kinect game
Hope they shut down the franchise. Hate it.
and so we begin the decent into madness, I just can't wait to see what they come up with next.
F2 F1 F3
fable 1 was so good than fable 2 improved on it while making some bad choices but 3rd was ok and ow i have lost all faith in it.
Only one I ever played was Fable 2, and while it entertained me, I was never compelled to finish it. The gameplay just wasn't all that exciting. Now Bullfrogs Syndicate Wars on the PS1--that was a game.
I lost faith after Fable 2.
Dungeon Keeper... how I miss you :(
I really hope this game gets canceled and they come back to it with a clear head in a couple of years, hopefully with the next gen consoles. This game looks like garbage, just like Fable 2 was garbage.
this game looks really perdy...might be interesting
No more social network games please..
Maybe because he was sick of mediocre games being overly hyped.
Hopefully he brings out some good stuff in the future - the first Fable was excellent. Molyneux should give the series a rest and work on a follow-up to Populous! I would love to see him return to that.
make BLACK&WHITE; 3 ,Lionhead
QUOTE: The_Undead_2 "I haven't watched the E3 demo for "Fable: The Journey". But I'm pretty sure Peter is telling everyone that it's the second coming in video game format. You literally play as Jesus as he converts all" the non-believers (non-Mormons) in a baptism by fire. Fire, along with sword will be your most valuable asset as you confront the hosts of the damned (again, non-Mormons). Also when you cut trees down, they grow back in real time." Stay off the crack and stay off this site.
stop it......fable TLC was my first RPG so it means a lot to me.....i always buy fable i always will.........fable was an inspiration and i dont want lionhead to stop making fable ever....dont get discouraged they will rise again.....
First to desert the sinking ship that is Lionhead.
Damn, I'm probably gonna check this game out and I hate myself for it...
Maybe this is a good thing the franchise needs some fresh air.
Peter Moleneux isn't exciting anymore and Lionhead has become a Microsoft choked mess. I'll always remember you for Syndicate and Dungeon Keeper.
So an RPG series is going to a rail shooter now? Fail Molyneux. But thanks for letting me know I dont even have to give Journey a second look. At least Fable 3 I looked at a couple times before deciding it wasnt worth it.
@Fayt1986 Did you play Fable 3? The story was okay, but the gameplay was streamlined to ****. There wasn't even an inventory menu, the only way to view your misc items was at the pawn broker. Your emotes were very limited as well.. Again, it was a decent game, but overly simplified.
i think someone should go on a machine gun rapage through the Lionhead development studios and through the offices of the idiots who thought making fable:the journey into an on rails shooter.....
i dont see how it aint all gone up in flames yet fable was epic fable2 was ok and 3 was just the same with no improvements..... and now its on rails with the kinect o.o im sorry but fable is dead.
Just waiting for Fableville to show up on Facebook so that the turn to the dark side will be complete and the series can be put out of the misery it is about to find itself neck deep in.
So i have to travel 300 miles on a horse carriage. thats the main focus of the game. that sounds like so much fun i cant wait, im so bored of driving cars. horse carriage is way more fun.
If my company was headed towards almost certain disaster by releasing an On-Rails Motion Shooter as the spiritual sequel to my Free Roaming RPG I would probably quit too. I mean really Molyn00b? You can't come up with anything better to do in Albion?
I have an idea: stop trying to develop games for this junk peripheral and get back to making quality games....you know, the ones that require a gamepad.
Fable And Kinect ???? ARE YOU SERIOUS ? !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Dunno If I'll Like That !!!
Lionhead did well with all the other games the made Fable 2 and 3 are Just bad, The games should have died at Fable one and if the 2nd one was good (It was horrible) Then maybe it should have kept on going. The art in the game is the only good while Gameplay, and this Fail "choose your Path." were its downfall
of course everyone is leaving, what do you expect when you kill a Great game series with some stupid kinect crap
After that E3 showing I'm not surprised he is jumping ship!
The first fable was by far the best one, and the second was good. but now they've left everything that truly made it great in the first.
Fable 3 was only marginally better than the disappointing Fable 2. And the reality is that Microsoft has sunk a lot of money into creating and marketing this franchise, and now they're going to milk it; "Fable: Journey" only confirms this. Chances are, the payout from Microsoft to top designers on the franchise has probably peeked. With the foundation laid, managers and leads are now interchangeable cogs to be replaced on the well-oiled Fable machinery. This is the time to get out. Good for him. "Industry has come to Albion" indeed.
