Repurpose paintbrushes to clean camera gear

Repurpose paintbrushes to clean camera gear

Lens cleaning equipment such as blower brushes and compressed air can take up quite a bit of space in your bag. The folks at Digital Camera World have come up with a novel DIY way of keeping things compact by transforming paintbrushes into portable tools for cleaning off minute particles when shooting in dusty environments.

All you need is an inexpensive paintbrush that's readily available at any craft shop.… Read more

'Requiem for lives lost': Making music from Mexico's guns

'Requiem for lives lost': Making music from Mexico's guns

That crazy-looking flute in the above picture? Chances are it was a weapon in Mexico's drug war.

Or parts of it were, at least. Now those pieces make up one of 50 working musical instruments engineered from confiscated Mexican revolvers, shotguns, and machine guns that were once scheduled for public destruction.

Mexico City-based artist Pedro Reyes conceived of the project, titled "Imagine," as a statement on widespread gun violence in the country. … Read more

What Lady Gaga is seeing on Twitter, right now

What Lady Gaga is seeing on Twitter, right now

It's always been easy on Twitter to see someone else's @-replies, simply by doing a search for say, "@LadyGaga."

But what if you wanted to see more than that? What if you wanted to pretend you were the global pop superstar and fashion icon and peek into her Twitter feed to see what all the people she follows were saying?

Until now, there's been no easy way to do that directly through any of Twitter's official apps -- although it's a simple thing to do in a client like TweetDeck. But with the … Read more

iPad 4 charges faster thanks to new power adapter

iPad 4 charges faster thanks to new power adapter

Apple's iPad 4 charges quicker than previous iPads courtesy of its new power adapter.

Plugging the new iPad into a watt meter through the new adapter, Apple news and reviews site Insanely Great Mac recorded 12 watts of juice. Previous iPad adapters deliver just 10 watts.

Those two extra watts may not sound like much, but they'll trim a good 30 to 45 minutes off the charge time, according to IGM.

Unfortunately, owners of previous iPads and the iPhone are out of luck. Though the new power adapter is compatible with older units, it won't provide more … Read more

Discover the Higgs boson particle -- on your wrist

Discover the Higgs boson particle -- on your wrist

Much like the epic quests of yore, the hunt for the Higgs boson particle has inspired stirring music, Stephen Hawking wagers, and now a timepiece for your wrist.

The Higgs Boson Watch is the God Particle taken the form of a personal accessory. The face of the watch depicts the Higgs decaying into other bosons during a collision. The hands move in a hypnotic spiral. If you stare at it long enough, you may gain an understanding of the very fabric of our universe.… Read more

Apple: The iPad Mini has stereo speakers

Apple: The iPad Mini has stereo speakers

Apple's new iPad Mini does have two stereo speakers, despite Amazon's attempt to fudge the facts.

On Sunday, the retail giant unveiled a comparison chart on its home page pitting its own Kindle Fire HD against Apple's iPad Mini. With all the stats stacked in favor of the Kindle, Amazon said that its tablet offers dual stereo speakers while the iPad Mini is stuck with just mono sound.

Though Amazon has since taken down the chart from its home page, another chart contrasting the two 7-inch rivals now says the iPad Mini has a single speaker.

But … Read more

A car for women? At Honda, yep

A car for women? At Honda, yep

What does a car for women look like, exactly? Does it look different than a car for a man? What, pray tell, is a gender-specific car?

I don't know the answers to those questions, but apparently Honda does. The Japanese automaker is offering a Honda Fit subcompact designed specifically for women -- it's badged "She's" -- that's pink on the outside (though it can also be had in "eyeliner brown," black, or white); pink on the inside (yes, even the stitching); and in many ways a throwback to the 1950s. … Read more

Rumor Has It: Google to send you a couple cold beers?

Rumor Has It: Google to send you a couple cold beers?

On this week's show, we investigate the logic behind the rumor of Google's delivery ambitions. We know Google had ventured far afield from its core search functionality in the past (cough, Android, cough, Google Wave, cough driverless cars) but it's hard to see how Google could invade the shopping/delivery sphere. It doesn't have any warehouses, delivery trucks, or even, to be perfectly frank, any products to sell. But those concerns may be missing the point.

We also go over the reports that Apple's now-former iOS chief Scott Forstall lost his job because his mama … Read more

Ode to Buckyballs, on the day of their demise

Ode to Buckyballs, on the day of their demise
Buckyballs, I hardly knew ye. The powerful little magnets came into my life only recently. Lured by a $5-per-set blowout sale, I loaded up with purple and orange Buckyballs and silver and gold Buckycubes.

When I opened my first box, I thought, "How tiny!" And then I began to play. Sure, they're supposed to be relaxing desk toys, but I found myself bent over the table, squinting and swearing, as I tried to form them back into the perfect square they came in.

When I finally achieved the box structure, I felt triumphant. Then I squished the shape into amorphous oblivion once again. This is the joy of Buckyballs. The power of creation. The power of destruction. The challenge of building beautiful, orderly forms from magnetic chaos.… Read more
