Top 5 features missing from iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 has arrived, and it's pretty great. But I can't shake this nagging feeling that Apple could have done more.

A week ago, CNET's David Carnoy penned a great roundup of the most-wanted features that didn't make it into the iPhone 5. It seemed like easy pickings for a Top 5 video, so I imposed a ranking, stood in front of a camera, and created the video you see before you (click here if you don't see a video at the top of this … Read more

Analyst: Expect Apple's Lightning to strike for up to a decade

Apple's Lightning isn't going anywhere anytime soon, one analyst says.

KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote to investors that Apple's Lightning is expected to follow in the footsteps of the 30-pin connector it replaced and come built into the company's products for up to the next 10 years, according to AppleInsider, which obtained a copy of a research note. The technology could be replaced as soon as five years from now, the analyst reportedly told investors.

Apple introduced Lightning with its iPhone 5. The technology is an all-digital, eight-signal design. The 30-pin connector was the standard Apple … Read more

Apple's Lightning connector and you: What you should know

What is the new Lightning connector? Unveiled at the press conference announcing the iPhone 5 and 2012 iPod lineup, the proprietary Lightning connector replaces the 30-pin connector found on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod since 2003. Like the 30-pin connector, the Lightning connector is used for charging the device as well as syncing content and data and audio and video output. The new devices come with a USB 2.0-to-Lightning cable.

How is it different from the 30-pin connector? It's 80 percent smaller yet sturdier, and it's reversible, so you don't have to worry about which side … Read more

5 things that surprised me about the iPhone 5

After a week of using the iPhone 5, I've posted my review of Apple's new phone on CNET. Which brings me to wondering: how much can a familiar-looking device that we've seemingly known about for months be capable of surprising anyone, much less a tech editor?

For me, the iPhone 5 surprised in the following ways.

The weight Shaving about an ounce off a phone's heft doesn't sound like a lot, and I've always been skeptical of incremental reductions (20 percent lighter!), but the first thing that shocked me when I picked up the … Read more

iPhone 5 preorders indicate hot demand

Friday's tech news roundup didn't plan ahead:

A rush of iPhone 5 preorders online have pushed back shipping dates at Apple and wireless carriers for at least two weeks. Some stores, like Wal-Mart and Target, are also offering iPhone 5 preorders for in-store pickup. The initial supply of iPhones for Apple preorders went in less than an hour, which is much faster than years prior. It shows that either demand is way up for this model, or Apple didn't have as many available for the preorder crowd (or a mix of both). We won't know for … Read more

Apple to iPhone 5 buyers: No free 30-pin adapter for you

iPhone 5 buyers won't be getting a Lightning to 30-pin adapter on the house after all.

Reports that the new phone would come with the adapter surfaced today after some of Apple's online stores listed it as packaged with the iPhone 5.

The information on Apple's U.K. iPhone 5 order page specifically said that "your phone includes a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter for connecting 30-pin accessories to devices featuring the Lightning connector."

But it seems Apple committed a bit of a gaffe here. Customers who called or chatted with Apple reps about the adapter … Read more

Apple to sell Lightning adapters for HDMI and VGA, says report

Apple may be adding to its lineup of Lightning adapters.

The company will sell Lightning to HDMI and Lightning to VGA adapters in "the coming months," an Apple spokesman reportedly told The Verge.

The two new adapters would join the Lightning to 30-pin adapter for Apple's new iPhone and iPods.

The 30-pin adapter already will come in two variations: a $39 7-inch adapter cable and a $29 stub adapter. Both are listed as shipping in two to three weeks, which would mean around early October.

The Apple Web site does confirm that the Lightning to 30-pin adapter … Read more

iPhone 5 buyers face Lightning cable, adapter scarcity

Love it or hate it, Apple's new Lightning plug is here to stay.

But the cables and adapters to get some of your old gear working with your new iPhone or iPod that uses the technology? You'll have a wait ahead of you if you want to buy them from Apple's online store.

Apple's USB-to-Lightning adapter, which runs for $19 and comes as a pack-in with the iPhone 5, and the iPod Nano and Touch, has gone from shipping in 1-3 days to 2-3 weeks.

It's potentially an even longer wait for both models of … Read more
