MANGA: ONE PIECE Vol.64 Review

Brutal Humanity

Monkey D. Luffy is on a quest to become the King of Pirates, but to do so, he'll have to conquer the New World. Before he does that though, he'll have to make a pit stop at Fish-Man Island, an underwater island with a turbulent past.

The history of Fish-Man Island is rife with persecution and hatred. For centuries, humans looked down on their aquatic counterparts, deeming them their inferior. Slaves from Fish-Man Island, including Fish-Men and mermaids, fetch high prices at auctions. Nowadays, the vicious cycle of hatred continues despite Fisher Tiger’s rebellion and Jimbei’s willingness to join the World Government as a Warlord of the Sea.

One member of Fish-Man royalty, Queen Otohime, dedicated her life to eradicating the barrier between humans and Fish-Men with the dream of one day living and coexisting with humans on the surface. However, that dream came crashing down with her tragic assassination.

Taking advantage of the Fish-Men’s fear and ignorance of humans, Hody Jones, captain of the New Fish-Man Pirates, manipulates the entire populace, all with the grand hopes of taking over Fish-Man Island and annihilating the human race. However, the Straw Hat crew, Princess Shirahoshi and Jimbei are standing in the way of his grand ambition.

Though Luffy spent two years training and honing his special power known as haki, he’s still fighting at a disadvantage. Because of his Devil Fruit powers, his one true weakness is his inability to fight underwater. On the other hand, the merciless Hody Jones is stronger fighting in water and is nearly invincible from ingesting Energy Steriods, a dangerous pill that boosts his strength to unfathomable heights.

The fate of Fish-Man Island rests on the skinny shoulders of one of the world’s most sought-after pirate, Monkey D. Luffy. But will the Fish-Man Island inhabitants overlooks his human heritage and help him in his fight to save their island?

After reading volume 64, I couldn't stop watching the battles. Strawhats vs New Fishman Pirates, Luffy vs Hody Jones, rescuing someone important; this is like a combination between Luffy vs Arlong and the paramont war arc. Funny, I actually got this book digital before it came out for print. Aside from that, this is the best One Piece fight I have ever seen.
