Burnham Boatyard can be found on an island marsh overlooking the Essex river basin. It has been the site of shipbuilding in Essex for four centuries and home to the Burnham family since that time. Harold Burnham, 43, has built five vessels there since 1992; currently, he is building the 50-foot double sawn frame schooner Ardelle, named after his grandmother and his daughter Perry Ardelle.
