Mars panoramic skirt: Wrap a rover around your waist

I have a space dream. I've been invited to the NASA prom by Mohawk Guy. He's going to pick me up in the Mars Curiosity rover. What on earth am I going to wear? I'd better head over to Etsy and order a Mars panoramic skirt.

Etsy seller Go Chase Rabbits has a huge line of geek chic skirts, but the Mars rover panoramic is especially impressive. … Read more

Your one chance to reply to aliens

We have ceded our attempts to communicate with aliens far too often to Hollywood.

There, paunchy producers and pugnacious directors have portrayed aliens as scary, difficult people, not unlike certain recording artists and movie actors.

Now you have the chance to speak to aliens directly and offer a peace pipe, or at least a pipingly warm greeting.

For, as part of the National Geographic Channel's "Chasing UFOs" series, everyone is invited to reply to a message sent (maybe) by aliens.… Read more

Sega Dreamcast classic ChuChu Rocket now on Android

In ChuChu Rocket, your objective is to guide hordes of frantic mice (ChuChus) to their rocket ship by dropping arrowed tiles on the ground. As the mice move about the screen, simply swipe in front of them to drop a tile and point them in a direction to run. While the game may not sound very difficult, there are, in fact, an assortment of obstacles and an army of evil cats that very well could have you pulling your hair out by level 10.

There are three different game modes to choose from in ChuChu Rocket: Puzzle, Challenge, and Battle. … Read more

Hackers post data on JP Morgan Chase CEO

Hackers have posted personal information about the chief executive of J.P. Morgan Chase in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protests.

The document released on Pastebin by "CabinCr3w" includes information about CEO James Dimon's addresses, family, business connections, political contributions and legal information. A spokeswoman for J.P. Morgan Chase said the company is declining to comment.

The same hackers posted personal data of Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and of New York Police Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna earlier this week after Bologna was seen in videos pepper-spraying peaceful demonstrators in the face last weekend. Bologna, … Read more

Report: LivingSocial moves closer to IPO filing

LivingSocial, one of the major players in the social-buying sector, has hired JPMorgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch to oversee the company's upcoming initial public offering, The New York Times reported Friday.

According to the Times, LivingSocial managers have discussed in meetings with the bankers the possibility of raising $700 million to $1 billion in the stock sale. That would give the company a value of $10 billion to $15 billion.

If you're wondering what "social buying" is or if that sounds like a catchphrase left over from the previous bubble era, you're not alone. The company is one of Groupon's biggest competitors, another one of these deal-of-the-day services that offers discounts to users. LivingSocial is just one of the many tech start-ups preparing to test the public markets.

There's a lot of skepticism that many of the companies that have filed for IPOs or are considering them--including LinkedIn, Pandora, and Groupon--can justify their lofty valuations. Groupon has already filed for an IPO and the Times reports that the company's valuation may be as high as $30 billion.

What might add some credibility for the social-buying sector is that Googleand Facebook are competing there now.

Some of the other companies that have gone public or are reportedly considering one include HomeAway, Active Network, Skype and Trulia. … Read more

E3 2011: Hands-on with Wii U tablet and games

Earlier this morning Nintendo introduced the Wii U, the successor to the Wii. Think of the Wii U as a sort of DS and Wii hybrid, combining touch and motion controls, with an on-screen HD gaming experience.

We were lucky enough to get some hands-on time with a collection of Wii U game demos and time with the tablet controller; here are our impressions.

Breach exposes Chase, Capital One, TiVo customers

Epsilon, which manages e-mail communications for TiVo, JP Morgan Chase, Capital One Financial, US Bank, the Kroger grocery chain, and other clients, said this week that it suffered a security breach that revealed data on some of its clients' customers.

Epsilon, which says it sends 40 billion e-mails annually, released a statement yesterday saying that on March 30 it detected an "unauthorized entry" into its system that exposed customer names and e-mail addresses. The company said "no other personal identifiable information associated with those names was at risk."

Bloomberg reported that an Epsilon representative would not … Read more

News Corp. ready to unload MySpace

News Corp. is weighing the sale of MySpace as one of a few remaining options to deal with the once popular but now languishing social network.

News Corp. CEO Chase Carey said yesterday in an earnings conference call that the time is right to consider either restructuring its relationship with MySpace or just selling it outright.

"We recognize that the plan to allow MySpace to reach its full potential may be best developed under a new ownership structure and we're evaluating those strategic alternatives," Carey said, according to the AFP news service.

Although Carey clarified that options … Read more

ChaseCam HD: More resolution, smaller package

When racing teams want to record their vehicle's performance, they usually don't grab a GoPro Hero or ContourHD off of the shelf (although they surely could). Instead they use a system like ChaseCam's DIVA (Data Integrated Video Acquisition), which not only captures video from multiple cameras, but also records from an internal accelerometer, a GPS receiver, and a direct connection to the vehicle's brain via OBD-II/CAN bus. However, up until now and in spite of all of that functionality, the lipstick-size cameras in the ChaseCam system captured only SD video content. This year at the … Read more
