  • Summary: Set just after Japan opened its borders to the West in 1853, Way of the Samurai 4 inserts players into a world of opportunity and uncertainty as a masterless samurai looking to make a name for himself and continues the series’ blend of customization, exploration, action gameplay and quirky humor. Taking their place in the overall power struggle amongst the region’s powers, players are given the choice to align themselves with one of three factions: the shogunate pro-government forces, the nationalistic isolationists, and the foreign powers who are directed by the British Navy. Way of the Samurai 4 is a goofy, glorious romp through post-isolationist Japan, and it's about as fun and accessible as the series has ever been. While some bugs and graphical issues may sour the experience at times, that shouldn't prevent newcomers from giving the series a shot.

Genuinely bizarre and often-comedic situations generated charm, but Way of the Samurai 4's dated visuals, control difficulties, and stiff combat makes it needlessly frustrating.

Presentation and plot charms aside, the most glaring issue with Way of the Samurai 4 is that despite the number of activities, exploration, and new wrinkles to the formula, it's an anachronistic experience.
