The Academy supports other movie-related organizations and institutions, provides opportunities for high school students – and movie fans of all ages – to further their understanding and appreciation of movies and the moviemaking process, and works to encourage interaction between the public and filmmakers of all types.

For 11 days in December, Havana became a flashpoint of Cuban cinephilia. The 33rd International Festival of New Latin American Cinema drew hundreds of thousands of Cubans as well as distinguished Academy members Frank Pierson and Gregory Nava; Nava's producing partner, Barbara Martinez Jitner; and Academy Film Archive preservation officer Josef Lindner.
