Finland celebrate after winning their men's Goalball gold medal match against Brazil on Day 9 of the London 2012 Paralympic Games at the Copper Box.

On a dramatic final day of action at the Copper Box, Japan used their strong defence to claim the women's title with a 1-0 victory over rivals China, before Finland completed a remarkable turnaround to claim the men's crown.

The Finns had lost their first three games of the tournament but produced their best when it mattered most, capping an amazing run in the knockout stages with an 8-1 final triumph against Brazil.

Jarno Mattila scored a hat-trick  to send the European champions to gold, and he admitted afterwards that he could hardly believe their achievement.

'It's a great, great feeling,' he said. 'We did a good job. It was a difficult start [to the tournament] but we got stronger and stronger as time went on. Coming out [for the final], we knew that we could beat Brazil and we did.'

It's a great, great feeling,. We did a good job.

There were similar scenes of jubilation in the Japan camp after Akiko Adachi's goal earned a narrow success against China.

Defence proved the key for the Japanese as they withstood everything that China threw at them, and team member Haruka Wakasugi insisted it was a real group effort.

She said: 'I think we've done this all together because we have all been practising so hard together.

'I am so happy to be here, I'd like to say thank you to all the people who've supported us. I will definitely gain from this experience.'

Defeat in the final saw China and Brazil take silver, while Sweden won the women's bronze with victory over Finland and Turkey out-gunned world champions Lithuania 4-1 to win their first-ever Goalball medal at the Paralympic Games.
