Japan made their Paralympic debut on home soil at the 1964 Games in Tokyo and were the only Asian competitors. They are the second most successful Asian NPC overall (behind China), having won 336 Paralympic medals placing them 16th on the all-time Paralympic Games medal table. Their most prolific Paralympian is swimmer Mayumi NARITA, whose 15 gold medals between 1996 and 2004 make her one of the world's most successful Paralympians.
