Schoolchildren inspired by the Paralympic Games

Schoolchildren and sports clubs across the country are flocking to the Olympic Park to watch Paralympic sports and be inspired.

The Olympic Park has been awash with school groups who applied for Paralympic tickets through the Get Set programme

St. Bernadette’s Primary School in Hillingdon used their day passes to watch 7-a-side Football and women’s Wheelchair Tennis Doubles. Six lucky pupils also got tickets to see the Athletics.

Han, 10, said: ‘I loved the Athletics with the blind runners and their guides. I play baseball but I’d really like to try tennis now, after watching the Wheelchair Tennis.’ Kathryn, also 10, enjoyed the 7-a-side Football. She’s a keen swimmer and horserider but wants to try rowing after watching it on TV.

A group of gifted and talented sports pupils from years 7-11 at Thomas Keble School, Stroud, had tickets for the Olympic Stadium on ‘Thrilling Thursday’ and got to see British trio Hannah Cockroft, Jonnie Peacock and David Weir win gold. They spent the following day making the most of their day passes, seeing as many of the fantastic venues and Paralympic sports as they could.

Nathan, 12, said of the experience: ‘My favourite highlight was watching David Weir win gold in the men’s 800m. Watching the Games has made me want to try shot put.'

Fourteen-year-old Jack, Also from Thoman Keble School already plays basketball, rugby and athletics at school: ‘I’ve really enjoyed the atmosphere on the Olympic Park and am going to work even harder to get better at sport.’ Jack hopes to become an athlete himself one day.

The Get Set programme has given thousands of children across the UK the chance to watch sports they might never have heard of before, and see disability in a whole new light. If the aim of the Games was to inspire a generation, the experiences of these children certainly suggest that’s been achieved.
