Important travel advice announced for London 2012 road events

After the success of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the huge crowds who have turned out for the Olympic Torch Relay, Transport for London (TfL) and London 2012 today issued travel advice to spectators planning to attend the Olympic and Paralympic road events this summer.
Very large crowds are expected to attend this summer's road events
If you're thinking of going to watch, arrive early and plan your travel in advance.

A number of road events will be held during the Games, including the Paralympic Road Cycling at Brands Hatch, and the Marathon in central London. They offer a great opportunity for the public to watch world-class sport for free, and very large crowds are expected to attend.

Viewing capacity will be limited so spectators are advised to get there early and to use public transport, or walk and cycle, to get around. Those lucky enough to live near a route are advised to stay local.

Some road events also involve extensive road closures that will impact wider travel. In particular, the Olympic Cycling Road Races on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July and the Olympic Cycling Time Trial on Wednesday 1 August will have a significant impact on the road network in central and south-west London and Surrey. Motorists are being urged to avoid central London, areas around the Paralympic Route Network, and road event courses.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘London is gearing up to become a huge and wonderful sporting and cultural venue as we welcome the world for the Games. The road events offer a great opportunity to see some of the world’s top athletes in competition and to experience the numerous other attractions London has to offer. Given the huge numbers of people who will be in London for the Games, it is really important that people follow our travel advice and plan ahead.’
