Review: Golden glow for Netherlands women

The Netherlands painted the women's Wheelchair Tennis competition orange at London 2012, while a Japanese player became the first man to win two consecutive gold medals.

Led by the inimitable Esther Vergeer, the Netherlands showed they are the best in the world at the game by taking a clean sweep in the women's Singles plus gold and silver in women's Doubles.

Vergeer became the most decorated Wheelchair Tennis player, winning her fourth consecutive gold medal in the Singles and her third in Doubles with Marjolein Buis.

They beat compatriots Aniek van Koot and Jiske Griffioen in the final, with British pair Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley taking bronze.

Van Koot also fell to Vergeer in the Singles, with Griffioen taking bronze.

Vergeer broke down after what was her 470th victory in a row, saying: 'It's what I dreamed about, thought about and did everything for. There was so much pressure

'Everybody expected me to win gold and that I would win but I still had to work hard, to go to training, to be at the top of my game. A lot of people forget that.'

Defending champion Shingo Kunieda beat Stephane Houdet of France in the last, but by no means least spectacular, match at London 2012 in the men's Singles. The Netherlands' Ronald Vink won bronze.

Kunieda said: 'I'm tired, but I've done well. It's quite unbelievable... Today I came and played my tennis, the best that I could do. And now I have a gold medal, the best thing that I could ever have.'

Men's Doubles was perhaps the most unpredictable event at London 2012. Sweden's Stefan Olsson and Peter Vikstrom played well above their number-six ranking to win gold against French number four seeds Frederic Cattaneo and Nicolas Peifer.

The French took bronze as well, via Houdet and Michael Jeremiasz.

First-time Paralympian Noam Gershony of Israel won gold in the Quad Singles, beating top seed David Wagner of USA in front of large following in the stands who were cheering for him from day one.

The USA's Nick Taylor was ecstatic to win bronze - his first Singles medal.

He and Wagner won their third consecutive gold medal in the Quad Doubles, beating Andy Lapthorne and Peter Norfolk of Great Britain in the final. Gershony and Shraga Weinberg took the bronze for Israel.
