Australia and Canada stake medal claims

Defending champions Australia marched on unbeaten in Group A of the men's Wheelchair Basketball tournament but they will be all too aware of the danger being posed by the class of Group B, Canada.

Australia moved to 4-0 and secured first place in Group A with a 65-49 win over the USA as Justin Eveson collected 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Both teams are already assured of their place in the next round, but there was no let-up from Australia as they consigned the Americans to a second defeat of the tournament.

Josh Turek and Jason Nelms had eight points each for the USA.

While Australia have little to worry about in terms of their own performances, they are sure to be casting a glance towards Group B, where Canada have emerged as the class of the field helped by Patrick Anderson.

Their 73-66 win over Germany today was not always easy, but Anderson showed once again that he is in the form of his life.

The 33-year-old, who had what Canadian team officials said was his first career international triple-double against Great Britain two days ago, collected another with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists to power Canada to 4-0, with captain Bo Hedges adding 24 points.

Anderson retired after Beijing 2008, but returned to action last year with the goal of playing in a fourth career Paralympic Games, and he is more than making the hard work pay off so far.

Canada and Germany are both through, but the picture behind them is much more muddled with three teams vying for two places.

Hosts Great Britain put themselves in pole position with an impressive 87-58 win over rivals Poland, while Japan kept themselves in contention by beating Colombia 63-49, eliminating the South Americans.

Britain will advance with victory over Japan tomorrow, but could even go through with a loss if Germany beat Poland and Britain avoid a heavy defeat.

On today's form, that second scenario will not be relevant as they beat Poland, pulling out to a 12-2 lead and never looking back.

Terry Bywater had 22 points with Ian Sagar and Dan Highcock each adding 14, Simon Munn 12 and Jon Hall 10.

Japan comfortably saw off Colombia as Reo Fujimoto scored 21 of his 27 points in the first half, adding 14 rebounds.

Colombia began with a 10-3 start, but had little to shout about thereafter.

In Group A, Spain edged out Turkey 67-64 in an intense battle as Diego de Paz Pazo scored 19 points.

Matteo Cavagnini poured in 33 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as Italy beat South Africa 61-32 to bounce back from a frustrating loss to Turkey yesterday.

In a game between two teams already eliminated from quarter-final contention, Amine Moukhariq added 10 points, while Richard Nortje had 15 for South Africa.

In the women's tournament, Australia found a way to silence the Netherlands' Mariska Beijer and pulled out a 58-49 win to wrap up pool play with a 3-1 win at the top of Group A.

Beijer had 26 points in the opening win over Britain and 34 against Canada, but she managed just seven tonight, leaving Inge Huitzing to the Dutch with 14.

Another outstanding performance from Janet McLachlan led Canada to a decisive 65-51 win over Brazil, eliminating the South Americans from the tournament and sending Great Britain through on the hosts' day off.

McLachlan scored 36 points and collected 23 rebounds for Canada, who improve to 2-1, hot on the heels of Australia at the top of Group A.

Brazil drop to 0-3, and can now do no better than matching the record of Britain, who beat them 42-37 yesterday.

Gesche Schuenemann had 23 points and 12 rebounds as Germany recorded a 56-50 win over China in a battle for position at the top of Group B.

All eight quarter-final places have now been claimed in the women's tournament, with Mexico taking the last available slot in Group B with a 50-42 win over France.

Mexico and Britain join Australia, Canada, Holland, Germany, the United States, and China in securing a quarter-final place.
