Germany participated in the first Paralympic Games in 1960 with a team of nine athletes. East German athletes, however, participated in the Paralympic Games for the first and last time in 1984. Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, athletes from all of Germany compete simply as Germany. They have won a total of 1,378 medals (784 for West Germany, 594 for Germany), more than any other country except for the United States and Great Britain. Prior to 2008, they had always been among the top 10 on the medal tables, and were in the top three on six occasions. Among Germany's most successful Paralympians are Reinhild MOLLER (four gold in athletics, and 15 in alpine skiing); swimmer Claudia HENGST (25 medals); Gerd SCHONFELDER (17 medals in alpine skiing) and Frank HOFLE (17 medals in cross-country skiing).
