Gabrielle Giffords leads Democrats in Pledge of Allegiance

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Former Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, grievously wounded in a January 2011 assassination attempt, led Democrats in the Pledge of Allegiance on Thursday as they opened the final day of their political convention.

Giffords walked uneasily onstage, relying on Democratic National Committee Chair—and close friend—Debbie Wasserman Schultz for support, as the crowd chanted "Gabby! Gabby!" Her appearance onstage at Time Warner Cable Arena brought cheering Democrats to their feet for a standing ovation.

As she led the crowd in the pledge in a strong voice, Giffords held her right hand over her heart with her left. She won more cheers when she blew a kiss to the crowd. Cameras showed delegates weeping as they clapped.

Even as the two women disappeared backstage, the crowd began chanting "fired up, ready to go."

Happy she continues to recover and glad they said the pledge.

I don't care what her politics are, she doesn't deserve the hand she was dealt with.

It's not always about Dems vs Reps, liberals vs conservatives or even blue vs red America. Sometimes it's about a kind word and a wise thought for those innocent people who've survived a horrendous event and yes, for the innocent victims who sadly didn't.
A good heart and soul America, these are two things that nobody can take from you unless you willingly give them away.

Republican name calling and Democrat excuses, really? More of the same from both sides. Yawn.

Mrs. Giffords, after going through her ordeal, could well have chosen to not appear or speak in public again, not be around any kind of a crowd, to give in to any fears she had/has from what she has been through. She chose otherwise.

There is NOTHING political in her strenth, her recovery and survival. She is a person to be admired by ALL. She is a survivor.

This story touched me when I read that she had to use her left hand to hold her right hand over her heart.

This is a story about a strong woman, a genuine human being.

Those of you who think/feel this is about politics are missing the 'truth' of this story and the strength of this person--Gabby Giffords.

She is to be commended -- aside from the politics people choose to see in this story.

      Way to go, Gabby!

You have shown the strength of your character and how a person can choose to become a survivor. I applaud you.

Now, if we can just get rid of the politics, the 'parties,' across the board, and see people for who they can be when they so choose.

Those of you who find something negative in this story, usually in the vein of politics, if only you had the strength of this woman.

Those of you who see the positive in this story, you know when you see strength and character and happiness in a person who has chosen to be a survivor.

It is the positive that will move us all forward. It is the negative that will keep us all from being survivors. It's your choice.

I am happy and proud for the choice Mrs. Gabrielle Giffords made. I am happy for her strength. I am happy that I can see 'aside' from the politics in this story and see a person who shows us we can choose to be a survivor.

@Concerned, at least half of the comments on this post are ignorant!

Bless her heart! She has sacrificed a lot for the right of people to bear arms.

I'm a Republican and I cheered for Gabby. I may not agree with her politics but I do admire her as a person, politician, as a woman and most of all as an American.

Well, I'm an independent, and I draw strength from her story.

We are a brain injury survivor family and it is a long hard road for recovery. Mrs. Gifford's recovery is remarkable and courageous and her husband and family are her strength and are to be commended. God Bless you Mr. and Mrs. Gifford.

How unfortunate that people are filled with such hate. Regardless of political party choice what happened to Gabby is horrible. Wonderful that she is doing well.

WE can see from Gabby Giffords that love is stronger than hate. She took a bullet to the brain from hate and can still get us all on our feet seeing the really Gabby, hearing her message, and showing us what loyal friends and love of family, friends, and country is all about.

When I saw all the mean comments last night on this board, I became sure that we have an illness in this country paid for by the Koch brothers types--the ones born wealthy who can't get enough it seems to me---who want to make the world more hateful and less loving. What we have on tv also--survivor mean shows where folks don't share but are cut throat.

In that moment, I don't care what political party she belongs to.
I'm glad that she is recovering from that terrible tragedy, and I am glad that she led the audience in the Pledge, God and all. One thing we should all agree on.

      I'm glad she's getting better.

I'm AMAZED! She ACTUALLY said UNDER GOD! I thought that was taboo in the DNC anymore.

I have all of the respect in the world for Gabby Giffords and her battle to heal after the terrible attempt on her life. Best to you Gabby. As for dweeby SHittz, i can think of nothing good to say about a person who lies as much as she does. She would not even admit to the truth when called out by numerous predominately liberal media host. Get well soon Gabby and maybe you can choose some better friends. GO ROMNEY/RYAN God Bless America, God Bless Israel, And God Bless Gabby Giffords.

By the comments seen here, what Beck,Limbaugh, and Hannity are saying it is very clear to all there is a full onslaught War on Woman. The only reason these people are made Gabby lead us in the pledge is because she is a Woman.

Her recovery was probably one of the best turn-around I think I have ever witnessed. For what that woman has been through, she turned out amazing. God Bless you Mrs. Gifford!
