Second "Hobbit" movie gets new name, July 2014 release for third

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The third film in the upcoming "Hobbit" movie trilogy will be released worldwide in July 2014, the movie studios behind the venture said on Friday, and the second film now has a new name.

The third film -- "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" -- will open in movie theaters on July 18, 2014 - just seven months after the newly titled second film "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" arrives on December 13, 2013. The second film originally carried the "There and Back Again" title.

The first film, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" starring British actor Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, has already been set for a December 14, 2012 opening.

Director Peter Jackson, Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, and MGM announced in July that the 3D-film adaptation of the classic novel by J.R.R. Tolkien would be split into three films rather than the two originally envisaged.

Warner Bros. executives said they believed the third movie would play well in the summer - the most lucrative period for the movie industry and the launch pad for action-packed blockbusters.

"We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of ‘The Hobbit' trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure," Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. said in a statement.

"The Hobbit" is the prequel to Tolkien's epic fantasy "The Lord of the Rings" which Jackson made into three Oscar-winning films about 10 years ago.

Why stop at three movies for one short book, make one film per chapter!

It isn't just one book he's using, but also stories that were told after "The Hobbit"
Jackson is doing that because he wasn't to use as much of Tolkiens' works as possible.

Why is a book that was half the size of any of the Lord of the Rings books getting a full trilogy? In the words of Han Solo, "I got a baad feeling about this."

Let us all hope that Jackson does not do to these movies what Lucas did to Star Wars.

Could they possibly milk this more?
I love The Hobbit and all but stretching this book out to 3 movies is going to turn it into a snorefest unless they take a lot of liberties with the original story.

Anyone that is familiar with PJ and his knowledge of Tolkien's work should feel very comfortable with a Hobbit trilogy. Those individuals completely ignorant to The Hobbit wouldn't know that The Desolation Of Smaug is a LOCATION on Thorin's map and is VERY telling to where Thorin and Company will be at during the 2nd movie (spoiler anyone?). Sit back and watch them eat their words come December.

3 films allows them to tell the whole story without cutting as much out as they would have had to if they did only 2 films. The original trilogy were over 3 hours each and even then 3 films would not have been enough to tell the whole story, it needed probably 6 films.

So I'm happy to see a trilogy.

Their Greed has no bounds...They can do this story in one 3 hour movie...following the Harry Potter rip off of a two part story of which the first of the last movie sucked and was amazingly boring yet the finale was outstanding..fluff then tough!
I will still go but it had better be good and not boring.

Grow up you nay sayers, it's just entertainment. I loved LOTR trilogy and how well PJ was able to film and direct 3 films at the same time and make each seem better than the last. If you can't accept 3 movies now - wait for the remake in 15 years, when your parents are gone and you can move upstairs from the basement.
We always complain how the movie always seems to leave some critical elements of the book out, so perhaps making this into a trilogy will capture more of those important aspects of the book.

Peter Jackson is a corporate stooge and succumbed to the studio's pressure to increase profits by stretching it into 3 movies instead of 2. 2 movies was a stretch to begin with. I get the feeling Jackson is stretching out parts of the book that were glossed over just to bring back characters like Elrond, Galadriel and Legolas (who was never mentioned in the book). I stand by my original decision to boycott these movies and not give Jackson and the studio stooges one dime.

Not only will I be paying to see The Hobbit trilogy, but I'll likely see them more than once! I've re-read Tolkien since I was 13 and even payed my respects while vacationing in the UK during the late 90's. "This will be a night to remember!"

This is just nonesense! the book itself isn't that long. I would have understand if they make 2 movies out of it but 3? that's just too much! obviously they're doing it for the money really. I just hope it would exceed my expectations.

Barclays sees Middle East driving investment bank

DUBAI (Reuters) - The Middle East will be an important growth area in coming years for investment banks, including Barclays , as local wealth funds put their oil dollars to work buying European assets, a senior executive at the British bank said. "If you look globally, the upside is in emerging markets and the Middle East is a key component of that," Makram Azar, global vice-chairman for investment banking at Barclays, told Reuters. "We are committed to the Middle East. I do not see why our strategy would change," Azar said in an interview. ...
