Mission Statement
RPG Site: The only resource for information on the Role Playing Game Genre.
To us this slogan is entirely representative of everything we aim to accomplish. Our intention is to be the only resource any RPG gamer will need for information on their favorite genre. We aim to know the genre inside-out and have only the best, most knowledgeable writing about it.
In spite of this, we understand our audience is just like us - they know RPGs, and they know what they like. We aim to help these gamers decide which RPGs to play and which to eschew and include more in-depth information in our writing than other destinations that are not dedicated to RPGs.
Quite simply, we aim to be the best at what we do. What we do is RPGs.
What is an RPG?
This is a difficult question for us here at RPGSite. What games do we cover? Now more than ever the RPG Genre is diversifying and including games that have elements more at home in other genres like Action or Shooting titles.
We decide what titles we cover on a game-to-game basis, but here are some of the factors we use to decide what we cover:
Our key focus is on games directly derived from the pen-and-paper RPGs of old. Games in this family tree are likely to include elements such as the following:
- A Strong Narrative
- Statistic & Number-based combat skill progression
- Hit Points & Levels
- A plethora of Learnable Skills
- Equipment to manage that effects character performance
- 'Role Playing' via making choices for your character that effect the game outcome.
With that said and done, we do not require an RPG to have all of these elements present. Your average Final Fantasy title features little in the way of choices that effect the game outcome as the series traditionally features a linear, predetermined plot - but the game still has statistic-based combat, skills, equipment, levels and a strong narrative.
Some games we cover may only feature one or two of the connections to their table-top forefathers, while others will be deeply connected and have gameplay rooted in the classic D&D style.
Ultimately we are not restrained by our table-top ancestors. As RPG fans ourselves, we endeavour to cover any titles that we are interested in or that we feel you will be interested in. This means occasionally we will cover titles with few actual RPG elements that we feel will still strongly appeal to RPG fans.
This may well occasionally cover games that feature traditional RPG story elements but feature little traditional RPG gameplay. This will be the exception and not the rule, though.
If there is a title you feel we should be covering but are not, feel free to get in touch with us at webmaster (at) rpgsite (dot) net.
How our Reviews Work
Here at RPGSite we score games out of a grand total of 100 percent. This score is compiled in a way which takes into account various elements of the game in question including the storyline, graphics, sound, music, presentation, gameplay and other areas.
We chose to use the percentage system as it allows for a clear but accurate number. We use no decimal places, but we can still differentiate on more than a ten point scale to allow our readers to see the intricacies and differences between the quality of different games on the market.
It also looks pretty in our site design - check out the arrow that indicates the rating of a game on each game's page.
All of our reviews are entrusted to a single staff member. They play the game in question and then write about it and assign a score to it. Reviews are always looked over by several more staff members, but each review is representative of one person's opinion and so may not entirely reflect the opinion of the full site staff.
In the cases of some larger titles, we will post two seperate reviews. Each review will always be the thoughts of one individual, though - we do not review by comittee.
The score should be reflective of the writing and the writing should be reflective of the score.
But why did Game X Score More/Less than Game Y?
As mentioned above, the score should be reflective of the writing and the writing should be reflective of the score - if you don't understand why games have been given the score they have, read the review text for clarification.
It is also worth remembering that reviews are written by individual members of staff who have differing opinions. If you wish to discuss a review with the staff member who wrote it feel free to contact them to discuss it.
What if a game has more than one review?
If a game has more than one review the score shown in our database and on pages featuring that game is the average of the two scores. Each review can be viewed individually and will display its original score, though.
