IndieGames Podcast #24: The Sidescrolling of Isaac

February 25, 2012 2:00 AM | jeriaska

Four composers of music for independently developed game titles join us for this installment of the IndieGames podcast. Their music can be heard together as part of the one-week Nubuwo Debut Bundle project on Kickstarter, an initiative unrelated to IndieGames.com but organized in part by the host of the show.

Composer Danny Baranowsky is known for his collaboration with Edmund McMillen on the development of roguelike shooter The Binding of Isaac. The upcoming expansion, titled "The Wrath of the Lamb," will feature all-new "parallel universe" music variations for each track.

Chip musician Ash Charles, aka Sabrepulse, wrote the soundtrack to Bit Pilot for iOS, designed by Zach Gage. Earlier this week he contributed a track to the Da Chip vol. II Daft Punk chiptune cover compilation.

Musician Dom Beken is one half of UK hip-hop duo High Frequency Bandwidth, with Alex Paterson. Their music can be heard on Q-Games' PlayStation 3 titles PixelJunk Shooter, PixelJunk Shooter 2 and PixelJunk SideScroller.

Composer Tomas Dvorak (Floex) is responsible for the music heard in Czech studio Amanita Design's point-and-click adventure games Samorost 2 and Machinarium. He is currently planning his approach to the score for Samorost 3.

The program is available to stream and download through Buzzsprout and SoundCloud. Show notes can be found after the break.

IndieGames Podcast #23: Sleigh Ride

Today on the IndieGames Podcast, we are joined by composers of music for independently developed game titles.

Having worked on flOw for PS3, Austin Wintory is currently developing compositions for ThatGameCompany's Journey, due out on the PlayStation Network in 2012. The musician is also collaborating with designer Andy Schatz on Monaco, which won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival in 2010.

Following the release of his albums Twilight & Ghost Stories and Psychic Temple, Chris Schlarb published the soundtrack album to NightSky early this year on Bandcamp. The puzzle game by Nifflas for the PC is being ported to the Nintendo 3DS by Nicalis. The musician has also collaborated with Erik Loyer on the interactive iOS application Strange Rain.

Finally, Shadi Muklashy and Ali Bavarian of Paper Sound are at work on Adhesive Games' future mech combat simulator Hawken, whose gritty trailers take place in a dystopian future setting.

IndieGames.com Podcast #22: Team Meat, Take Two

September 5, 2011 9:00 AM | Michael Rose

indiegames.PNGAnother IndieGames podcast, another chance to have your ears filled with indie goodness. This week marks the first time we've had a developer on for a second visit, as Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes of Team Meat are back to discuss the aftermath of Super Meat Boy.

Edmund also talks about The Binding of Isaac, his upcoming roguelike, and the duo look to what the future holds for the both of them. As you'd expect, there's a fair amount of strong language, so if you're suspectable to becoming offended by the spoken word, you should probably listen to it on mute instead.

You know the drill by now - jump below the cut to listen to the podcast, or you can jump over here and listen instead. You like iTunes? Of course you don't, but it's available on there too (you know, in case you're mental). And finally, there is an RSS feed you can subscribe to, if you like being fed. Go listen!

IndieGames.com Podcast #21: Tom Sennett

July 20, 2011 9:00 AM | Michael Rose

indiegames.PNGTom Sennett is on the IndieGames.com podcast this week! He's the dude behind RunMan: Race Around the World and Deepak Fights Robots, but you already knew that, right? We talk about both games, but also go off on a number of tangents about a ton of other stuff too.

What was his inspiration for Deepak? How many hidden secrets and easter eggs are there to be found in the game? Why is RunMan so colourful? Why did it take 4 years to make it? What is he working on right now? How did he come up with his very particular art style? All of this is revealed and more, along with many questions that you probably wouldn't have thought to ask.

You know the drill by now - jump below the cut to listen to the podcast, or you can jump over here and listen instead. You like iTunes? Of course you don't, but it's available on there too (you know, in case you're mental). And finally, there is an RSS feed you can subscribe to, if you like being fed. Go listen!

IndieGames.com Podcast #20: Project Zomboid

July 9, 2011 5:00 PM | Michael Rose

indiegames.PNGI owe the devs behind zombie survival RPG Project Zomboid a bit of an apology. We recorded this podcast some months ago, but due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, including exploding PCs and busy schedules, only now have I managed to sit down and put it all together.

Fortunately, it's all still great stuff, with the guys discussing what their plans for the future of the game are, what their inspirations for the setting are, and who would eat who first if they were stuck in a real zombie apocalypse. The podcast was recorded just before the alpha of the game was released, so feel free to ignore mentions of the 'upcoming' version.

You know the drill by now - jump below the cut to listen to the podcast, or you can jump over here and listen instead. You like iTunes? Of course you don't, but it's available on there too (you know, in case you're mental). And finally, there is an RSS feed you can subscribe to, if you like being fed. Go listen!

IndieGames.com Podcast #19: Bennett Foddy

April 14, 2011 9:04 PM | Michael Rose

indiegames.PNGBennett Foddy is on the podcast this week, the Oxford professor who creates games that we all HATE in his spare time. QWOP made us laugh and cry as we attempted to run a mere 100 metres, then GIRP did it all over again with hand-holds that were just out of reach.

So what has the master of disaster got planned for us next then? All is discussed, along with public reaction to his games, past potential sponsorships and why they don't make fighting games like they used to.

You know the drill by now - jump below the cut to listen to the podcast, or you can jump over here and listen instead. You like iTunes? Of course you don't, but it's available on there too (you know, in case you're mental). And finally, there is an RSS feed you can subscribe to, if you like being fed. Go listen!

IndieGames.com Podcast #18: James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot of Indie Game: The Movie

April 6, 2011 4:29 PM | Michael Rose

indiegames.PNGJames Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot of Indie Game: The Movie finished filming last month, so we thought it was time to get them both on the podcast and ask many, many questions. The upcoming documentary is set to focus on the lives of indie game developers, going through the emotions of a big release and delving into what inspires them to create the games they want to create.

Our questions range from discussing the content of the movie to the hardware and software used to film it, for all those of you who want to know all the technical details. We also ask about the individual developers featured, and whether the duo plan to do it all over again, but around the world this time.

You know the drill by now - jump below the cut to listen to the podcast, or you can jump over here and listen instead. You like iTunes? Of course you don't, but it's available on there too (you know, in case you're mental). And finally, there is an RSS feed you can subscribe to, if you like being fed. Go listen!

IndieGames.com Podcast #17: Zach Barth on SpaceChem and Infiniminer

March 8, 2011 9:13 PM | Michael Rose

indiegames.PNGWe talked to SpaceChem developer Zach Barth this week on the IndieGames podcast. Have you tried SpaceChem yet? You really should - it's even available on Steam now, don't you know. Here's my review too! Zach discussed extra content coming soon to the game, and talked about whether any of it actually makes any sense.

We also mentioned Infiniminer, or 'Minecraft's inspiration' to many. Why did he stop working on it? Does he regret it? Answers are just a click away! There's also plenty of silliness as per usual, and Zack agrees to give away a few copies of SpaceChem to some lucky IndieGames readers. More on that later in the week!

You know the drill by now - jump below the cut to listen to the podcast, or you can jump over here and listen instead. You like iTunes? Of course you don't, but it's available on there too (you know, in case you're mental). And finally, there is an RSS feed you can subscribe to, if you like being fed. Go listen!
