Giveaway and Release Trailer: Snapshot (Retro Affect)

August 30, 2012 6:00 PM | Cassandra Khaw

Remember Snapshot? Yes? No? Either way, it's time to get reacquainted with the game. Snapshot is Retro Affect's spectacular tale of a lost little robot and his amazing camera. Unlike normal cameras, this guy's little device of choice doesn't just capture images, it's capable of transplanting objects and moving them around. Heck, even rotation is entirely possible here. Cool mechanics not enough for you? There'll be four different environments to explore and a hundred different levels to puzzle and platform your way through. What more can you ask for?

Those interested in picking up the game for Windows on Steam can do so over here. Mac, Linux, PS VIta and PS3 versions will be released over the next few months

Those interested in receiving one of five free Steam codes should take a "snapshot" (Alt + Print Screen will suffice) of the indie game they are playing right now and post a URL of the photo in the comments below. Please state the developer and game title in the comment post, too. We will select random users who follow these steps tomorrow.

Trailer: Residue (The Working Parts)

August 30, 2012 4:00 PM | Cassandra Khaw

The Working Parts' latest game following They Breathe has me rather intrigued. Residue begins with a disgraced oil tycoon named Nikolai Sitvin and his attempts at restoring the Aral Sea. Needless to say, it fails horribly. People die. Nonetheless, that doesn't stop four very different people from returning to the site years later, driven by their own set of motivations. The upcoming platform-adventure game will have you switching between the aforementioned characters even as you attempt to complete the game's thirteen chapters.

Vlambeer's Super Crate Box Now Playable For Free On Steam

August 30, 2012 12:00 PM | Danny Cowan

Vlambeer's hit single-screen action game Super Crate Box is now available on Steam as a free download.

Super Crate Box challenges players to collect as many crates as possible before dying. Each collected crate awards a random weapon, some of which are more useful than others. Problem: an endless stream of enemies wants you dead, and if any creature reaches the bottom of the screen before you kill it, it'll return at the top of the screen, angrier and tougher than before.

Super Crate Box includes a long list of unlockable stages and weapons, and it does a good job of making you want to keep playing until you reach the next score goal. An iOS version is also available, if you want to play on the go.

Mobile Game Pick: Destroy All Color! (Golden Ruby Games)

August 30, 2012 10:00 AM | Danny Cowan

App Store newcomer Golden Ruby Games has released Destroy All Color! HD, a match-three puzzler that uses the camera on your iOS device to generate in-game puzzle pieces.

Destroy All Color! examines the image within your camera's frame and produces similarly colored shapes on the playfield. By pointing the camera at a yellow object, for instance, you can create a yellow block to destroy like-colored pieces. The game includes over 100 levels, along with an Endless mode that's bound to put your shutterbugging skills to the test.

Destroy All Color! is available as a universal app, and is priced at 99 cents.

From Russia With Horror: Fibrillation

August 30, 2012 7:30 AM | Konstantinos Dimopoulos / Gnome

fibrillation.pngDisorientation. Oddness. Darkness. Hallucinations. Voices. Impaired vision. Yes, getting scared doesn't have to involve violence. At least not of the direct kind. A truly empty building can be perfect for horror, let alone a building that doesn't really make sense. A building that defies the laws of both physics and logic. Or an endless maze. Or, well, a brand new indie horror game called Fibrillation by Egor Rezenov.

Created on a shoe-string budget, Fibrillation, a "first person philosophic horror with elements of mysticism" according to its developer, is both unsettling and thought-provoking. And, despite being a gorgeous little game, it also allows you to close your in-game eyes. And be scared while enjoying the short and evocative Dear Esther-esque experience it has to offer. An experience that won't last you more than an hour and has been designed to be played through in one sitting.

Now, though Fibrillation is not a perfect game (the jarring voice-over and a couple of dull areas are a bit of a disappointment) it is definitely worth checking out. At $1.95 it's more than reasonably priced too. Besides, you will also be supporting a young and apparently really talented developer.

Demo: Captain Disaster (Team Disaster)

August 30, 2012 5:00 AM | Konstantinos Dimopoulos / Gnome

captain disaster.pngCaptain Disaster in Death Has a Million Stomping Boots is the first (and very ambitious) point-and-click adventure game by Team Disaster and a lovely retro-flavoured offering starring Captain Disaster and his Disaster Area spaceship. If you have ever played a Space Quest game you'll more or less know what to expect. If not, well, expect tons of weird references, odd puzzles, funny bits of dialogue and a generous serving of sci-fi humour. As an added bonus, you'll also be getting some of the silliest voice over around and certain puzzles involving tea.

Captain Disaster will be a commercial release that should appear sometime in late 2012 or early 2013. You can download its freshly released, seriously surreal and most promising demo here.

If You Don't Have Passion for Your Work, Why Bother?

August 30, 2012 2:00 AM | Staff

hotlinemiami.pngThe name Devolver Digital is slowly becoming a term that numerous indie developers want to be involved with. While the publisher initially began life focused on publishing a barrage of Serious Sam titles, more recently it has expanded its sights to great effect.

The publisher is now working with the likes of Dennaton Games (Jonatan "Cactus" Soderstrom and Dennis Wedin) on Hotline Miami and Vlambeer on Luftrausers, drumming up a serious amount of interest from the press and players alike, and all thanks to the contacts the company made through its work on the Serious Sam Indie Series last year.

"Devolver Digital started partly because our friends at Croteam wanted a partner for Serious Sam 3: BFE, and our team wanted to start a game label that still knew how to make the games industry fun for everyone," says Nigel Lowrie of Devolver in an interview with sister site Gamasutra. "One of the more unique elements in promoting Serious Sam 3: BFE was to tie the series back to its indie roots by working with top independent developers to make the three games in the Serious Sam Indie Series."

Through the initiative, Devolver began working more with the likes of Vlambeer and Mommy's Best Games, eventually also picking up Dennaton Games and Dungeon Hearts studio Cube Roots.

"The reason we are doing this is because these are the folks with the genuinely fresh and unique ideas in gaming," adds Lowrie. "Titles like Hotline Miami and Luftrausers were born out of love -- not some marketing spreadsheet or focus group."

Video: XNA Bullet Engine (Abraham Morales)

August 29, 2012 11:00 PM | Danny Cowan

Vorpal developer Abraham Morales has released a preview video for his in-progress bullet pattern-generation engine, which he hopes to release to the public following the completion of Vorpal 2.

The work he's put into it so far is impressive, and it could end up being a valuable resource for developers of bullet-hell shooters. It's also a nice surprise to hear that Vorpal 2 is in development -- the original game was a lot of fun, and the sequel will hopefully be even better.

Indie Royale Profile: Shattered Horizon

August 29, 2012 9:00 PM | Staff

[Guest reviewer Colin Brown profiles each game in The Getaway Bundle, now available at IndieGames' co-created site: Indie Royale.]

Shattered Horizon is an orbital multiplayer FPS with a lot of big ideas yet a tragically small community. Hopefully their Indie Royale debut can help out with the low population problem because this is a really neat, science focused FPS that does something entirely different from every other multiplayer shooter on the market. It's atypical zero gravity design is bizarre, unwieldy and takes a lot to get used to, but when you get into the groove it sets the stage for some pretty ridiculous firefights.
