These plates are printed on
sturdy, very

Baird and cut from his chapter on "Birds of the Boundary," which appeared in Colonel William H. Emory's classic Report on the United States-Mexician Boundary Survey, Under the Direction of the Secretary of the Interior, etc., published in Washington, 1857-59. Undertaken in response to the Gadsen Purchase, this important expedition reported on the people, topography, and biology of the American Southwest. The boundary, as then surveyed, has remained intact, with only minor alterations, for the last 150 years. (See also William H. Emory ). J. T. Bowen , Philadelphia |
Appointed Assistant Secretary of the National Museum (Smithsonian Institute) in 1850 and then secretary in 1878, Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887) was a major figure in American ornithology and is responsible for greatly expanding the museum's holdings in natural history. At Baird's insistence, the various governmental exploring expeditions, primarily concerned with geographical studies, agreed to include zoological components. Among Baird's many writings is the History of North American Birds (with Thomas Brewer and Robert Ridgway ), published in 1874-75 and long considered a standard reference work. |
