3 Things You Need to Know about Eating Protein

Protein is an essential part of the human diet, and most Americans eat plenty of it.

Adults should eat a minimum of 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight daily — that's about 58 grams for a 160-pound adult, according to recommendations from the Institute of Medicine.

"We're a meat-, poultry-, fish-focused society," said Julie Metos, a dietitian at the University of Utah. "When we think of a meal, it's usually some form of meat, surrounded by starches or veggies on a plate."

At any meal, consuming 2 to 3 ounces of cooked lean meat, poultry or fish, or half of a cup of cooked beans, is what's suggested.

Portion sizes in the U.S. are often bigger than that, Metos said.

Three ounces of protein is a serving about the size of the palm of your hand, she said. "But a hamburger at a fast food place is usually 4 ounces. And if you get a double burger, it's 8 ounces."

While eating more protein than what's recommended is not necessarily bad for you, if the excess protein in a diet is contributing to excess calories, it can contribute to weight gain.

Here are three more things you should know about protein.

A high-protein diet may help with weight loss — but only for a little while.

Although there is some evidence to suggest that high-protein, low-carb diets help people lose weight more quickly than low-fat, high-carb diets, it remains unclear if high-protein diets can work for the long term.

In a 2007 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers looked at 311 overweight and obese women, and divided them into four groups. Each group followed either the Zone diet (which roughly balances protein, carbohydrates and fat intake), the Atkins diet (high protein, low carb), the LEARN diet (low fat), or Ornish diet (low fat) for one year.

At the end of the study, they found that women on the Atkins diet, who ate the most high-protein meals, lost about 10 pounds, while women in the other groups who lost between three and six pounds.

But experts have said that not all the women in the study stuck with their assigned diets.

Metos said that current research suggests focusing weight-loss efforts on reducing the number calories you eat. "The protein, fat and carbohydrate content is not a factor, as long as the calories are reduced."

"Some people report they feel more full with a higher-protein diet, so it could help them indirectly to lower their calorie intake, but over time it is not shown to be better," she said.

Adding more protein to your diet doesn't promote muscle growth.

In a 2004 study, researchers looked at whether adding more protein to an athlete's diet would affect performance and muscle build.

They found that while athletes — especially those involved with sports that require a lot of endurance and muscle power, such as long-distance runners or football players — may benefit from increased protein intake, most athletes in the study get enough protein from their regular diets.

Even body builders need only a little bit of extra protein to support muscle growth, which they can get by eating more food, reports the National Institutes of Health.

"People who are trying to get into shape think they need more protein, so they drink protein shakes," Metos said, "but they probably don't need that at all."

Eating too much protein can be bad for your health.

The health risks of eating too much protein greatly depend on what kind of protein you eat, but some high-protein foods are also rich in saturated fat, which can raise the risk of heart disease.

"It's OK to eat a little extra protein, as long as you keep your calories in check," Metos said. "Protein has calories, so if you eat a little too much, and don't exercise, it can get stored as fat."

In a large study published in the June issue of the British Medical Journal, researchers looked at nearly 44,000 women in Sweden, who were in their 30s and 40s at the study's start, who completed dietary questionnaires. After 15 years, the study group experienced 1,270 cardiac events, such as heart attacks and strokes.

The researchers found that for every 20 fewer grams of carbohydrates that study participants ate daily, and 5 more grams of protein eaten daily, the risk of heart disease increased by 5 percent.

In addition to heart disease, studies suggest that eating high amounts of protein can contribute to high cholesterol levels, gout and may put a strain on the kidneys, especially those who suffer from kidney disease.

I love it how every year or so "things that are bad you list" changes, most likely next year the article will be "why eating more protein is substantially beneficial to you". I don't pay too much attention to this stuff nor do I run my fitness life by it. Same things with certain exercises, what's good for you today it will kill you tomorrow, blah, blah, blah blah!!!!!

The Atkins dieters lost 10 pounds IN A YEAR, and some of the other dieters lost 3 pounds IN A YEAR. "But experts have said that not all the women in the study stuck with their assigned diets." I wonder what gave that way.
      • Jen 14 hrs ago
If they lost only ten pounds in one YEAR, they're certainly not sticking to the diet.

drop all the animal fat = meat, milk eggs, - theres almond milk and all kinds of vegan things to replace with and the weight just drops off- I even eat loads of deep fried french fries and never put on weight. now I notice that all the animal fats are always at the back of the supermarket because they need refrigeration or they go off, then theres cross contamination, bacteria and all kinds of problems with meat making you sick not cooked properly. so many things that i don't have to worry about not eating meat AND tofu makes ur hair grow - another plus. get healthy people, STOP eating all these antibiotic and steroid filled products - all that crap passes right into you.. and cancer cells love it too.

Diabetics need enough protein. Older people need snacks of cheese, nuts, and if can- high-quality meat etc. between meals, to keep their immune systems up, because Protein stops' infection, and heals' tissues. it slows the gut down, so that there is prolonged energy, for Diabetics.
      • deepsouth 9 hrs ago
@ Daughter "because Protein stops' infection, and heals' tissues. " under what medical research are you relying on for that statement ? such a dumb lie I had to post a response. animal protein is not good for anything except making you feel full. in fact its bad for you, and promotes cancer cell growth - thats the only tissues that heal with it, whereas vegetable proteins [nuts, beans and green veges] they destroy cancer cells and inhibit cancer growths. for that ONE reason I dropped all animal food incl milk meat cheese and I never looked back -I'm thin, healthy, never go to the doctor for years now, its fantastic.. its all I can tell ya. if you want the medical research watch a video called 'forks over knives' .

I recently weighed over 300 pounds and had alot of heart arrythermias called a-fib. I had three ablations with limited success for a short period of time. It reverted however to a much more serious type of arrythermia where in fact I had 5 different types of arrythermias going on at one time. Now what does this have to do with this article. I had been talking to some people with the same problem who went on protein diets and also had weight loss surgery. They indicated to me that their problem had either disappeared or lessened by a great amount. I demanded the procedure from my doctors and have lost over 90 pounds and have continued the protein diet since and I no longer take any cardiac medicine and only occasionally have a missed beat now and then. The diet in conjunction with the surgery has worked great. I eat everything I did before only in smaller amounts but bulk the diet with protein shakes and I am maintaining well. I am 60 years old and now run 1 1/2 miles everyday and feel terriffic.

You can also eat poultry and red meat, although try to eat red meat in moderation and start running on the treadmill, make the time, because as a matter of fact this is a matter of life and death. Your life, time for you to step up and take control. Check the nutrition. label on each food you eat, for example if you eat beans you have to figure out how many of the calories come from carbs, that should dictate to you how much you can eat. The fiber and protein calories don't count so much

my doctor had me on the Atkins diet and I got real sick, with protein dumping syndrome, to much protein and my Kidneys got bad for a while, no one should go on any extreme diet and some of us actually do not do well on a lot of protein, he cut mine down and I am much better, big surprise, each person needs to go by what their own body tells them...and no all doctors know how change in diet will affect you till it happens...watch out for protein dumping syndrome is very dangerous...to much protein not a cure all

This is just the latest junk science. My father had a quad bipass in 88. He was told no saturated fats , Put on a diet that limited his chololesterol intake. He ate n othing but vedgies , chicken and fish. Margarine, No dairy, no eggs, no b eef or pork. Then 10 yrs later ,margarine was out butter was in, skim milk was ok, lean beef and pork was ok. Fish was cut to 1x a month due to mercury and pcbs. No carbs . no eggs. Then there was the no meat, soy protien ok, vedgies, Whole grains , 2% milk was ok. eggs were ok, whole wheat bread ok. whole wheat pasta ok peanut butter ok( Natural oilly only. Now 24 years later. They tell him just eat a balanced diet, Limit portions. NO FAST FOOD. NO FRIED FOODS. everything in moderation. In the patients who had heart disease, What other risk factors did they have? Did they gain weight? Not exercise? Smoke still? Drink heavilly? Family history of early death due to Hypercholesterolemia? Too many outside factors. Only way to have a true study is sets of twins, in a controled environment, using one for study and one for control. BIG PROBLEM!! Mengele did this, and B.F. Skinner did this. IT is INHUMANE and LEGALLY and MORALLY WRONG. When asked about daily habits, PEOPLE LIE on questionaires, if they think you will judge them on life style choices.. More Junk Science to follow. When will the researchers be on DR OZ?

If they've found that pregnant women's cravings are their body's call for more of a specific dietary item, why can't they just extend that thought to all people and then we listen to our bodies wants instead of trying to follow a particular diet. After all, we all know about moderation.
    • FirstDude  •  12 hrs ago
We all read these articles about balanced diets and we see folks like Gal Obama tell us how we can build and maintain the ideal everything but one ingredient almost always overlooked is the fact that in our nation these days, the nutrition best suited for our bodies is way out of reality for a majority of folk's budgets. A meal is consumed in what, 15 minutes? Most folks will choose that 30 days of cable tv over those spotty 15 minute time slots. Maybe Nutrisystem can come up with a cable tv/menu plan? If the government really wants to fight obesity, toss the food stamp program and offer fixed type menus and let folks take it or leave it. They already provide meals for kids at schools and the like. Just a thought worth exploring.
