August: Lazy or Crazy?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Thursday, August 02, 2012
My sister emailed me this sweet photo of my nephew Tyler last night with a note about a potential blogging topic. Ty is Erin’s younger son, and he and his brother Evan keep Mom and Dad pretty busy these days. With the school year looming, Erin has declared August “unscheduled”, which means everything from no day camps to a relaxed bedtime. This photo shows the results of Ty and the “play until you... Berry Delicious

It’s blueberry season here!
I’ve been stocking up as they go on sale at the grocery store, and hoping we’ll get a chance to take the kids berry picking one of these weekends. We all, even the babies, like to eat the little purple fruit right out of hand, but they’re also one of my favorite fruits to bake with. Partly because they’re so easy - no need to peel or cut! Just wash and use! - but also because,... READ MORE

Thanks so much to Hallie who shared this story of the car-less mother who totes her six children around by way of bicycle. How fun!
Lately I’ve been thinking about adventures with my kids, what kinds of things I’m willing to do on my own with them versus waiting for my husband. Summertime often prompts these ruminations. I want to go off and have fun, to take them places and try new things. But…I... READ MORE
A Worthwhile Summer
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Thursday, June 21, 2012
Today, my sister Erin called me to talk about a column in the Chicago Tribune by Mary Schmich. In it, Schmich challenges herself—and the rest of us—the have a “worthwhile” summer. Scmich relates how in previous summers she’ s “challenged” herself to different goals. Last year’s was to take a single index card for each day and document something special or “summery” that was done on that day.
The column... READ MORE
Summer Fun

I have such fond memories of my childhood summers.
Long bike rides, hours spent reading in the hammock, water balloon fights with the neighbor kids… it was all wonderful. (You see how I’ve conveniently blocked out memories of the chores, even though there were plenty of those.) So much freedom, so many fun things to do, such good weather. Summer as a child was the best.
Summer as an adult is different.... READ MORE
Greens for Dinner
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Food on Thursday, June 07, 2012
I used to think I didn’t like salad, but it turns out I do. Mainly I prefer cooked vegetables to raw ones, but I’ve found that for me, the key to making a pile of greens palatable is to dump a lot of stuff on top of it. And the more food groups the toppings come from, the better.
This is kind of a lot of work for lunch on a random weekday but for summertime dinners, it’s generally a hit with my family.... READ MORE
Summer Won't Kill My Productivity—and Other Promises I'm Making to Myself

This is the last week of school for my teenage son Adam, who will enter his senior year of high school in the Fall. As I woke him this morning, I mentally thought to myself “two more days”.
Two more days of struggling to wake a teen who (in his mom’s opinion) never gets enough sleep.
Two more days of packing him off and then having the bulk of the day home alone while he attends school, music practice... READ MORE
The Outdoors Problem

Ah, spring, when a young man’s thoughts turn to love, and a mother’s - at least this mother’s - turn to sending the kids outside to play already, because we’ve been cooped up in this house all winter and it is making me CRAZY.
Ahem.
Jen Fulwiler’s recent piece about the necessary evil of the McMansion got me thinking about the idyllic days of my childhood. No, seriously - allow me a moment to reminisce,... READ MORE
A Summer Treat When Summer's Over
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Food on Tuesday, October 11, 2011
We’re enjoying a short flashback here (high of 78 today!) but by the calendar, summer is over.
Every year I’m saddened to realize that, yet again, I didn’t get a chance to make s’mores. (We have a gas grill, so it’s harder than when I was a kid and the embers in our charcoal grill pretty much commanded us to roast marshmallows over them.)
S’mores are delicious. Their season is short. I should take... READ MORE
As Corny As ...
Posted by DariaSockey in Food on Wednesday, July 20, 2011
As corny as ... Kansas in August? How about as Pennsylvania in July?
Year ago, when I was a child, we had to wait until August for decent corn on the cob, since that was when local corn came ripe in my home state.
But over the years, earlier ripening varieties have been developed. In addition, newer types of corn holds their sugar content longer than formerly, so even the out of state stuff we’ve... READ MORE
