Biking Time
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Wednesday, July 11, 2012
My daughter, my long-legged, almost six-year-old daughter, rides a bike that she’s long outgrown. Furthermore, though she’s plenty old and coordinated enough to ride without them, she still has training wheels on her bike. She can’t ride this particular bike without them because it’s too small. Plus, we haven’t taken the time to teach her.
I learned to ride a bike a few months before my fifth birthday.... READ MORE
An Addiction As Bad As Drugs

Catholic Exchange has an important piece on the scourge of porn and its devastating effects on young people.
Author Matt Fradd describes the particular harm done to young minds by explicit images.
Lest we despair, he also offers three tips for prevention:
Teach your kids the goodness of their sexuality.
Be a parent rather than a “buddy.”
Use not only filters, but accountability software (he recommends... READ MORE
A Crazy Cure

Hiccup-curing lollipops?
Seems strange, but 13-year-old Connecticut resident Mallory Kievman has invented them. With the help of a team of MBA students, she’s hoping to get them on the market this year.
The secret ingredient is apparently apple cider vinegar, which sounds like an unhappy flavor for a lollipop. But Mallory - who’s already perfected the formula for the “Hiccupops” - says she’s “tweaking... READ MORE

You might have caught this on Facebook, but if not, it’s too good to miss. Check out this two-year-old’s jive! Priceless.
Not Laughing

The above video catches kids in a Washington State high school revealing their stunning ignorance of the most basic civics facts.
Its makers edited it heavily for laughs, so it is not, nor does it intend to be, a fair representation of what da yoots of America have in their heads.
Personally deflated by the defeat of marriage in Maryland yesterday, though, instead of laughing I’ve been thinking... READ MORE
Pillow Up!
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Homemaking on Thursday, December 29, 2011
I had a bright idea this Christmas: kid-sized easy chairs for my little ones to relax in. They’d love it!
Then I saw the prices on those things. Yowza! They were not in the budget this Christmas.
The Internet came to the rescue when my friend Emily posted about homemade pillow mattresses in early December. I don’t sew, but my sister does, and she generously agreed to help me.
I picked up the supplies... READ MORE
Cheese Panels & Other Heresies

Simcha Fisher has another let’s-laugh-at-ourselves classic up.
Her specific problems are a little different than mine.
Where she frets about her youngest kids’ formation, I periodically have to admit to my eldest, “Yes, I’m sorry, you were the guinea pig, and the younger kids have different rules based on what you’ve taught us.”
But we both have kids who mess up the lyrics to hymns, not always deliberately.
She once caught the little Fishers singing “Make me a panel of your cheese.”
I once giggled my way through Mass when I realized my little boy was belting his heart out to a Psalm not found in any Bible:
“The Lord is kinda merciful.”
Surely you must have contributions to a Not-Deliberately-Heretical Childhood Hymnal? Share!
Buried by Toys

Lately, I’ve been pondering the Toy Problem.
I try to begin by rolling my eyes at myself. We’re so fortunate that our problem is an excess of stuff, when we could be having to worry about feeding or clothing or housing our family. The Too Many Toys problem is not a Problem in the real sense.
But still, we have MANY toys. The playroom is full enough that the kids rarely play in there. Most of our once... READ MORE
It's the Simple Things
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Wednesday, September 14, 2011
My babies are mesmerized by it. My big kids love to drag it around. It’s fun and it’s pretty, and just when we parents might be starting to get tired of it, it’s time to throw it away.
This miracle toy? A simple helium balloon.
We discovered the appeal of a balloon when we got one as a treat for Camilla during Blaise’s babyhood. He was a few months old and he couldn’t take his eyes off it. For weeks,... READ MORE
Happy Mothers

“Motherhood is not my highest calling,” says blogger Elizabeth Esther.
That provocative headline got my attention, and so did the premise that misplaced idealism regarding motherhood is ruining it for everybody:
This incredible weight of expectation places an almost impossible burden on mothers and non-mothers alike.
When we artificially inflate the importance of motherhood, then average, everyday,... READ MORE
