Loved and Not-Named

I recently started this conversation on Twitter and it occurred to me that it would be fun to have here too, since people seem eternally interested in discussing baby names. (My apologies if you follow on Twitter and this is repeat content for you.)
We all get to tell the stories of the names we have used for our children, but here’s a far bigger topic: names we haven’t gotten to use.

Floating Celebration

You know those once-in-a-lifetime experiences, when you get to do something you’ve always dreamed of doing and you know you’ll remember it for a long time?
Getting married was like that for me, and the births of my children, and bringing my twins home from the NICU. That’s first-tier stuff. But the experience I had on Wednesday falls firmly in the second tier of things that will stick as incredible... READ MORE
A Different Chaos Theory

Have you ever seen the hilarious post at Conversion Diary with the formula for parents to calculate their “sleep index” - how much sleep it feels like they’ve gotten in a night?
See it here. It takes into account all sorts of factors, and comes up with a surprisingly accurate number. After a particularly bad night I like to plug in all my own variables, and I’m always like, “Huh. Yup, feels about... READ MORE
Family Faces

At a recent family wedding, my husband’s aunt came up to me at said, “I was watching all of you from across the room and thinking, ‘I wonder if it bothers Arwen that she has four children and none of them looks anything like her?’”
I was sort of… startled. I must have looked at her strangely, because she continued, “You know. They just all look so much like Bryan did when he was a little boy!”
And... READ MORE

Thanks so much to Hallie who shared this story of the car-less mother who totes her six children around by way of bicycle. How fun!
Lately I’ve been thinking about adventures with my kids, what kinds of things I’m willing to do on my own with them versus waiting for my husband. Summertime often prompts these ruminations. I want to go off and have fun, to take them places and try new things. But…I... READ MORE
What Do You Remember from High School?

Any other high school science geeks out there?
I enjoyed a walk down memory lane with this “science literacy” quiz at the Christian Science Monitor: quiz here. I don’t really think the results indicate familiarity with basic science concepts - most of the questions concern trivia - and you can definitely get an edge by knowing ancient Greek culture and language, but I had fun answering the questions anyway. Maybe you will too!

Our identical twins look very much alike.
They can’t fool their sister, though. Even when my husband and I have to take a second look to make sure we have the right twin, Camilla never hesitates. I’m not sure how she knows, but she identifies her baby brothers correctly every time.
I’ve noticed this talent of hers for a while, but I was still impressed last weekend. We picked up our copy of the new... READ MORE
Summer Fun

I have such fond memories of my childhood summers.
Long bike rides, hours spent reading in the hammock, water balloon fights with the neighbor kids… it was all wonderful. (You see how I’ve conveniently blocked out memories of the chores, even though there were plenty of those.) So much freedom, so many fun things to do, such good weather. Summer as a child was the best.
Summer as an adult is different.... READ MORE

Are you on Pinterest? Isn’t it fun?!
Clicking around yesterday I discovered this spot that is chock full of ideas for having summertime fun. Right off the bat I noticed the DIY water structure which would be a nice project for big brothers to help younger siblings (ahem).
For the first time in ages, we bought a plastic blue kiddie pool for the backyard and our little ones loved it. What a great way... READ MORE
Children's Book Book Club

I love the idea of online book clubs, but in practice they’re hard. Typing up my thoughts about an entire novel takes too much time.
Still, talking about books is fun, and last week as I listened to my sister reading aloud to my children, I realized: children’s books are full of insights, but short enough that you can discuss them in a single post and comments.
An idea was born: how about Children’s... READ MORE
