Yesterday’s senseless act of domestic terrorism at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin has the nation reeling. With seven dead, including the gunman, and three still critically wounded, many of us are left trying to fathom the horror of someone entering our place of worship and opening fire. As we pray for the Sikh faithful who grieve their loved ones, we follow the lead of Milwaukee Archbishop... READ MORE
St. Bridget, Pray for Us!

Today, we celebrate the life of St. Bridget of Sweden. This mother of eight, whose own children included both a canonized saint (St. Catherine of Sweden) and others who rejected the church, went on to found a religious order. She is best known for her prayers, written as a result of mystical revelations. In October of 2010, Pope Benedict XVI spoke of St. Bridget, calling on her intercession to help unite all Christians.... READ MORE
When Plans Go out the Window
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Tuesday, July 17, 2012
Today was supposed to go so differently.
Today was planned to be the day I got my act together so that I could depart tomorrow on our planned family vacation with a clear conscience. In my head, I had 72 hours of “to do” items crammed into a twenty-four hour day. I would be efficient, deliberate, and definitely cheerful.
Somewhere shortly after undertaking the first “to do” item, things started to... READ MORE
Doctrine on Screen

The US Bishops have long had a version of the Catechism on their website, and I never used it.
It was difficult to search and navigate, so I’d just reach for my paper version instead. It was easy to flip to the (excellent) index and find the information I wanted, and I’d often enjoy browsing the topics at random as well.
But my paper copy of the Catechism is going to languish on the shelf now, because... READ MORE
Just Enough

This little food-for-thought post over at Bearing Blog has had me pondering for a few days now. “The decline of grace” discusses the idea that God giving us the grace we need to handle our lives’ challenges means that when our we pass from a more trying state of life into an easier one, the grace we receive also diminishes. We’re given exactly as much as we need, is the idea. No more.

Jennifer Fulwiler, who recently witnessed a horrific accident, writes at her NC Register blog about seeing a Catholic counselor to help her process her traumatic experience. She had doubts - would therapy be “misused as a replacement for prayer and trust in God”? - but explains in her piece how she overcame those doubts, and how seeing a counselor is helping her heal.
As someone who has greatly benefitted... READ MORE

“Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished from their speech.”
The prophet Jeremiah might as well have been writing this to a 21st century audience! Does our culture even know what the word “faithfulness” means anymore? Hollywood certainly does not. Celebrities marry and divorce like the sacrament is going out of style. “For better or for worse?” “Til death do... READ MORE
